Article Synopsis
  • The study explored the role of resting heart rates (RHRs) in COVID-19 patients, revealing that higher RHRs were linked to worse health outcomes.
  • Among 136 patients, those with RHRs over 100 bpm had lower oxygen levels, higher temperatures, and exhibited various markers indicating worse health status.
  • The findings indicated that elevated RHRs, especially tachycardia, were significant independent predictors of higher mortality and increased need for ventilators in these patients.

Background: Epicardial fat volume (EFV) has been reported to be associated with coronary artery disease (CAD). CAD is the leading cause of myocardial ischemia and myocardial ischemia is closely related to major adverse cardiovascular events. We hypothesized that EFV could provide incremental value to traditional risk factors and coronary artery calcium score (CACS) in predicting myocardial ischemia in Chinese patients with suspected CAD.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine whether regional wall motion (WM) abnormalities by rest-only 99mtechnetium-sestamibi (99mTc-MIBI) electrocardiogram (ECG)-gated single-photon emission computerized tomography (SPECT) myocardial perfusion imaging (MPI) had incremental diagnostic value for detecting obstructive coronary artery disease (CAD) in suspected CAD patients.

Methods: This study retrospectively studied 255 consecutive suspected CAD patients who underwent rest-only ECG-gated SPECT MPI and were performed coronary angiography within 3 months. Obstructive CAD was defined as ≥70% narrowing of the inner diameter of the left anterior descending coronary artery, left circumflex coronary artery and right coronary artery or their main branches and ≥50% narrowing of the left main coronary artery.

We evaluated the effects of administering oxygen through nasal catheters inside the mask or through the mask on percutaneous oxygen partial pressure (PcO(2))and percutaneous carbon dioxide partial pressure (PcCO(2)) during noninvasive positive pressure ventilation (NPPV) to find a better way of administering oxygen, which could increase PcO(2) by increasing the inspired oxygen concentration. Ten healthy volunteers and 9 patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease complicated by type Ⅱ respiratory failure were included in this study. Oxygen was administered through a nasal catheter inside the mask or through the mask (oxygen flow was 3 and 5 L/min) during NPPV.
