Co-occurrence Interaction Networks of Extremophile Species Living in a Copper Mining Tailing.

Copper mining tailings are characterized by high concentrations of heavy metals and an acidic pH, conditions that require an extreme adaptation for any organism. Currently, several bacterial species have been isolated and characterized from mining environments; however, very little is known about the structure of microbial communities and how their members interact with each other under the extreme conditions where they live. This work generates a co-occurrence network, representing the bacterial soil community from the Cauquenes copper tailing, which is the largest copper waste deposit worldwide.

Diabetic cardiomyopathy (DCM) is a severe complication of diabetes developed mainly in poorly controlled patients. In DCM, several clinical manifestations as well as cellular and molecular mechanisms contribute to its phenotype. The production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), chronic low-grade inflammation, mitochondrial dysfunction, autophagic flux inhibition, altered metabolism, dysfunctional insulin signaling, cardiomyocyte hypertrophy, cardiac fibrosis, and increased myocardial cell death are described as the cardinal features involved in the genesis and development of DCM.

In drug delivery, one widely used way of overcoming the biopharmaceutical problems present in several active pharmaceutical ingredients, such as poor aqueous solubility, early instability, and low bioavailability, is the formation of inclusion compounds with cyclodextrins (CD). In recent years, the use of CD derivatives in combination with nanomaterials has shown to be a promising strategy for formulating new, optimized systems. The goals of this review are to give in-depth knowledge and critical appraisal of the main CD-modified or CD-based nanomaterials for drug delivery, such as lipid-based nanocarriers, natural and synthetic polymeric nanocarriers, nanosponges, graphene derivatives, mesoporous silica nanoparticles, plasmonic and magnetic nanoparticles, quantum dots and other miscellaneous systems such as nanovalves, metal-organic frameworks, Janus nanoparticles, and nanofibers.

High-risk human papillomaviruses (HR-HPVs) and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) are recognized oncogenic viruses involved in the development of a subset of head and neck cancers (HNCs). HR-HPVs are etiologically associated with a subset of oropharyngeal carcinomas (OPCs), whereas EBV is a recognized etiological agent of undifferentiated nasopharyngeal carcinomas (NPCs). Astrocyte reactivity is associated with poor repair capacity after injury to the brain, where chemical and physical changes occur in the damaged zone. Astrocyte surface proteins, such as integrins, are upregulated, and the release of pro-inflammatory molecules and extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins upon damage generate a stiffer matrix. Integrins play an important role in triggering a reactive phenotype in astrocytes, and we have reported that α β Integrin binds to the Thy-1 (CD90) neuronal glycoprotein, increasing astrocyte contractility and motility.

Gold nanoparticles (GNP) are tunable nanomaterials that can be used to develop rational therapeutic inhibitors against the formation of pathological aggregates of proteins. In the case of the pathological aggregation of the amyloid-β protein (Aβ), the shape of the GNP can slow down or accelerate its aggregation kinetics. However, there is a lack of elementary knowledge about how the curvature of GNP alters the interaction with the Aβ peptide and how this interaction modifies key molecular steps of fibril formation.
