Effective ways to identify and predict men who have sex with men (MSM) at substantial risk for HIV is a global priority. HIV risk assessment tools can improve individual risk awareness and subsequent health-seeking actions. We sought to identify and characterize the performance of HIV infection risk prediction models in MSM through systematic review and meta-analysis.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the most general malignant tumors. Ferroptosis, a type of necrotic cell death that is oxidative and iron-dependent, has a strong correlation with the development of tumors and the progression of cancer. The present study was designed to identify potential diagnostic Ferroptosis-related genes (FRGs) using machine learning.

Here, we explored the potential roles of gut microbiota in the immunity regulation mechanisms of PPD using a cyclophosphamide (CTX)-induced immunosuppression mouse model. Our results showed that a medium dose of PPD (PPD-M, 50 mg/kg) effectively ameliorated the immunosuppression induced by CTX treatment by promoting bone marrow hematopoiesis, increasing the number of splenic T lymphocytes and regulating the secretion of serum immunoglobulins and cytokines.

Bilateral renal clear cell carcinoma (BRCC) is a rare type of renal cell carcinoma (RCC) that accounts for only 1-5% of RCC cases and has a poor clinical prognosis. The origin, tumor microenvironment, cellular molecular features, and intra-tumoral heterogeneity of BRCC are still unclear. We downloaded BRCC single-cell transcriptome sequencing data from the gene expression omnibus database biochip GSE171306, containing 3,575 cells from left-sided clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) and 3,568 cells from right-sided ccRCC, and used a series of R packages for data quality control (QC) and subsequent analysis of BRCC single-cell transcriptome data, including the use of the R packages Seurat and scCancer for cell QC, identification of major cell types, and cell annotation; R package scran for calculation of cell cycle scores; R package infercnv for malignancy scoring of tumor cells; R package ReactomeGSA for functional enrichment analysis; R package Monocle 2 for the analysis of cell differentiation trajectories; and R package CellphoneDB for the analysis of intercellular interactions.

Our study aimed to observe the correlation between epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) and programmed cell death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) expression and evaluate prognostic potential of their co-expression in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) patients. EGFR and PD-L1 expression were evaluated by immunohistochemical analysis. We revealed that there was a positive correlation between EGFR and PD-L1 expression in ESCC ( = 0.

Cannabidiol (CBD) is a nonpsychoactive cannabinoid compound. It has been shown that CBD can inhibit the proliferation of ovarian cancer cells, but the underlying specific mechanism is unclear. We previously presented the first evidence for the expression of leukocyte-associated immunoglobulin-like receptor 1 (LAIR-1), a member of the immunosuppressive receptor family, in ovarian cancer cells.

Background: The incidence of postoperative pancreatic fistula (POPF) after pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD) is high. We sought to develop a POPF prediction model based on a decision tree (DT) and random forest (RF) algorithm after PD and to explore its clinical value.
Methods: The case data of 257 patients who underwent PD in a tertiary general hospital from 2013 to 2021 were retrospectively collected in China.

Background: Previous studies have found qualitative structural and functional brain changes in major depressive disorder (MDD) patients. However, most studies ignored the complementarity of multisequence MRI neuroimaging features and cannot determine accurate biomarkers.
Purpose: To evaluate machine-learning models combined with multisequence MRI neuroimaging features to diagnose patients with MDD.

A simple but novel ophthalmic solution based on two approved drugs was developed to reposition existing drugs to treat new diseases. This nanoformulation was developed using the phytochemical drug glycyrrhizin as an amphiphilic nanocarrier to micellarly solubilize empagliflozin (EMP), an oral drug that is widely used to control high blood glucose but has poor water solubility. This novel nanoformulation, which we designated the EMP@glycymicelle ophthalmic solution, was obtained using a simple preparation process.

We have found that the expression of ring finger and WD repeat domain 3 (RFWD3) is significantly higher in unpaired and paired hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) tissues than in normal tissues. Moreover, this expression has a significant correlation with the infiltration level of 14 immune cell types and when the detected RFWD3 expression levels were grouped as high and low, a prominent difference was revealed for overall survival, disease-specific survival, and progression-free interval. Through statistical analysis (univariate Cox), we were also able to identify RFWD3 as an independent prognostic element for HCC, with RFWD3 having an ability to accurately predict HCC prognosis (area under the curve of 0.

Background: Successful treatment of infectious bone defect remains a major challenge in the orthopaedic field. At present, the conventional treatment for infectious bone defects is surgical debridement and long-term systemic antibiotic use. It is necessary to develop a new strategy to achieve effective bone regeneration and local anti-infection for infectious bone defects.

Polypyrimidine tract‑binding protein 1 (PTBP1) plays an important role in tumor immunity, cell proliferation, apoptosis, and autophagy by regulating RNA metabolism. However, the specific function and mechanism of PTBP1 in ferroptosis remain unclear. In the present study, it was investigated whether PTBP1 regulates ferroptosis and the exact mechanism.

Background: Virtual and augmented reality (VAR) represents a combination of current state-of-the-art computer and imaging technologies and has the potential to be a revolutionary technology in many surgical fields. An increasing number of investigators have developed and applied VAR in hip-related surgery with the aim of using this technology to reduce hip surgery-related complications, improve surgical success rates, and reduce surgical risks. These technologies are beginning to be widely used in hip-related preoperative operation simulation and training, intraoperative navigation tools in the operating room, and postoperative rehabilitation.

Emerging evidence shows that long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) play a vital role in the tumorigenesis and development of cancer, implying that some lncRNAs could be potential therapeutic targets. In this study, we employed Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) and The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) databases to construct a ceRNA network by bioinformatic analysis, and the Down syndrome critical region 8 (lncRNA_DSCR8)/miR-22-3p/actin-related protein 2/3 complex subunit 5 (ARPC5) axis was identified as a potential target in liver cancer (LC). Next, we found that DSCR8 is highly expressed in LC cell lines Hep3B and Huh7.

The geriatric nutritional risk index (GNRI) has been shown to be associated with the prognosis of cancer patients except for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients after transarterial chemoembolization (TACE). Our aim is to examine the association between the GNRI and long-term prognosis in patients with HCC who underwent TACE. Patients with HCC who underwent TACE were enrolled.
