Background: Clinician-based reporting of adverse events leads to underreporting and underestimation of the impact of adverse events on prostate cancer patients. Therefore, interest has grown in capturing adverse events directly from patients using the Patient-Reported Outcomes (PROs) version of the Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events (CTCAE). We aimed to develop a standardized PRO-CTCAE subset tailored to adverse event monitoring in prostate cancer patients.

Introduction: Surgical treatment of patients with malformations of the female genital tract is a complex problem and there are different techniques described in the literature. The goal of all these techniques is the reconstruction of a neovagina that is anatomically similar to a vagina, with adequate length to facilitate sexual functioning and with the lowest risk of possible complications. The aim of this study is to describe the surgical technique for the reconstruction of a neovagina from an ileal segment without a vascular pedicle.

Geometrical characteristics of the symptomatic and non-symptomatic ossa trigona.

Foot Ankle Surg

August 2021

Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Amsterdam University Medical Centers, University of Amsterdam, Amsterdam Movement Sciences, Amsterdam, The Netherlands; Academic Center for Evidence-Based Sports Medicine (ACES), Amsterdam, The Netherlands; Amsterdam Collaboration on Health & Safety in Sports (ACHSS), AMC/VUmc IOC Research Center, Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

Background: Posterior ankle impingement is strongly associated with the presence of an os trigonum, however, most patients with an os trigonum will never develop symptoms. It is hypothesized that the os trigonum is larger in the symptomatic ankle than in the non-symptomatic ankle, the distance between os trigonum and tibia is smaller and there are more degenerative changes in ankles with symptoms of posterior impingement. In this study the geometrical characteristics of the ipsilateral and contralateral os trigonum are compared in patients with a bilateral os trigonum and unilateral posterior impingement symptoms.

Self-Reported Sexual Function in Sexually Active Male Hodgkin Lymphoma Survivors.

Sex Med

September 2020

Department of Hematology, Cancer Center Amsterdam, Amsterdam University Medical Center, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

Introduction: Unambiguous data on sexual dysfunction after Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) treatment are scarce.

Aims: To form a baseline in this area, we compared patient-reported sexual function in sexually active male HL survivors in complete remission with a sexually active, age-matched, male Dutch sample population. Furthermore, we explored whether sociodemographic and clinical factors were associated with sexual dysfunction in HL survivors and investigated whether reporting to perceive sexual problems was indicative for sexual dysfunction.

Background: Evidence suggests that low birth weight and fetal exposure to extreme maternal undernutrition is associated with cardiovascular disease in adulthood. Hyperemesis gravidarum, a clinical entity characterized by severe nausea and excess vomiting leading to a suboptimal maternal nutritional status during early pregnancy, is associated with an increased risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes. Several studies also showed that different measures related to hyperemesis gravidarum, such as maternal daily vomiting or severe weight loss, are associated with increased risks of adverse fetal pregnancy outcomes.

Background: In Fontan patients with atrial arrhythmias (AA), non-vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants(NOACs) have a class III recommendation according to the Pediatric & Congenital Electrophysiology Society (PACES)/Heart Rhythm Society (HRS) guideline in 2014, due to lack of data on outcomes as opposed to evidence of harm. To address this gap in data, we investigated the safety and efficacy of NOACs in adults with a Fontan circulation in a worldwide study.

Methods: This is an international multicentre prospective cohort study, using data from the NOTE (on-vitamin K antagonist ral anticoagulants for hrombombolic prevention in patients with congenital heart disease) registry.

The population of patients with congenital heart disease (CHD) is continuously increasing with more and more patients reaching adulthood. A significant portion of these young adults will suffer from arrhythmias due to the underlying congenital heart defect itself or as a sequela of interventional or surgical treatment. The medical community will encounter an increasing challenge as even most of the individuals with complex congenital heart defects nowadays become young adults.

Burn injury has severe impact on the physiologic homeostasis. Platelet counts show a distinct course post-burn injury, with a nadir at day 3 followed by a thrombocytotic period with at peak at day 15, with a gradual return to normal. So far, it is unknown how the functionality and activational status of platelets develop post burn.

Introduction: There is currently little evidence for the optimal dosing strategy of four-factor prothrombin complex concentrates (PCC) in vitamin K antagonist (VKA)-related bleeds. The generally accepted dosing strategy is the use of a variable dose calculated using patient-specific characteristics as per manufacturer's instruction. However, evidence exists that the use of a fixed low dose of 1000 international units of factor IX (IU fIX) might also suffice.

Article Synopsis
  • A EULAR-taskforce developed a definition for arthralgia that indicates a higher likelihood of evolving into rheumatoid arthritis (RA), aimed at creating consistent patient groups for clinical studies.
  • This study validated the definition in 241 patients identified as having clinically suspect arthralgia (CSA) and assessed its performance in another group of 113 referred patients.
  • Results indicated that the definition is effective when used by rheumatologists, but much less so without their evaluation, suggesting that clinical assessment should be paired with biomarkers for better diagnostic accuracy.
