Comparison of early and on-demand maternal feeding after Caesarean delivery: a prospective randomised trial.

Singapore Med J

October 2021

Acibadem Mehmet Ali Aydinlar University, Acibadem Maslak University Hospital, Obstetrics and Gynecology Department, İstanbul, Turkey.

Article Synopsis
  • The study compared early maternal feeding and on-demand feeding after Caesarean delivery, focusing on gastrointestinal issues and patient satisfaction.
  • A total of 262 women were divided into two groups: one received soft food two hours post-surgery, while the other ate when they wanted.
  • Results showed no significant differences in satisfaction or gastrointestinal complaints between the two groups, although the early feeding group started eating significantly sooner than the on-demand group.
  • The conclusion suggests that allowing early feeding does not worsen gastrointestinal problems and may enhance patient satisfaction, potentially shortening hospital stays and lowering costs.
