The present is a retrospective study examining the use of automated breast volume scanner (ABVS) for guiding breast conservation surgery in ductal carcinoma (DCIS). A total of 142 patients with pathologically confirmed DCIS were initially included in the study. The patients underwent preoperative examination by conventional ultrasound and by ABVS.

Increasing evidence has indicated that aberrant expression of miRNAs has been shown to be strongly implicated in the initiation and progression of glioblastoma. Here, we identified a novel tumor suppressive miRNA, miR-564, and investigated its role and therapeutic effect for glioblastoma. We showed that miR-564 was down-regulated in human glioblastoma tissues and cell lines.

Hearing loss is a common sensory disorder mainly caused by the loss of hair cells (HCs). Noise, aging, and ototoxic drugs can all induce apoptosis in HCs. Apoptosis repressor with caspase recruitment domain(ARC) is a key factor in apoptosis that inhibits both intrinsic and extrinsic apoptosis pathways; however, there have been no reports on the role of ARC in HC loss in the inner ear.

Purpose: MicroRNA (miRNA), functions as gene regulators, plays crucial roles in pathogenesis of epilepsy. We hypothesized that single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in miRNA may be associated with childhood epilepsy.
Method: We first genotyped the selected four SNPs (miR-146a rs57095329, miR-149 rs2292832, miR-196a2 rs11614913, and miR-499 rs3746444) in 267 paired childhood epilepsy patients and controls using the TaqMan assay, and evaluated the associations of the four SNPs with the risk of epilepsy.

Fluoropyrimidine-based regimens are the most common treatments in advanced gastric cancer. We used a Bayesian network meta-analysis to identify the optimal fluoropyrimidine-based chemotherapy by comparing their relative efficacy and safety. We systematically searched databases and extracted data from randomized controlled trials, which compared fluoropyrimidine-based regimens as first-line treatment in AGC.

However, the optimal radiation dose/fractionation remains elusive. This study reviewed current evidence and explored the dose-response relationship in patients with LS-SCLC who were treated with radiochemotherapy.

Objective: Glasgow prognostic score (GPS), an inflammation-based scoring system, has been evaluated in various cancers. However, its clinical significance remains unclear in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Therefore, it is necessary to conduct a meta-analysis to explore the prognostic value of GPS in NSCLC patients.

Background: Cisplatin (DDP)-based chemotherapy is the mainstay of first-line therapy for lung cancer. However, their efficacy is often limited by the existence or development of chemoresistance. The aim of this study was to find and investigate the function of miRNAs in cisplatin (DDP)-resistant non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) A549 cell.

Lung cancer is a leading cause of cancer-related mortality worldwide, and concurrent chemoradiotherapy has been explored as a therapeutic option. However, the chemotherapeutic agents cannot be administered for most patients at full doses safely with radical doses of thoracic radiation, and further optimizations of the chemotherapy regimen to be given with radiation are needed. In this study, we examined the effects of suberoylanilide hydroxamic acid (SAHA) and cisplatin on DNA damage repairs, and determined the combination effects of SAHA and cisplatin on human non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) cells in response to treatment of ionizing radiation (IR), and on tumor growth of lung cancer H460 xenografts receiving radiotherapy.

Glioma represents one of the main causes of cancer-related death worldwide. Unfortunately, its exact molecular mechanisms remain poorly understood, which limits the prognosis and therapy. This study aimed to identify the critical genes, transcription factors and the possible biochemical pathways that may affect glioma progression at transcription level.

Diabetic nephropathy (DN) is the leading cause of end-stage renal disease (ESRD). DN is characterized by glomerular extracellular matrix accumulation, mesangial expansion, basement membrane thickening, and renal interstitial fibrosis. To date, mounting evidence has shown that H2 relaxin possesses powerful antifibrosis properties; however, the mechanisms of H2 relaxin on diabetic nephropathy remain unknown.

Purpose: Whole-brain radiation therapy (WBRT) is generally considered as an efficient strategy to improve blood-brain barrier (BBB) permeability by damaging BBB structure and is therefore, used as a promising pretreatment of chemotherapy. However, the impact of radiotherapy on leaky BBB is still controversial for the reason that BBB of metastatic brain tumor lesion had been breached by tumor metastasizing. Herein, we conducted a self-controlled study to evaluate the effect of WBRT on the permeability of BBB in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients with brain metastases (BM).

For many decades, lung cancer has been the most common cancer and the leading cause of cancer death worldwide. More than 50% of non-small-cell lung cancer patients receive radiotherapy (alone or in combination with chemotherapy or surgery) during their treatment. The intrinsic radiosensitivity of tumors and dose-limiting toxicity restrict the curative potential of radiotherapy.

Afatinib is a second-generation of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) tyrosine kinase inhibitor and has shown a significant clinical benefit in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients with EGFR-activating mutations. However, the potential therapeutic effects of afatinib combining with other modalities, including ionizing radiation (IR), are not well understood. In this study, we developed a gefitinib-resistant cell subline (PC-9-GR) with a secondary EGFR mutation (T790M) from NSCLC PC-9 cells after chronic exposures to increasing doses of gefitinib.

Epidemiologic studies that investigate whether vitamin C and E intake protects against bladder cancer have yielded inconsistent results. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of published cohort and case-control studies to summarize the epidemiologic evidence investigating vitamin C and E intake and bladder cancer. Studies were identified through a search of PubMed and Embase databases and of references from relevant publications.
