Background: Spontaneous reperfusion (SR) occurring before primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PPCI) can offer additional clinical benefits to patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). The Platelet-to-White Blood Cell Ratio (PWR) has been recognized as a prognostic indicator in various diseases. We aimed to explore the relationship between PWR and SR in patients with STEMI undergoing PPCI.

EEFSEC deficiency: A selenopathy with early-onset neurodegeneration.

Am J Hum Genet

January 2025

Institute of Medical Genetics and Applied Genomics, University of Tübingen, 72076 Tübingen, Germany; Center for Rare Disease, University of Tübingen, 72076 Tübingen, Germany; Genomics for Health in Africa (GHA), Africa-Europe Cluster of Research Excellence (CoRE).

Inborn errors of selenoprotein expression arise from deleterious variants in genes encoding selenoproteins or selenoprotein biosynthetic factors, some of which are associated with neurodegenerative disorders. This study shows that bi-allelic selenocysteine tRNA-specific eukaryotic elongation factor (EEFSEC) variants cause selenoprotein deficiency, leading to progressive neurodegeneration. EEFSEC deficiency, an autosomal recessive disorder, manifests with global developmental delay, progressive spasticity, ataxia, and seizures.

S-Sulfocysteine (SSC) is a metabolite derived from the metabolism of sulfur-containing amino acids. It has been implicated in neurotoxicity observed in children with sulfite oxidase deficiency. The aim of our study was to confirm the neurotoxic effects of SSC using a mouse hippocampal cell line (HT-22) and to investigate the role of apoptosis in these effects, especially in terms of caspase-3 activation and genotoxicity.

Article Synopsis
  • A team of over 180 researchers from more than 40 countries is addressing the issues related to "phantom agents," which are proposed pathogenic agents that are listed without concrete evidence of their existence.
  • These phantom agents, identified only through symptoms and lacking proper isolates or genetic data, create obstacles for trade and plant certification, making effective detection and risk assessment difficult.
  • The researchers recommend removing these agents from regulatory lists and updating standards in line with modern diagnostic methods to facilitate germplasm exchange and support global agriculture.

Objective: Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that emerges in early childhood and is characterized by difficulties in social communication, repetitive behaviors, and restricted interests. The Ras homolog (Rho)/Rho-kinase signaling pathway plays a critical role in maintaining synaptic structure and function, as it regulates the actin cytoskeleton. This study aims to investigate the expression of the Ras homolog (Rho) family member A (), Rho-kinase 1 (), and Rho-kinase 2 () genes within this pathway in relation to ASD.

Highly selective inhibitors of cyclin-dependent kinase 4 and 6 (CDK4/6is) have emerged as a standart of care for first- and second-line therapies in combination with endocrine therapy (ET) for HR+/HER2- metastatic breast cancer (MBC) patients. It has been reported that combination therapy is more effective than ET alone and is safe in elderly patients as well as young patients. Nevertheless, elderly and very old patients with HR+/HER2-MBC treated with CDK4/6 inhibitor (CDK4/6i) combinations are relatively underrepresented in randomized controlled trials.

In this study, the graft success and hearing improvement were compared in patients with subtotal or total tympanic membrane perforations following conchal cartilage-reinforced temporalis fascia graft tympanoplasty (CCRTT) versus traditional tragal island cartilage tympanoplasty (TICT). Fifty Type 1 tympanoplasties performed for subtotal or total tympanic membrane perforation were classified into 2 groups: CCRTT consisted of 23 patients and TICT consisted of 27 patients. The difference between these 2 groups was analyzed by means of graft success, reperforation, and postoperative hearing gain after 12 months.

LesionScanNet: dual-path convolutional neural network for acute appendicitis diagnosis.

Health Inf Sci Syst

December 2025

Section for Fisheries Technology, Institute of Aquatic Resources, DTU Aqua, Technical University of Denmark, 9850 Hirtshals, Denmark.

Acute appendicitis is an abrupt inflammation of the appendix, which causes symptoms such as abdominal pain, vomiting, and fever. Computed tomography (CT) is a useful tool in accurate diagnosis of acute appendicitis; however, it causes challenges due to factors such as the anatomical structure of the colon and localization of the appendix in CT images. In this paper, a novel Convolutional Neural Network model, namely, LesionScanNet for the computer-aided detection of acute appendicitis has been proposed.
