Second Primary Malignancy Risk in Multiple Myeloma from 1975 to 2018.

Cancers (Basel)

October 2022

The Pq Laboratory of BiomeDx/Rx, Department of Biomedical Engineering, Binghamton University SUNY, Binghamton, NY 13902, USA.

As the survival times for multiple myeloma (MM) patients continue to extend, the risk of a second primary malignancy (SPM) among MM survivors has become a topic of increasing concern within the medical community. The Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) 9 Registry Database was used to evaluate the risk and survival of SPM among MM survivors from 1975 to 2018. The standardized incidence ratio (SIR), absolute excess risk (AER), and cumulative incidence (CMI) of SPM for MM risk were calculated.

State Key Laboratory of Bioelectronics, Department of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery, Zhongda Hospital, School of Life Sciences and Technology, Advanced Institute for Life and Health, Jiangsu Province High-Tech Key Laboratory for Bio-Medical Research, Southeast University, Nanjing, Jiangsu 210096, China.

Cochlear implantation has become the most effective treatment method for patients with profound and total hearing loss. However, its therapeutic efficacy is dependent on the number and normal physiological function of cochlear implant-targeted spiral ganglion neurons (SGNs). Electrical stimulation can be used as an effective cue to regulate the morphology and function of excitatory cells.

Shidan granule is an in-hospital traditional Chinese medicine prescription with obvious clinical effects in the treatment of chronic atrophic gastritis. Characterizing the compounds of Shidan granule and exploring the absorbed prototype constituents and metabolites in the blood is significant to understand its effective compounds. In this work, a reliable approach based on ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography combined with quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry was performed for systematic analysis of chemical substances of Shidan granule and their metabolites in rat plasma.

Collagenolysis-dependent DDR1 signalling dictates pancreatic cancer outcome.

Nature

October 2022

Laboratory of Gene Regulation and Signal Transduction, Departments of Pharmacology and Pathology, School of Medicine, University of California San Diego, La Jolla, CA, USA.

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is a highly desmoplastic, aggressive cancer that frequently progresses and spreads by metastasis to the liver. Cancer-associated fibroblasts, the extracellular matrix and type I collagen (Col I) support or restrain the progression of PDAC and may impede blood supply and nutrient availability. The dichotomous role of the stroma in PDAC, and the mechanisms through which it influences patient survival and enables desmoplastic cancers to escape nutrient limitation, remain poorly understood.

Background: Tertiary lymphoid structures (TLSs) are crucial in promoting and maintaining positive anti-tumor immune responses. The tumor stroma has a powerful immunosuppressive function that could exclude tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes from the tumor beds and lead to a "cold" phenotype. TLSs and tumor stroma percentage (TSP) are significantly associated with the prognosis of patients with certain cancers.

Microvesicles: the functional mediators in sorafenib resistance.

Cancer Drug Resist

June 2022

State Key Laboratory of Bioelectronics, School of Biological Science and Medical Engineering, Southeast University, Nanjing 210096, Jiangsu, China.

Overcoming drug resistance in cancer therapies remains challenging, and the tumor microenvironment plays an important part in it. Microvesicles (MVs) are functional natural carriers of cellular information, participate in intercellular communication, and dynamically regulate the tumor microenvironment. They contribute to drug resistance by transferring functional molecules between cells.

Aim: Astrocytes are connected by gap junctions Connexin43 (GJs-Cx43) forming an extensive intercellular network and maintain brain homeostasis. Perioperative neurocognitive disorder (PND) occurs frequently after anesthesia/surgery and worsens patient outcome, but the neural circuit mechanisms remain unclear. This study aimed to determine the effects of the GJs-Cx43-mediated astrocytic network on PND and ascertain the underlying neural circuit mechanism.

Pharyngocutaneous fistula is the most common complication after total laryngectomy and is difficult to heal. Although conservative treatment and surgical repair are effective, they often take longer and additional trips to the operating room, which undoubtedly increases the financial burden on patients. Especially in combination with diseases such as diabetes and hypertension, which affect the efficacy of surgery.

Dyslipidemia has been associated with cancer risk, yet the relationship between lipid ratios and nonsmall-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is still unclear. This study aimed to explore the value of lipid ratios, including total cholesterol/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (TC/HDL-C) and triglyceride/HDL-C (TG/HDL-C) as predictors of NSCLC in a Chinese population. Adult patients with histologically confirmed NSCLC, without a previous history of cancer, concomitant disease associated with lipid metabolism disorders, or usage of lipid-lowering drugs, were enrolled from a single center.

Three-dimensional (3D) bioprinting technology is an effective method for exploring the biological functions of hepatocytes by building biomimetic 3D microenvironments. Various hepatic tissue models have been developed for disease modeling, drug screening, and tissue regeneration using 3D bioprinting technology. Human-induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs) are a promising cell source for the generation of functional hepatocytes for bioprinting.

Hepatocellular Carcinoma (HCC) is the most frequent malignant tumor of the liver, but its prognosis is poor. Histone acetylation is an important epigenetic regulatory mode that modulates chromatin structure and transcriptional status to control gene expression in eukaryotic cells. Generally, histone acetylation and deacetylation processes are controlled by the opposing activities of histone acetyltransferases (HATs) and histone deacetylases (HDACs).
