Cystic echinococcosis (CE) caused by the metacestode form of Echinococcus granulosus is one of the important health problems in Turkey and in the world. In this study, whether or not the presence of CE in patients with a high eosinophil count should be determined was investigated. A total of 946 specimens from patients with a high eosinophil count (>or=350/mm3) were evaluated.

Candida species which cause local infections, may also lead to fatal systemic infections. The increasing incidence of non-albicans Candida, especially fluconazole susceptible or resistant dose-dependent C. glabrata, increased the importance of rapid and accurate species level identification for Candida.

The most frequently used methods for the diagnosis of cystic echinococcosis are ELISA, IHA and IFAT methods in routine laboratories. The aim of this study was to detect the optimum serological method which can be used routinely with the highest sensitivity and specificity. Forty CE cases with 40 controls, making a total of 80 patients, were included in the study.

Objectives: Chondral lesions of the knee joint present a difficult challenge because of their poor potential for spontaneous healing. In this study, we evaluated the results of the microfracture technique in the treatment of full-thickness chondral lesions.

Methods: The study included 20 patients (12 males, 8 females; mean age 44 years; range 18 to 60 years) who were treated with the microfracture technique for 22 lesions of osteoarthritis or traumatic chondral injuries.

Objective: There are findings about negative effects of angiotensin 1 (AT1) receptor stimulation at every stage of atherosclerosis formation. Recently, AT1 receptors, especially the effects of AT1 receptor antagonists on the regression of atherosclerosis, are being researched intensively. Measurement of carotid artery thickness has been accepted as a marker of atherosclerosis.

Identification of Candida species is important to guide treatment in vulvovaginal candidiasis which is seen frequently and needs long-term therapy due to recurrence. The aim of this study was to determine the species distribution of Candida isolated from vaginal specimens and evaluation of CHROMagar Candida medium in the laboratory diagnosis. Samples from 80 patients who were clinically diagnosed as vaginitis have been analysed in our laboratory.

Objective: Integrated backscatter (IBS) is an objective method to measure spontaneous echo contrast (SEC) quantitatively. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between the quantitative values of left atrial SEC measured by using IBS with its qualitative gradation as well as the left atrial appendix (LAA) functions and LAA tissue Doppler characteristics (TD).

Methods: Thirty-two patients (23 female, 9 male) with various diseases undergoing transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) were included.

Objective: Ultrasonic tissue characterization, based on the measurements of integrated backscatter (IBS) analysis, has the potential to provide quantitative information which could characterize the functional and structural state of cardiac muscle. In this study we aimed to determine whether the integrated backscatter is measurable and quantifiable in left ventricular walls in patients with dilated cardiomyopathy (DCMP) and can be used to identify changes in myocardial structure and contractility.

Methods: We studied 32 subjects: 16 patients with idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy who were free of atrial fibrillation, bundle branch block and valvular heart disease (12 male, 4 female, mean age 48 +/- 18) and 16 healthy volunteers (10 male, 6 female, mean age 46 +/- 8).

Objective: The determination of high risk patients for sudden death and sustained ventricular tachycardia after acute myocardial infarction constitutes the main goal to decrease morbidity and mortality. Every attempt that decreases the frequency of late potentials (LPs) on signal averaged ECG (SAECG) and corrected QT dispersion (QTc-d) may improve prognosis of patients. In this study, the effect of metoprolol on frequency of LPs and QTc-d was investigated.
