Acute lung injury (ALI) is one of major causes of morbidity and mortality in intensive care. In pathophysiological events of ALI, endothelial surface layer (ESL) injury can result in capillary leakage as the initial event. The "Fusu agent", a traditional Chinese medicine, can inhibit inflammatory factors, attenuate lung capillary leak as seen in our previous study.

Background: Microvascular complications in type 2 diabetes (T2DM), including diabatic retinopathy (DR), diabetic kidney disease (DKD), diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) are the leading causes of visual loss, end-stage renal disease or amputation, while the current therapies are still unsatisfactory. Chinese medicine (CM) has been widely used for treating diabetic mellitus. However, most of the previous studies focused on the single complication.

Purpose: Hepatocellular carcinoma is one of the most predominant malignancies with high fatality rate and its incidence is rising at an alarming rate because of its resistance to radio- and chemotherapy. Indirubin is the major active anti-tumor ingredient of a traditional Chinese herbal medicine. The present study aimed to analyze the effects of indirubin on cell proliferation, migration, invasion, and angiogenesis of tumor-derived endothelial cells (Td-EC).

Neuroimaging studies have demonstrated that the brain is altered both structurally and functionally in patients with primary insomnia (PI). However, most previous hypothesis-driven studies of PI might bias observations. Here, we use global functional connectivity density (gFCD), a hypothesis-free approach, to investigate the brain functional alteration in patients with PI.

Objective: To investigate the mRNA and protein expressions of outer dense fiber 2 (ODF2) in the sperm of the asthenospermia patient and their differences from those in normal healthy men.

Methods: According to the WHO criteria, we collected semen samples from 45 asthenozoospermia patients and 15 normal healthy volunteers. Using computer-assisted sperm analysis (CASA), we divided the semen samples from the asthenospermia patients into a mild, a moderate and a severe group, and determined the mRNA and protein expressions of ODF2 in different groups by RT-PCR and Western blot.

Objective: To investigate the effects and the underlying mechanisms of ShenFu Injection on paclitaxel-induced peripheral neuropathy.

Methods: Twenty-eight adult male Wister rats were randomized into 4 groups (=7) : control group, paclitaxel group, paclitaxel combined with low or high dose of ShenFu Injection groups. Rats were intraperitoneally injected with paclitaxel 8 mg/kg every 4 d for a total of 4 doses except control group.

Objective: To make a real-world study on the efficacy and safety of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) combined with sildenafil in the treatment of erectile dysfunction (ED) that failed to respond to TCM medication.

Methods: This study included 1 038 ED patients with the International Index of Erectile Function-5 (IIEF-5) scores ≤21 and improvement <30% after 4 weeks of TCM medication, differentially diagnosed with kidney-yang or kidney-yin deficiency syndrome. We administered TCM combined with sildenafil (Viagra, Pfizer Pharmaceutical Co.

Objective: To observe the synergistic effect of Qilan Capsules in the treatment of the patient with Qi-deficiency blood-stasis type of prostate cancer receiving androgen-deprivation therapy after castration.

Methods: This randomized controlled double-blind study included 246 cases of Qi-deficiency blood-stasis type of prostate cancer after castration, which were randomly divided into an experiment and a control group of equal number to be treated with Qilan Capsules + androgen-deprivation and placebo + androgen-deprivation, respectively. After 6 months of treatment, we compared the International Prostate Symptoms Scores (IPSS), TCM Symptoms Scores (TCMSS), maximal urine flow rate (Qmax), and the level of serum prostate-specific antigen (PSA) between the two groups of patients.

Oligoasthenozoospermia, teratozoospermia or low sperm motility is the main cause of male infertility. Low sperm motility can be induced by abnormalities of the sperm tail structure and sperm function. The outer dense fiber protein 2 (ODF2) is a protein fiber maintaining cytoskeleton, as a major component of the mammalian sperm tail and centrosome, and its abnormality is closely related to asthenospermia.

Aims: A systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted to evaluate the clinical efficacy and safety of sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D) and moderate renal function impairment.

Methods: Embase, Medline, and Cochrane Central were searched, and randomized controlled trials comparing SGLT2 inhibitors to placebos and other drugs for T2D were collected.

Results: Seven RCTs with a total of 3307 participants were included, and the overall bias was low.

The kinetics of serum hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) during the natural history of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection has been studied, but the factors affecting them remain unclear. We aimed to investigate the factors affecting HBsAg titres, using data from multicentre, large-sized clinical trials in China. The baseline data of 1795 patients in 3 multicentre trials were studied, and the patients were classified into 3 groups: hepatitis B early antigen (HBeAg)-positive chronic HBV infection (n = 588), HBeAg-positive chronic hepatitis B (n = 596), and HBeAg-negative chronic hepatitis B (n = 611).

Due to economic development and lifestyle changes, the incidence of non‑alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has gradually increased in recent years. However, the pathogenesis of NAFLD is not yet fully understood. To identify candidate genes that contribute to the development and progression of NAFLD, two microarray datasets were downloaded from the Gene Expression Omnibus database.

Background: We previously reported a novel tumor-associated antigen with a molecular weight of approximately 48 kDa that was a fragment derived from human DNA-topoisomerase I. The aim of this study is to further investigate the clinical significance of the autoantibody in patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).

Methods: We determined serum levels of the autoantibody in 127 NSCLC patients, 127 age-, sex-, and smoking history-matched healthy control subjects, and 38 patients with pulmonary benign tumors by using a specific enzyme linked immunosorbent assay for the autoantibody.

Objective: To search for potential therapeutic targets for epididymal obstructive azoospermia (EOA) secondary to epididymal infection by observing the pathologic features and analyzing the possible pathophysiologic mechanisms of the disease.

Methods: Eleven 28-53 years old infertile men with the history of epididymal infection were enrolled in this study, all diagnosed with azoospermia by routine semen examination and centrifugation. EOA was confirmed by further examinations of reproductive hormones and seminal plasma biochemical markers and scrotal ultrasonography, followed by surgical exploration and observation of the pathological characteristics of the epididymis.

Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to investigate the underlying mechanisms of acupuncture therapy attracts an increasing attention nowadays. In the present article, the authors make a brief analysis on the progresses of researches about the intra-brain responses of acupuncture stimulation following collecting original research papers with key words of "acupuncture","fMRI" and "magnetic resonance imaging" in PubMed and CNKI databases from January 2003 to December 2014. As a result, a total of 253 original research articles were collected.

To explore the mechanism of psoriasis vulgaris (PV), serum protein expression profiles between PV patients with blood-heat syndrome and healthy volunteers were detected by isobaric tags for relative and absolute quantitation (iTRAQ). First, sera from 15 PV patients with blood-heat syndrome and 10 healthy volunteers were collected; then, serum proteins were separated and hydrolyzed by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) and a specific iTRAQ marker enzyme respectively after further purification and protein abundance treatment. Compared with the control group, differentially expressed proteins in PV patients with blood-heat syndrome were identified and analyzed by tandem mass spectrometry.
