We evaluated the AxSYM immunoassay for the quantification of cardiac troponin I (cTnI). Total assay imprecision, expressed as coefficient of variation, ranged between 5.6% and 8.

Potential risk factors for sporadic verocytotoxin-producing Escherichia coli (VTEC) infection in Belgium were investigated in a matched case-control study. Thirty-seven cases, 8 infected with O157 VTEC strains (all eaeA-positive), 29 with non-O157 VTEC strains (13 eaeA-positive and 16 eaeA-negative) and 69 matched controls were interviewed. In a conditional logistic regression analysis, consumption of fish appeared to be a risk factor for infection (adjusted odds ratio (OR) 3.

Background: We report a case of progressive enophthalmos, maxillary sinus hypoplasia and radiological signs of sinusitis in a young woman.

Case Report: The patient had no history of sinus surgery or facial trauma. There were no signs of sinusitis.

In our 15-bed neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), four new-borns were found to be colonized or infected with Pseudomonas aeruginosa within a period of one week. To identify the outbreak source, three independent studies were performed: epidemiological investigation, environmental surveillance and genotypic typing of isolates. Although epidemiological investigation by a case-control study revealed no conclusive results, the transfusion of fresh frozen plasma (FFP) and human albumin (HA) appeared to be the factor with highest risk.

Background: Patients considered for arterial surgery, have been shown to have a high incidence of coexistent cardiac, vascular and other diseases, affecting operative risk and survival. We developed a systematic workup strategy for detecting these coexistent diseases in our vascular surgical patients, mainly based on non-invasive diagnostic techniques.

Methods: We evaluated 200 consecutive patients, admitted to the department of vascular surgery in an academic teaching hospital, in order to establish the total incidence of relevant concomitant disorders, the extent to which this screening yielded previously unknown diagnostic information, and the impact on short-term (one year) survival.

Objectives: To optimize the interpretation of GC-MS toxicological screenings (i.e., to facilitate ion specific queries, create custom reports specifically adapted to each confirmation procedure, and eliminate redundant and/or inaccurate data on library search reports).

1. It has been suggested that an ideal antiparkinsonian treatment requires stimulation of both D1 and D2 dopamine receptors. Bromocriptine and lisuride are regarded as pure D2 receptor agonists, whereas pergolide and apomorphine are thought to stimulate both D1 and D2 receptors.

Objectives: To determine the outcome of pelvic floor muscle exercises for genuine stress incontinence after 5 years.

Methods: Questionnaires were sent to 48 women, mean age 57 years, with troublesome stress incontinence treated as outpatients by a skilled female physiotherapist to elucidate a self-assessment of therapy outcome and to determine patients' compliance concerning fulfillment of home exercises and attitude toward physiotherapy. Patients' self-assessment responses indicated cured, much improved, some improvement, or unchanged/worse and incidence of anti-incontinence surgery after physiotherapy.

Malakit Helicobacter pylori (Biolab, Limal, Belgium) is a second-generation enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for the detection of Helicobacter pylori infection. We evaluated its ability to diagnose H. pylori infection in 489 asymptomatic pregnant women, 427 asymptomatic children, and 95 symptomatic children.

Dopamine receptors in the human brain play an important role in the pathophysiology and treatment of psychosis and movement disorders. Pharmacological and biochemical studies, and more recently gene cloning techniques, have demonstrated that there are multiple receptors for dopamine in the brain. There is confusion in the literature as new subtypes (D3, D4 and D5 receptors) were classified according to unspecified criteria.

Serology, 13C-urea breath test, histology, Campylobacter-like organism testing, and culture were performed in 95 consecutive children to evaluate the contribution of these tests to the detection of Helicobacter pylori infection. In analyses considering any combination of three positive tests as "gold standard" for diagnosing H pylori infection, 26 children were Helicobacter positive (27%), which is only one patient more than the number of children with only a positive culture. The accuracy of culture was excellent when "any combination of three positive tests" was used as the gold standard (sensitivity 96%, specificity 100%, positive predictive value 100% [false positivity 0%], negative predictive value 99% [false-negative results 1%]).

Formation of free radicals and subsequent lipid peroxidation may have an important role in tissue injury and neuronal cell death after cerebral ischaemia. We conducted a prospective, controlled study to determine whether the endogenous antioxidant vitamins A and E had a protective function in acute ischaemic stroke. The study population consisted of 80 patients seen at the Free University Hospital in Brussels.

The incidence of atopic manifestations was analyzed in infants "at risk" because of histories of atopy in first degree relatives. The incidence of atopic manifestations was significantly reduced (P = .0011) during the first 6 months of life when only the whey hydrolysate was administered (2/32 infants, 6.

To evaluate the existence of a circadian rhythm in cardiac responses to vagal stimulation tests, 10 children without neurologic or cardiopulmonary disease, were studied using a standardized procedure. A trigeminal airstream stimulation test (TAS) and an ocular compression test (OCT) were subsequently performed at 4 nonequidistant hours. These 2 vagal stimulation tests were performed according to well-established, previously published techniques.

The anesthetic risk of tobacco smoking.

Acta Anaesthesiol Belg

August 1991

Department of Anesthesiology, Academisch Ziekenhuis Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Belgium.

Tobacco smoking is one of the many factors that predispose to postoperative complications. Although smoking affects multiple organs (heart, lungs, blood, immune and nervous systems), the most prominent perioperative morbidity is of pulmonary origin. This article reviews the major effects of tobacco smoke constituents on organ functions and the management principles applying to anesthesia of smokers.

In a patient with hypokalemic periodic paralysis (HPP), recovery from a paralytic attack, coinciding with the restoration of plasma potassium, was associated with a rise in serum myoglobin (Mb) and creatine kinase (CK). The increase of muscle proteins in serum was preceded by an increase in serum free fatty acids (FFA). An increased permeability of the sarcolemma, caused by an accumulation of FFA within the muscle cell, might underly the reflux of potassium into the circulation.
