Article Synopsis
  • The primary challenge in chronic hepatitis B is the immune system's inability to eliminate the cccDNA associated with the virus.
  • Researchers are working on a new therapeutic vaccine utilizing a multi-epitope approach based on HBc and HBx proteins to target various HBV genotypes.
  • This vaccine candidate shows potential for strong immune responses, global effectiveness, and stability, indicating significant progress in combating chronic hepatitis B.

Background: An antimicrobial agent is needed for denture cleaning, such as lemongrass (LG), which has a bioactive antimicrobial component.

Methods: This research analyzed LG extract nanoparticles with a particle size analyzer, ZPA, and biofilm formation inhibition on resin acrylic surfaces.

Results: We found that there is high stability in nanoparticle size, while other concentrations, including chlorhexidine as a positive control, did not show any statistical differences.

The Association between Drug-Related Problems and Length of Stay of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus Patients.

Malays J Med Sci

August 2024

Department of Public Health, Faculty of Medicine, Public Health and Nursing, Gadjah Mada University, Yogyakarta, Indonesia.

Introduction: Drug-related problems (DRPs) are treatment-related occurrences that affect therapeutic efficacy. In a previous study, approximately 279 out of 330 (84.5%) patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) had experienced at least one DRP, including non-optimal drug effects ( = 240, 52.

Chronic hepatitis B virus infection (CHB) remains a global health concern, with currently available antiviral therapies demonstrating limited effectiveness in preventing hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) development. Two primary challenges in CHB treatment include the persistence of the minichromosome, covalently closed circular DNA (cccDNA) of the hepatitis B virus (HBV), and the failure of the host immune response to eliminate cccDNA. Recent findings indicate several host and HBV proteins involved in the epigenetic regulation of cccDNA, including HBV core protein (HBc) and HBV x protein (HBx).

This study discusses the composition and structure determination of a new multicomponent system from antiinflammatory natural ingredients, consisting of piperine (Pip) and 4-hydroxybenzoic acid (HBA), named Pip-HBA. In addition, this research studied its solubility and anti-inflammatory activity. After screening the stoichiometric proportions, this multicomponent system formation reaction was carried out using the solvent-dropped grinding and evaporation methods.

Background: The definition of feedback in clinical education has shifted from information delivery to student-teacher dialogue. However, based on Hofstede's theory, countries with large power distance or a robust social hierarchy and collectivistic cultural dimensions can reduce the feedback dialogue to a minimum. Indonesia is classified in this group, with some Asian, African, Mediterranean, and Latin American countries.

Currently, the challenge in dentistry is to revitalize dental pulp by utilizing tissue engineering technology; thus, a biomaterial is needed to facilitate the process. One of the three essential elements in tissue engineering technology is a scaffold. A scaffold acts as a three-dimensional (3D) framework that provides structural and biological support and creates a good environment for cell activation, communication between cells, and inducing cell organization.

Background: Rapid increase in information on coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has led to an infodemic that exposes older adults to a greater risk of anxiety.

Aims: To develop an animated educational video for COVID-19 prevention and management and evaluate its feasibility and preliminary effectiveness in improving knowledge and anxiety levels among older adults.

Methods: A pilot test of feasibility and preliminary effectiveness was conducted in three phases: expert agreement, content validation, and video creation.

Maintaining dental pulp vitality and preventing tooth loss are two challenges in endodontic treatment. A tooth lacking a viable pulp loses its defense mechanism and regenerative ability, making it more vulnerable to severe damage and eventually necessitating extraction. The tissue engineering approach has drawn attention as an alternative therapy as it can regenerate dentin-pulp complex structures and functions.

Normal weight obesity (NWO) is a new emerging phenotype of obesity, defined as a normal body mass index with a high body fat percentage. While several studies have described the impact of NWO on cardiometabolic risk factors, the association between them remains uncertain. This meta-analysis systematically evaluated cardiometabolic risk factors in adults with NWO compared to adults with normal weight lean (NWL).

Background: During the early embryological development of the face, complex orofacial failure results in a non-syndromic cleft lip and palate (NS CLP). The interferon regulatory factor 6 gene (IRF6) rs2235371 is a non-synonymous polymorphism that is one of the strong candidate genes associated with NS CLP.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to determine IRF6 rs2235371 as a risk factor for NS CLP and its phenotypes, including complete unilateral cleft lip and palate (CUCLP), bilateral cleft lip and palate (BCLP), cleft lip only (CL), and cleft palate only (CP), as well as to examine the effect of the polymorphism on the IRF6 mRNA expression levels among the Deutero-Malay race in Indonesia.

Hyperlipidemia is one of the leading causes of death and requires lipid-lowering treatment to reduce morbidity and mortality. Effective and safe alternative and adjunctive therapies could be beneficial for patients with hyperlipidemia. To assess the effect of a fiber-multivitamin combination product on the lipid parameters low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-c), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c), total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), and apolipoprotein B (Apo B) in patients with hypercholesterolemia, we conducted a double-blind, randomized, parallel-group study.

Int Endod J

August 2015

Section of Preventive and Public Health Dentistry, Division of Oral Health, Growth and Development, Faculty of Dental Science, Kyushu University, Fukuoka, Japan.

Aim: To characterize the microbial composition of persistent periapical lesions of root filled teeth using a molecular genetics approach.

Methodology: Apical lesion samples were collected from 12 patients (23-80 years old) who visited the Kyushu University Hospital for apicectomy with persistent periapical lesions associated with root filled teeth. DNA was directly extracted from each sample and the microbial composition was comprehensively analysed using clone library analysis of the 16S rRNA gene.
