This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of daytime sleepiness (DS) and its impact on quality of life (QOL) in outpatients with schizophrenia in the maintenance phase, as well as to identify the factors associated with DS. A total of 191 outpatients with schizophrenia completed a self-administered questionnaire including questions on lifestyle, sleep habits, DS, QOL, and sleep disorders. Insomnia, DS, and QOL were evaluated by the Athens Insomnia Scale (AIS), the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS), and the MOS 8-Item Short-Form Health Survey (SF-8), respectively.

Lumbar epidural anesthesia is widely used for labor epidural analgesia (LEA), but it often results in insufficient analgesia in the sacral region. We report a case where we performed LEA using lumbar epidural anesthesia, and an asymptomatic sacral perineural cyst was considered the potential cause of inadequate analgesia in the sacral region. A 33-year-old primigravida was admitted with premature rupture of membranes.

Objective/background: The short-term efficacy and safety of daridorexant, a dual orexin receptor antagonist, has been demonstrated in Japanese patients with insomnia disorder. The objective of this study was to evaluate, in a non-overlapping patient population to the short-term study, the long-term safety and efficacy of daridorexant in Japanese patients with insomnia disorder.
Patients/methods: In this Phase 3 open-label study conducted in Japan, 154 patients with insomnia disorder were randomized to daridorexant 50 mg (n = 102) or 25 mg (n = 52) for 52 weeks.
Daridorexant is a dual orexin receptor antagonist for the treatment of insomnia. We report results from the first two randomised, double-blind clinical studies of daridorexant in Japanese subjects. In the Phase 1 study, daridorexant (10, 25, 50 mg) or placebo were administered in the morning for 4 days in 24 young (mean age 26.

Objective: This Phase 3 double-blind, placebo-controlled study evaluated the efficacy and safety of daridorexant in Japanese patients with insomnia disorder.
Patients/methods: 490 patients with insomnia disorder from 95 sites in Japan were randomized to daridorexant 50 mg (n = 163), 25 mg (n = 163) or placebo (n = 164) for 4 weeks, followed by a 7-day placebo run-out and a 30-day safety follow-up. The primary efficacy endpoints, in hierarchical order, were change from baseline at Week 4 in subjective total sleep time (sTST) and subjective latency to sleep onset (sLSO), for daridorexant 50 mg vs placebo.

Purpose: It was reported that maternal-infant bonding failure predicts abusive parenting. Maternal-infant bonding is important to prevent child abuse. This study aimed to investigate the association between prenatal depressive symptoms, anxiety, cortisol, and oxytocin levels, and postnatal maternal-infant bonding.

Background: Among assisted reproductive technologies, frozen thawed embryo transfer (FET) is associated with increased blood loss at delivery. Anesthesiologists need to be aware of new factors that affect postpartum blood loss. This study investigated whether FET cycles with or without hormonal support affect the amount of postpartum bleeding.

Adiponectin is a cytokine secreted from adipocytes and regulates metabolism. Although serum adiponectin levels show diurnal variations, it is not clear if the effects of adiponectin are time-dependent. Therefore, this study conducted locomotor activity analyses and various metabolic studies using the adiponectin knockout (APN (-/-)) and the APN (+/+) mice to understand whether adiponectin regulates the circadian rhythm of glucose and lipid metabolism.

This study aimed to investigate the association between insomnia symptoms and non-restorative sleep (NRS) in individuals with Typus melancholicus, a personality trait linked to depression, in the general population. We analyzed data from a Japanese cross-sectional survey of 2519 randomly sampled adults. Typus melancholicus was evaluated using a modified version of Kasahara's Typus melancholicus inventory (modified-KTM).

The incidence of chromosomal abnormalities in twin pregnancies is not well-studied. In this retrospective study, we investigated the frequency of chromosomal abnormalities in twin pregnancies and compared the incidence of chromosomal abnormalities in dichorionic diamniotic (DD) and monochorionic diamniotic (MD) twins. We used data from 57 clinical facilities across Japan.

Aims: A global movement, including in Asia, is seeking to establish integrated youth mental health services that provide early intervention in the continuum from mental health to mental illness. Clinical case management (CCM), in which a case manager becomes not only a coordinator of services but also a provider of psychosocial support, can establish a 'one-stop network' that supports youth in densely populated areas with various social resources. In 2019, we opened a community-based centre called 'SODA' in front of a metropolitan railway station, which was designed to be highly accessible, stigma-free and youth-friendly to provide CCM.

Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate the vitamin D status among healthy pregnant women in Japan, and to evaluate the effectiveness of the antenatal health guidance intervention for the pregnant women who were informed about their low vitamin D levels.
Methods: We measured the level of 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25[OH]D) using chemiluminescent immunoassay among the singleton pregnant women who received at antenatal routine check-up (8-24 weeks of gestation) with written consent during September 2017-September 2018. The measurement values were informed by the concerned physician and health guidance intervention was given to the pregnant women with inadequate Vitamin D status (25[OH]D < 30 ng/mL).

Aim: We aimed to evaluate the sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV), and negative predictive value (NPV) of noninvasive prenatal testing (NIPT) in high-risk pregnant women.
Methods: Pregnant women who underwent GeneTech NIPT, the most commonly used NIPT in Japan, between January 2015 and March 2019, at Japan NIPT Consortium medical sites were recruited for this study. The exclusion criteria were as follows: pregnant women with missing survey items, multiple pregnancy/vanishing twins, chromosomal abnormalities in the fetus other than the NIPT target disease, and nonreportable NIPT results.
Study Question: Is oocyte cryopreservation an applicable option for fertility preservation in unmarried patients with haematological malignancies?
Summary Answer: Oocyte cryopreservation via the vitrification method is accessible and may be considered an option for fertility preservation in unmarried patients with haematological malignancies.
What Is Known Already: Haematological malignancies are most commonly observed amongst adolescent and young adult women. Although the survival rate and life expectancy of those with haematological malignancies have improved, chemotherapy and radiotherapy may impair their reproductive potential.

In patients with schizophrenia, motivation has been assumed to act as an intervening factor between cognitive function and social functioning. Motivation is thought to comprise three domains defined by their orientations: intrinsic motivation, extrinsic motivation, and amotivation. Although these orientations can confound each other, the effects of motivation domains on social functioning remain obscure.

Background: This study aimed to investigate barriers to sperm cryopreservation for patients with advanced germ cell tumors.
Methods: We reviewed data collected from patients who underwent chemotherapy for advanced germ cell tumors in our institutions from 1996 to 2016. We divided sperm cryopreservation procedures into three steps: offering information about sperm cryopreservation, patients' decision making and sperm collection, and investigating the barriers in each step.

Objective: Functional capacity, which indicates one's ability to perform everyday living tasks, contributes to real-world functional performance in patients with schizophrenia. However, functional capacity is sometimes not comparable with functional performance in clinical settings. We hypothesized that specific personality traits are related to this capacity-performance discrepancy of functional outcome.
