Background: Language disturbances are a core feature of schizophrenia, often studied as a formal thought disorder. The neurobiology of language in schizophrenia has been addressed within the same framework, that language and thought are equivalents considering symptoms and not signs. This review aims to systematically examine published peer-reviewed studies that employed neuroimaging techniques to investigate aberrant brain-language networks in individuals with schizophrenia in relation to linguistic signs.

Food availability has been endangered by recent global events, where agriculture, the main food source for the global population, is expected to increase even more to fulfill the growing food demand. Along with food production, water and energy consumption are also increased, leading to over-extraction of groundwater and an excess emission of greenhouse gases due to fossil fuel consumption. In this context, a balance of these three resources is crucial; therefore, the water-energy-food nexus is considered to address the previous issues by designing an energy-water management system based on robust predictive control.

Diversity in brain health is influenced by individual differences in demographics and cognition. However, most studies on brain health and diseases have typically controlled for these factors rather than explored their potential to predict brain signals. Here, we assessed the role of individual differences in demographics (age, sex, and education; n = 1298) and cognition (n = 725) as predictors of different metrics usually used in case-control studies.

The neurocomputational model 'Directions into Velocities of Articulators' (DIVA) was developed to account for various aspects of normal and disordered speech production and acquisition. The neural substrates of DIVA were established through functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), providing physiological validation of the model. This study introduces DIVA_EEG an extension of DIVA that utilizes electroencephalography (EEG) to leverage the high temporal resolution and broad availability of EEG over fMRI.

Visually evoked steady-state potentials (SSVEPs) are neural responses elicited by visual stimuli oscillating at specific frequencies. In this study, we introduce a novel LED stimulator system explicitly designed for steady-state visual stimulation, offering precise control over visual stimulus parameters, including frequency resolution, luminance, and the ability to control the phase at the end of the stimulation. The LED stimulator provides a personalized, modular, and affordable option for experimental setups.

Introduction: Harmonization protocols that address batch effects and cross-site methodological differences in multi-center studies are critical for strengthening electroencephalography (EEG) signatures of functional connectivity (FC) as potential dementia biomarkers.
Methods: We implemented an automatic processing pipeline incorporating electrode layout integrations, patient-control normalizations, and multi-metric EEG source space connectomics analyses.
Results: Spline interpolations of EEG signals onto a head mesh model with 6067 virtual electrodes resulted in an effective method for integrating electrode layouts.

Filtering and smoothing algorithms are key tools to develop decision-making strategies and parameter identification techniques in different areas of research, such as economics, financial data analysis, communications, and control systems. These algorithms are used to obtain an estimation of the system state based on the sequentially available noisy measurements of the system output. In a real-world system, the noisy measurements can suffer a significant loss of information due to (among others): (i) a reduced resolution of cost-effective sensors typically used in practice or (ii) a digitalization process for storing or transmitting the measurements through a communication channel using a minimum amount of resources.

Astrocytes are abundant cells of the central nervous system (CNS) and are involved in processes including synapse formation/function, ion homeostasis, neurotransmitter uptake, and neurovascular coupling. Recent evidence indicates that astrocytes show diverse molecular, structural, and physiological properties within the CNS. This heterogeneity is reflected in differences in astrocyte structure, gene expression, functional properties, and responsiveness to injury/pathological conditions.

Slow-wave sleep cortical brain activity, conformed by slow-oscillations and sleep spindles, plays a key role in memory consolidation. The increase of the power of the slow-wave events, obtained by auditory sensory stimulation, positively correlates with memory consolidation performance. However, little is known about the experimental protocol maximizing this effect, which could be induced by the power of slow-oscillation, the number of sleep spindles, or the timing of both events' co-occurrence.

In this work, clustering analysis of two partial nitritation-anammox (PN-A) moving bed biofilm reactors (MBBR) containing different types of carrier material was explored for the identification of patterns and operational conditions that may benefit process performance. Neural entrainment is the synchronization of neural activity to the frequency of repetitive external stimuli, which can be observed as an increase in the electroencephalogram (EEG) power spectrum at the driving frequency, -also known as the steady-state response. Although it has been systematically reported that the entrained EEG oscillation persists for approximately three cycles after stimulus offset, the neural mechanisms underpinning it remain unknown. Focusing on alpha oscillations, we adopt the dynamical excitation/inhibition framework, which suggests that phases of entrained EEG signals correspond to alternating excitatory/inhibitory states of the neural circuitry.

Removal of artifacts induced by muscle activity is crucial for analysis of the electroencephalogram (EEG), and continues to be a challenge in experiments where the subject may speak, change facial expressions, or move. Ensemble empirical mode decomposition with canonical correlation analysis (EEMD-CCA) has been proven to be an efficient method for denoising of EEG contaminated with muscle artifacts. EEMD-CCA, likewise the majority of algorithms, does not incorporate any statistical information of the artifact, namely, electromyogram (EMG) recorded over the muscles actively contaminating the EEG.

In this work, we propose a natural model for information flow in the brain through a neural message-passing dynamics on a structural network of macroscopic regions, such as the human connectome (HC). In our model, each brain region is assumed to have a binary behavior (active or not), the strengths of interactions among them are encoded in the anatomical connectivity matrix defined by the HC, and the dynamics of the system is defined by the Belief Propagation (BP) algorithm, working near the critical point of the network. We show that in the absence of direct external stimuli the BP algorithm converges to a spatial map of activations that is similar to the Default Mode Network (DMN) of the brain, which has been defined from the analysis of functional MRI data.

The amplitude of auditory steady-state responses (ASSRs) generated in the brainstem of rats exponentially decreases over the sequential averaging of EEG epochs.
