Aim: We studied the association between extracellular volume status and chronic kidney disease (CKD) progression; and the role of extracellular volume excess as a potential mediator in the relationship between matrix metalloproteinases (MMP)-2 and CKD progression in Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM).
Methods: We conducted a prospective cohort study of 1079 T2DM patients. Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) was performed to assess body fluid status.

Ramadan fasting, a month-long annual practice for Muslims, can be challenging for those who have diabetes mellitus with or without associated complications or pre-existing comorbidities, as well as healthcare providers involved in their care. Inadequate preparation for this fasting period can result in increased complications. We reviewed the current practice of Muslims with diabetes mellitus in Singapore who intend to fast during Ramadan, with particular attention on locally available evidence.

Aims: We examined the longitudinal relationship between baseline skeletal muscle mass and its change over time with eGFR decline and albuminuria progression among Asians with type 2 diabetes(T2D).
Methods: This was a prospective cohort study of 1272 T2D patients. Skeletal muscle mass was estimated using tetra-polar multi-frequency bio-impedance analysis and Skeletal Muscle Mass Index(SMI) was defined as skeletal muscle mass/weight * 100.

Aim: Little is known about whether overhydration (OH), measured using bioimpedance assay (BIA), is associated with CKD progression in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). We hypothesised that OH was a predictor, and pigment epithelium-derived factor (PEDF) was a modifiable risk factor of CKD progression.
Methods: We conducted a prospective cohort study of 1,065 patients with clinically euvolemic T2DM who attended the diabetes centre in a tertiary hospital or primary care clinic.

Aim: To study the relationship between genetic risk of beta cell dysfunction, young onset age and glycaemic progression in individuals with type 2 diabetes (T2D).
Materials And Methods: 1385 T2D outpatients were included in cross-sectional sub-study and 730 insulin-naïve outpatients were followed for 3 years in prospective sub-study. Genetic risk score (GRS) was derived from 24 beta cell dysfunction-related single nucleotide polymorphisms, with lower and upper 25 percentiles defined as low and high genetic risk.

Diabetes is a risk factor for developing severe COVID-19, but the pathogenesis remains unclear. We investigated if the association of diabetes and COVID-19 severity may be mediated by inflammation. We also hypothesized that this increased risk may extend to prediabetes.

Background: Leukocyte telomere length (LTL) is associated with obesity and obesity-related traits, and there are ethnic-specific determinants of LTL.
Objective: To evaluate LTL associations with obesity and metabolic parameters in Asian children with early-onset obesity.
Methods: Genomic DNA was extracted from peripheral blood leukocytes of a cohort of children with (N = 371) and without obesity (N = 23), and LTL was measured using quantitative PCR (qPCR).

Background And Aims: Arterial stiffness is a risk factor for chronic kidney disease progression (CKD). Pulse pressure is a surrogate marker of arterial stiffness. It is unclear if pulse pressure predicts CKD progression in type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Background: Studies investigating the association between depression and aortic stiffness in older patients with type 2 diabetes are lacking. We postulated an association between depressive symptoms and aortic stiffness, and this relationship may be mediated by increased adiposity.
Methods: We analyzed participants with type 2 diabetes aged 55 years or older (n = 958).

Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between telomere length (TL) in subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT), visceral adipose tissues (VAT), and leukocytes, as well as to examine the associations of TL in these tissues with postsurgical weight loss in Asians with severe obesity.
Methods: Presurgery TL was measured in leukocytes, SAT, and VAT of 91 patients who underwent weight loss surgery. Correlation between TL in multiple tissues was assessed using Pearson correlation.

Aim: To examine correlation between vascular measures and cognitive performance in type 2 diabetes (T2D).
Methods: This was a cross-sectional study on patients (N = 1167) aged ≥45 years attending Diabetes Centre in a tertiary hospital and primary care polyclinic. The following vascular measures were measured: systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), mean arterial pressure (MAP), pulse pressure (PP), pulse wave velocity (PWV) and augmentation index (AI).

Delayed wound healing is commonly associated with diabetes. It may lead to amputation and death if not treated in a timely fashion. Limited treatments are available partially due to the poor understanding of the complex disease pathophysiology.

Aims: Monogenic diabetes (also known as maturity-onset diabetes of the young or MODY) affects a subset of individuals with young-onset diabetes. We report our diagnostic work-up experience for such individuals.
Methods: Serving as a regional secondary-care diabetes centre in a multi-ethnic population, we receive referrals to evaluate MODY from endocrinologists in both public and private practice.

Severe familial hypercholesterolemia (SFH) is characterized by markedly elevated low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and severe early-onset cardiovascular disease if left untreated. We report on the decade-long therapeutic journey of a 15-year-old boy with SFH due to a severe compound heterozygous genotype. He presented at the age of 5 years with widespread xanthomas and LDL-C of 17.

Background: Fluid imbalance is associated with various clinical conditions, but the association between elevated extracellular-water to total-body-water (ECW/TBW) ratio, an indicator of fluid balance, and cognitive impairment is unknown. We aimed to investigate relationship between ECW/TBW ratio and cognitive function in type 2 diabetes mellitus.
Methods: This study was a cross-sectional design, comparing 1233 patients aged 61.

Introduction: This study aims to establish the Knowledge, Attitudes and Practices (KAP) of the general population (people with and without diabetes) towards diabetes. The study will examine (a) recognition and understanding of causes, prevention and treatment strategies of diabetes; (b) identify the knowledge gaps and behavioural patterns that may hamper diabetes prevention and control; (c) stigma towards and stigma perceived by people with diabetes and (d) awareness of anti-diabetes campaigns.
Methods And Analysis: The study is a nationwide, cross-sectional study of Singapore's general population aged 18 years and above (n=3000), comprising Chinese, Malay, Indian and other ethnic groups, who can understand English, Chinese, Malay or Tamil language.

Aim: To investigate the association between baseline plasma zinc-α2-glycoprotein and non-albuminuric chronic kidney disease progression in type 2 diabetes.
Methods: Adults with normoalbuminuria at entry (n=341; age 57±10 years, 52% men) were analysed. Chronic kidney disease progression was defined as a decrease in chronic kidney disease stage and a decline of ≥25% in estimated GFR from baseline.

Purpose: The utility of available scoring systems for type 2 diabetes (T2D) remission prediction after metabolic surgery has not been defined in a multi-ethnic Asian population like Singapore. We sought to assess the predictive performance of the Asia-developed ABCD scoring system for T2D remission after metabolic surgery, and develop a new algorithm to improve prediction.
Materials And Methods: We conducted a retrospective analysis of adults with T2D who underwent either Roux-en-Y gastric bypass or sleeve gastrectomy between 2007 and 2018, and followed for 1 year postoperatively (n = 114, mean age 46 ± 9 years, 48.

Introduction: Diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) is a common microvascular complication in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D). Apart from hyperglycemia, few modifiable risk factors have been identified. Endothelin-1 is a potent vasoconstrictor peptide, implicated in the causal pathway of microangiopathy.
