Introduction: Prehabilitation before colorectal cancer (CRC) surgery is promising to prevent complications and to enhance recovery, especially in patients aged 70 or older or in patients with an American Society of Anaesthesiologist (ASA) physical classification score 3-4, for whom surgery is associated with higher postoperative complications and long-lasting adverse effects on functional performance.

Materials And Methods: A cohort study was conducted in a large teaching hospital in Alkmaar, the Netherlands. Fifty CRC patients (≥70 years or ASA 3-4) underwent multimodal prehabilitation between September 2020 and July 2021.

Despite the risk of complications, high dose radiation therapy is increasingly utilized in the management of selected bone malignancies. In this study, we investigate the impact of moderate to high dose radiation (over 50 Gy) on bone metabolism and structure. Between 2015 and 2018, patients with a primary malignant bone tumor of the sacrum that were either treated with high dose definitive radiation only or a combination of moderate to high dose radiation and surgery were prospectively enrolled at a single institution.

In β-hemoglobinopathies, reactivation of gamma- at the expense of beta-globin is a prominent therapeutic option. Expression of the globin genes is not strictly intrinsically regulated during erythropoiesis, supported by the observation that fetal erythroid cells switch to adult hemoglobin expression when injected in mice. We show cultured erythroblasts are a mix of HbA restrictive and HbA/HbF expressing cells and that the proportion of cells in the latter population depends on the starting material.

Does Artificial Intelligence Outperform Natural Intelligence in Interpreting Musculoskeletal Radiological Studies? A Systematic Review.

Background: Machine learning (ML) is a subdomain of artificial intelligence that enables computers to abstract patterns from data without explicit programming. A myriad of impactful ML applications already exists in orthopaedics ranging from predicting infections after surgery to diagnostic imaging. However, no systematic reviews that we know of have compared, in particular, the performance of ML models with that of clinicians in musculoskeletal imaging to provide an up-to-date summary regarding the extent of applying ML to imaging diagnoses.

Characterization of EEG-based functional brain networks in myotonic dystrophy type 1.

Objective: In the autosomal dominant, multisystem, chronic progressive disease myotonic dystrophy type 1 (DM1), cognitive deficits may originate from disrupted functional brain networks. We aimed to use network analysis of resting-state electro-encephalography (EEG) recordings of patients with DM1 and matched unaffected controls to investigate changes in network organization in large-scale functional brain networks and correlations with cognitive deficits.

Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 28 adult patients with genetically confirmed DM1 and 26 age-, sex- and education-matched unaffected controls underwent resting-state EEG and neuropsychological assessment.

Objectives: Patient access to the voice prosthesis and heat and moisture exchanger (HME) is not always guaranteed in Europe. Therefore, the aim of this qualitative study is to evaluate factors influencing physician's prescription and reimbursement of these devices in eight European countries, and to identify barriers of and facilitators to effective patient access.

Materials And Methods: In this mixed methods study, we conducted a survey among stakeholders evaluating prescription (Part 1 of the survey), reimbursement (Part 2), and barriers of and facilitators to effective patient access (Part 3).

Prehospital antibiotics in the ambulance for sepsis: a multicentre, open label, randomised trial.

Background: Emergency medical services (EMS) personnel have already made substantial contributions to improving care for patients with time-dependent illnesses, such as trauma and myocardial infarction. Patients with sepsis could also benefit from timely prehospital care.

Methods: After training EMS personnel in recognising sepsis, we did a randomised controlled open-label trial in ten large regional ambulance services serving 34 secondary and tertiary care hospitals in the Netherlands.

European consensus conference on faecal microbiota transplantation in clinical practice.

Faecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) is an important therapeutic option for infection. Promising findings suggest that FMT may play a role also in the management of other disorders associated with the alteration of gut microbiota. Although the health community is assessing FMT with renewed interest and patients are becoming more aware, there are technical and logistical issues in establishing such a non-standardised treatment into the clinical practice with safety and proper governance.
