Acinetobacter causes nosocomial infections and its biofilm formation can contribute to the survival on dry surfaces such as hospital environments. Thus, biofilm quantification and visualization are important methods to assess the potential of Acinetobacter strains to cause nosocomial infections. The biofilms forming on the surface of the microplate can be quantified in terms of volume and cell numbers.

X-ray radiation-induced intestinal barrier dysfunction in human epithelial Caco-2 cell monolayers.

Ecotoxicol Environ Saf

October 2023

Advanced Radiation Technology Institute, Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute, Jeongeup 56212, Republic of Korea.

Radiation therapy and unwanted radiological or nuclear exposure, such as nuclear plant accidents, terrorist attacks, and military conflicts, pose serious health issues to humans. Dysfunction of the intestinal epithelial barrier and the leakage of luminal antigens and bacteria across the barrier have been linked to various human diseases. Intestinal permeability is regulated by intercellular structures, termed tight junctions (TJs), which are disrupted after radiation exposure.

Radiation molecularly transforms naturally occurring products by inducing the methoxylation, hydroxylation, and alkylation of parent compounds, thereby affecting the anti-inflammatory capacities of those compounds. Minaprine (1) modified by ionizing radiation generated the novel hydroxymethylation hydropyridazine (2), and its chemical structure was determined based on NMR and HRESIMS spectra. Compared to the original minaprine, the novel generated product showed a highly enhanced anti-inflammatory capacity inhibited nitric oxide (NO) and prostaglandin E (PGE) production in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated RAW 264.

Purpose: Reproduction inhibition of the pine wood nematode (PWN) by electron beam (e-beam) irradiation both in vitro and in vivo was tested to determine if ionizing radiation could control the PWN by reducing survival and preventing reproduction, thus reducing the risk of pine wilt disease (PWD) spread.

Materials And Methods: E-beam (10 MeV) irradiation treatment at different doses (0-4 kGy) was applied to PWNs in a Petri dish. Treatment of pine wood logs infested with PWNs was performed at 10 kGy.

Stem Cells Transl Med

July 2023

Department of Health Sciences and Technology, Samsung Advanced Institute for Health Sciences and Technology (SAIHST), Sungkyunkwan University, Seoul, South Korea.

A major clinical hurdle to translate MSC-derived extracellular vesicles (EVs) is the lack of a method to scale-up the production of EVs with customized therapeutic properties. In this study, we tested whether EV production by a scalable 3D-bioprocessing method is feasible and improves neuroplasticity in animal models of stroke using MRI study. MSCs were cultured in a 3D-spheroid using a micro-patterned well.

Low-dose radiation therapy (LDRT) can suppress intractable inflammation, such as that in rheumatoid arthritis, and is used for treating more than 10,000 rheumatoid arthritis patients annually in Europe. Several recent clinical trials have reported that LDRT can effectively reduce the severity of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) and other cases of viral pneumonia. However, the therapeutic mechanism of LDRT remains unelucidated.

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a common respiratory pathogen that causes lower respiratory diseases among infants and elderly people. Moreover, formalin-inactivated RSV (FI-RSV) vaccine induces serious enhanced respiratory disease (ERD). Radiation has been investigated as an alternative approach for producing inactivated or live-attenuated vaccines, which enhance the antigenicity and heterogeneous protective effects of vaccines compared with conventional formalin inactivation.

Background: Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) has a relatively short shelf life as a result of rapid ripening, limiting its transportability and marketability. Recently, gamma irradiation has emerged as a viable method for delaying tomato fruit ripening. Although few studies have shown that gamma irradiation delays the ripening of tomatoes, the underlying mechanism remains unknown.

May 2023

Department of Food Science and Biotechnology, Daegu University, Gyeongsan 38453, Republic of Korea. Electronic address:

A rapid and simple enzymatic transformation of the representative coumarin esculetin (1) with polyphenol oxidase originating from Agaricus bisporus afforded five new oxidized metabolites, esculetinins A (2), B (3), C (4), D (5), and E (6), together with the known compound isoeuphorbetin (7). The structures of the oligomerized transformation products were established on the basis of spectroscopic interpretations. The esculetin oligomers 2 and 3 revealed highly enhanced inhibitory activities against α-glucosidase, with IC values of 0.

May 2023

Department of Plant Biotechnology, Korea University, 145 Anam-ro, Seongbuk-gu, Seoul, 02841, Republic of Korea; Ojeong Plant Breeding Research Center, Korea University, 145 Anam-ro, Seongbuk-gu, Seoul, 02841, Republic of Korea. Electronic address:

The importance of oats has increased because of their high nutritional value and health benefits in the human diet. High-temperature stress during the reproductive growth period has a detrimental effect on grain morphology by changing the structure and concentration of several seed-storage proteins. DA1, a conserved ubiquitin-proteasome pathway component, plays an important role in regulating grain size by controlling cell proliferation in maternal integuments during the grain-filling stage.

Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) is attracting attention as a new treatment technique for brain lesions, and many animal studies showing its effects have been reported. However, the findings of animal application researches cannot directly represent the effects of rTMS in human, mainly due to size difference and mechanistic characteristics of rTMS. Therefore, the authors purposed to develop a mouse rTMS to simulate clinical application and to confirm.

Phosphorylation state-dependent interactions of the phosphoenolpyruvate (PEP):carbohydrate phosphotransferase system (PTS) components with transcription factors play a key role in carbon catabolite repression (CCR) by glucose in bacteria. Glucose inhibits the PTS-dependent transport of fructose and is preferred over fructose in Vibrio cholerae, but the mechanism is unknown. We have recently shown that, contrary to Escherichia coli, the fructose-dependent transcriptional regulator FruR acts as an activator of the fru operon in V.

Red and blue light-specific metabolic changes in soybean seedlings.

Front Plant Sci

March 2023

Department of Smart Farm Science, College of Life Sciences, Kyung Hee University, Yongin, Republic of Korea.

Red and blue artificial light sources are commonly used as photosynthetic lighting in smart farm facilities, and they can affect the metabolisms of various primary and secondary metabolites. Although the soybean plant contains major flavonoids such as isoflavone and flavonol, using light factors to produce specific flavonoids from this plant remains difficult because the regulation of light-responded flavonoids is poorly understood. In this study, metabolic profiling of soybean seedlings in response to red and blue lights was evaluated, and the isoflavone-flavonol regulatory mechanism under different light irradiation periods was elucidated.

Overexpression of S-Adenosylmethionine Synthetase in Recombinant for Enhanced Lipid Production.

J Microbiol Biotechnol

March 2023

Department of Biotechnology and Bioengineering, Chonnam National University, Gwangju 61186, Republic of Korea.

Microalgae are attracting much attention as promising, eco-friendly producers of bioenergy due to their fast growth, absorption of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, and production capacity in wastewater and salt water. However, microalgae can only accumulate large quantities of lipid in abiotic stress, which reduces productivity by decreasing cell growth. In this study, the strategy was investigated to increase cell viability and lipid production by overexpressing S-adenosylmethionine (SAM) synthetase (SAMS) in the microalga .
