Previous studies have demonstrated that thyroid hormone plays an important role in normal bone development, bone metabolism, and establishment of peak bone mass. However, the correlation of thyroid status with bone mineral content (BMC), bone mineral density (BMD), and osteoporotic vertebral fracture (OVF) is rarely discussed. The current study probes into the potential association between thyroid status and spinal BMC, BMD, and OVF from a novel perspective of thyroid function (TF) and sensitivity to thyroid hormone based on the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey database.

Efficacy and safety of anlotinib combined with S‑1 as a third‑ or later‑line treatment for advanced non‑small cell lung cancer in China: A systematic review and meta‑analysis.

Oncol Lett

December 2024

Department of Oncology, National Health Commission Key Laboratory of Nuclear Technology Medical Transformation, Mianyang Central Hospital, Mianyang, Sichuan 621000, P.R. China.

Anlotinib is presently used as a third-line treatment for non-small cell lung cancer. However, it is not yet reported whether combining anlotinib with S-1 as a third- or later-line treatment offers superior outcomes compared with anlotinib alone. The present meta-analysis aimed to address this question by systematically searching the PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, CMB and China National Knowledge Infrastructure databases for eligible studies published from the establishment of the database to January 10, 2024.

Autoimmune diseases (ADs) are a collection of immunological disorders in which the immune system responds to self-antigens by producing autoantibodies or self-sensitized cells. Current treatments are unable to cure ADs, and achieving long-term drug-free remission remains a challenging task. Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) stands out from other therapies by specifically targeting ADs that target various cell subpopulations, demonstrating notable therapeutic benefits and resulting in sustained drug-free remission.

Brain networks in newborns and infants with and without sensorineural hearing loss: A functional near-infrared spectroscopy study.

World J Psychiatry

October 2024

Key Laboratory for Artificial Intelligence and Cognitive Neuroscience of Language, Xi'an International Studies University, Xi'an 710128, Shaanxi Province, China.

Background: Understanding the impact of early sensory deficits on brain development is essential for understanding developmental processes and developing potential interventions. While previous studies have looked into the impact of prenatal experiences on language development, there is a lack of research on how these experiences affect early language and brain function development in individuals with sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL).

Aim: To investigate SNHL effects on early brain development and connectivity in 4-month-olds healthy newborns and controls.

Background And Purpose: Differentiating high-grade gliomas (HGGs) from solitary brain metastases (SBMs) using conventional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) remains challenging due to their similar imaging features. This study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic performance of advanced diffusion models, such as neurite orientation dispersion and density imaging (NODDI) and mean apparent propagator magnetic resonance imaging (MAP-MRI), incomparison to traditional techniques like diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI), diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), and diffusion kurtosis imaging (DKI) for distinguishing HGGs from SBMs.

Methods: In total, 17 patients with HGGs and 26 patients with SBMs were prospectively recruited based on the established inclusion and exclusion criteria.

Medical Imaging Key Laboratory of Sichuan Province, Science and Technology Innovation Center, Interventional Medical Center, Department of Radiology, Affiliated Hospital of North Sichuan Medical College, Nanchong, Sichuan, 637000, People's Republic of China.

Objective: To develop a model for predicting the overall survival (OS) of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients after transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) on the basis of multisequence MRI radiomic features and clinical variables.

Methods: The DCE-MRI and clinical data of 116 HCC patients treated with TACE for the first time were retrospectively analyzed. The included patients were randomly divided into training and validation cohorts at a ratio of 7:3.

Article Synopsis
  • The study addresses the lack of proven safe and effective treatments for nocturnal leg cramps (NLCs) and aims to evaluate the efficacy of vitamin K2 compared to a placebo in managing these cramps.
  • Conducted in China from September 2022 to December 2023, the trial involved 199 community-dwelling participants aged 65 and older who experienced NLCs, with a randomized allocation of 103 receiving vitamin K2 and 96 receiving a placebo for 8 weeks.
  • Key outcomes measured included the frequency of NLC episodes, duration of cramps, and severity, with results aimed at determining whether vitamin K2 can effectively reduce these symptoms compared to the placebo.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigated hepatic inflammation in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and aimed to create a predictive model for grading this inflammation.
  • A total of 1,706 HCC patients were analyzed, using logistic regression to identify key variables that were incorporated into nomograms for internal and external validation.
  • The developed nomogram effectively distinguished between low (G1) and high (G4) inflammation grades but showed limited accuracy for moderate grades (G2 and G3), suggesting it could aid in HCC management.

This study aimed to assess the effectiveness and safety of 5-Fluorouracil (5-Fu) combined with conventional transarterial chemoembolization (cTACE) compared to 5-Fu combined with drug-eluting bead transarterial chemoembolization (DEB-TACE) using CalliSpheres for the treatment of unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) using propensity score weighting methods. This retrospective analysis included 131 patients with HCC treated with 5-Fu combined with cTACE (5-Fu-cTACE group, n = 65) or DEB-TACE (5-Fu-DEB-TACE group, n = 66) at the Affiliated Hospital of North Sichuan Medical College from January 2019 to December 2022. Based on the baseline data and laboratory indicators, propensity score weighting was used to reduce confounding bias.

Kaempferol enhances intestinal repair and inhibits the hyperproliferation of aging intestinal stem cells in .

Front Cell Dev Biol

October 2024

Center of Gerontology and Geriatrics and Laboratory of Stem Cell and Anti-Aging Research, National Clinical Research Center for Geriatrics and State Key Laboratory of Respiratory Health and Multimorbidity, West China Hospital, Sichuan University, Chengdu, Sichuan, China.

Introduction: Intestinal stem cells (ISCs) are crucial for tissue repair and homeostasis because of their ability to self-renew and differentiate. However, their functionality declines significantly with age, resulting in reduced tissue regeneration and a higher risk of age-related diseases. Addressing this decline in ISC performance during aging presents a substantial challenge.

Background: Recent studies have yielded conflicting results regarding the relationship between smoking history and the effectiveness of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) for advanced lung cancer. While some studies have suggested that smoking may enhance the response to immunotherapy in patients with lung cancer, other findings indicate the contrary. Therefore, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to thoroughly examine this association.
