Immunotherapy has made progress in the treatment of tumours; however, in patients with pancreatic cancer, immunotherapy has not achieved effective results. The present study investigated changes in the immune microenvironment during tumour development and progression, and the relationship between the immune microenvironment and prognosis, to clarify the mechanism of immune escape in pancreatic cancer. A total of 40 patients with pancreatic cancer (including 22 with stage I-II disease and 18 with stage III-IV disease) and 20 patients with chronic pancreatitis were included in the present study.

Article Synopsis
  • Pyroptosis, a form of cell death, is gaining interest for its connections to various cancers, with gasdermins (GSDMs) being highlighted for their roles in this process especially in gastric cancer (GC).
  • The study utilized multiple databases to analyze GSDMs' expression and its correlation to patient prognosis, finding that higher levels of GSDME are linked to shorter overall survival in GC patients.
  • GSDMs were associated with immune cell infiltration and specific enzymatic activities, suggesting potential diagnostic and prognostic significance for GSDMs in GC, although further research is needed to confirm these findings.

Front Endocrinol (Lausanne)

November 2024

Department of Neurology, The Quzhou Affiliated Hospital of Wenzhou Medical University, Quzhou People's Hospital, Quzhou, Zhejiang, China.

Article Synopsis
  • Ischemic stroke-associated pneumonia (iSAP) affects around 10% of stroke patients during their hospital stay, highlighting the need for better predictive tools as current scales are ineffective.
  • This study analyzed 1,767 acute ischemic stroke patients to assess the predictive value of euthyroid sick syndrome (ESS) as a biomarker for iSAP, finding that older age and comorbidities like atrial fibrillation and COPD increase the risk.
  • Results indicate that ESS is a significant predictor of iSAP, with a sensitivity of 35.64% and specificity of 87.92%, suggesting its potential use in identifying at-risk stroke patients early on.

Article Synopsis
  • * Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) play a role in CRC by influencing vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) expression, which is linked to tumor progression and poor survival outcomes.
  • * Research identified a specific lncRNA that, when upregulated in CRC tissues, enhances blood vessel formation and cancer cell migration, suggesting it could be targeted for new CRC therapies and serve as a biomarker for prognosis.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aims to assess the effectiveness of combining microfracture treatment with fibrinogen and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) for knee osteoarthritis, addressing a common yet under-researched treatment approach.
  • A total of 113 patients were analyzed, with one group receiving the combined treatment and the other only microfracture, to evaluate differences in knee function and quality of life over time.
  • Results showed that patients in the combined treatment group experienced significantly better improvements in quality of life and knee function scores compared to those who received only microfracture, indicating potential benefits of the combined approach in managing knee osteoarthritis.

Introduction: Mesenchymal stromal cell (MSC)-based cell therapy is a promising approach for various inflammatory disorders based on their immunosuppressive capacity. Osteopontin (OPN) regulates several cellular functions including tissue repair, bone metabolism and immune reaction. However, the biological function of OPN in regulating the immunosuppressive capacity of MSCs remains elusive.

Objective: Current scoring systems for short-term prognosis in patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) lack coverage of risk factors and have limitations in risk stratification. The aim of this study was to develop a novel assessment system based on laboratory indicators and frailty quantification to better infer short-term prognosis and risk indication in patients with AMI.

Methods: A total of 365 patients with MI from January 2022 to June 2023 in Northern Jiangsu Province Hospital were included.

  • Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) are new treatments for stomach and esophagus cancers, but it's hard to tell which patients will benefit from them.
  • * Researchers created a special computer program that uses gene information to predict how well patients will respond to these treatments.
  • * The study found that a drug called trametinib could be effective, especially for patients identified as high-risk through this new method.

Revisiting the survival paradox between stage IIB/C and IIIA colon cancer.

Sci Rep

September 2024

Department of General Surgery, Changshu No.5 People's Hospital, No. 289, Zhujiang Road, Changshu, 215500, Jiangsu, China.

Article Synopsis
  • - Patients with stage IIB/C colon cancer have worse survival rates compared to those with stage IIIA, according to a study using recent SEER data that analyzed nearly 4,700 cases from 2018-2021.
  • - The study found that the 3-year cancer-specific survival (CSS) rates were notably lower for stages IIB and IIC (73.1% and 70.3%) compared to stage IIIA (91%), highlighting significant survival discrepancies.
  • - Researchers suggest that the upcoming 9th edition of the AJCC staging system should revise the criteria by incorporating advanced diagnostic markers and recognizing the aggressive nature of T4 tumors to improve prognostic accuracy and treatment strategies.

Background: Miscarriage is a frustrating complication of pregnancy that is common among women of reproductive age. Insufficient decidualization which not only impairs embryo implantation but disturbs fetomaternal immune-tolerance, has been widely regarded as a major cause of miscarriage; however, the underlying mechanisms resulting in decidual impairment are largely unknown.

Methods: With informed consent, decidual tissue from patients with spontaneous abortion or normal pregnant women was collected to detect the expression profile of UCHL1.
