As the survival times for multiple myeloma (MM) patients continue to extend, the risk of a second primary malignancy (SPM) among MM survivors has become a topic of increasing concern within the medical community. The Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) 9 Registry Database was used to evaluate the risk and survival of SPM among MM survivors from 1975 to 2018. The standardized incidence ratio (SIR), absolute excess risk (AER), and cumulative incidence (CMI) of SPM for MM risk were calculated.

Cochlear implantation has become the most effective treatment method for patients with profound and total hearing loss. However, its therapeutic efficacy is dependent on the number and normal physiological function of cochlear implant-targeted spiral ganglion neurons (SGNs). Electrical stimulation can be used as an effective cue to regulate the morphology and function of excitatory cells.

Shidan granule is an in-hospital traditional Chinese medicine prescription with obvious clinical effects in the treatment of chronic atrophic gastritis. Characterizing the compounds of Shidan granule and exploring the absorbed prototype constituents and metabolites in the blood is significant to understand its effective compounds. In this work, a reliable approach based on ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography combined with quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry was performed for systematic analysis of chemical substances of Shidan granule and their metabolites in rat plasma.

Background: Anti-melanoma differentiation-associated gene 5 antibody-positive dermatomyositis with interstitial lung disease (anti-MDA5 DM-ILD) is a disease with high mortality. We sought to develop an effective and convenient prediction tool to estimate mortality risk in patients with anti-MDA5 DM-ILD and inform clinical decision-making early.
Methods: This prognostic study included Asian patients with anti-MDA5 DM-ILD hospitalized at the Nanjing Drum Hospital from December 2016 to December 2020.

Water contamination resulting from heavy metal ions (HMIs) poses a severe threat to public health and the ecosystem. Attempts are tending to develop functional materials to realize efficient and intelligent adsorption of HMIs. Herein, self-propelled structural color cylindrical micromotors (SCCMs) with reversible HMIs adsorption capacity and self-reporting property are presented.

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is a highly desmoplastic, aggressive cancer that frequently progresses and spreads by metastasis to the liver. Cancer-associated fibroblasts, the extracellular matrix and type I collagen (Col I) support or restrain the progression of PDAC and may impede blood supply and nutrient availability. The dichotomous role of the stroma in PDAC, and the mechanisms through which it influences patient survival and enables desmoplastic cancers to escape nutrient limitation, remain poorly understood.

Background: Tertiary lymphoid structures (TLSs) are crucial in promoting and maintaining positive anti-tumor immune responses. The tumor stroma has a powerful immunosuppressive function that could exclude tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes from the tumor beds and lead to a "cold" phenotype. TLSs and tumor stroma percentage (TSP) are significantly associated with the prognosis of patients with certain cancers.

Background And Purpose: The relationship between triglyceride glucose (TyG) index and gynaecologic and breast cancers is unclear. We hypothesized that an increase in the TyG index is associated with elevated risk of cancers of the uterine, cervix, ovary and breast.
Methods And Results: For this observational study, we collected data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANSE, 1999-2018).

N6-methyladenosine (m6A) regulators play an important role in tumorigenesis; however, their role in multiple myeloma (MM) remains unknown. This study aimed to create an m6A RNA regulators prognostic signature for MM patients. We integrated data from the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation CoMMpass Study and the Genotype-Tissue Expression database to analyze gene expression profiles of 21 m6A regulators.

Overcoming drug resistance in cancer therapies remains challenging, and the tumor microenvironment plays an important part in it. Microvesicles (MVs) are functional natural carriers of cellular information, participate in intercellular communication, and dynamically regulate the tumor microenvironment. They contribute to drug resistance by transferring functional molecules between cells.

Aim: Astrocytes are connected by gap junctions Connexin43 (GJs-Cx43) forming an extensive intercellular network and maintain brain homeostasis. Perioperative neurocognitive disorder (PND) occurs frequently after anesthesia/surgery and worsens patient outcome, but the neural circuit mechanisms remain unclear. This study aimed to determine the effects of the GJs-Cx43-mediated astrocytic network on PND and ascertain the underlying neural circuit mechanism.

Pharyngocutaneous fistula is the most common complication after total laryngectomy and is difficult to heal. Although conservative treatment and surgical repair are effective, they often take longer and additional trips to the operating room, which undoubtedly increases the financial burden on patients. Especially in combination with diseases such as diabetes and hypertension, which affect the efficacy of surgery.

Dyslipidemia has been associated with cancer risk, yet the relationship between lipid ratios and nonsmall-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is still unclear. This study aimed to explore the value of lipid ratios, including total cholesterol/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (TC/HDL-C) and triglyceride/HDL-C (TG/HDL-C) as predictors of NSCLC in a Chinese population. Adult patients with histologically confirmed NSCLC, without a previous history of cancer, concomitant disease associated with lipid metabolism disorders, or usage of lipid-lowering drugs, were enrolled from a single center.

Three-dimensional (3D) bioprinting technology is an effective method for exploring the biological functions of hepatocytes by building biomimetic 3D microenvironments. Various hepatic tissue models have been developed for disease modeling, drug screening, and tissue regeneration using 3D bioprinting technology. Human-induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs) are a promising cell source for the generation of functional hepatocytes for bioprinting.

Hepatocellular Carcinoma (HCC) is the most frequent malignant tumor of the liver, but its prognosis is poor. Histone acetylation is an important epigenetic regulatory mode that modulates chromatin structure and transcriptional status to control gene expression in eukaryotic cells. Generally, histone acetylation and deacetylation processes are controlled by the opposing activities of histone acetyltransferases (HATs) and histone deacetylases (HDACs).

Objective: This study aimed to comprehensively investigate the relationship between the survival differences and socioeconomic status (SES) in patients with multiple myeloma (MM) and construct a predictive nomogram to assess clinical outcomes of MM patients.
Methods: The Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) census tract-level SES database provides two specialized attributes: SES index and rurality. Using this database, 37,819 patients diagnosed with MM between January 2007 and December 2016 were enrolled.

Understanding the role of meteorological factors in the transmission dynamics of respiratory infectious diseases remains challenging. Our study was to comprehensively investigate the nonlinear effects of environmental factors on influenza transmission, based on multi-region surveillance data from mainland China. An approach related to time-varying reproduction number (R) was proposed, which extracts the environment-related components from R to estimate the relationship between environmental factors and influenza transmission based on a mixed-effects regression model.
