Background: Timely outpatient follow-up and readmission after discharge are common quality indicators in psychiatric care, but their association varies in previous research. We aimed to examine whether the impact of outpatient follow-up and other factors on readmission risk evolves over time in people with non-affective psychotic disorder (NAP).

Methods: The Finnish Quality of Care Register includes all people diagnosed with NAP since January 2010.

Article Synopsis
  • Thyroid cancer is more prevalent in women, particularly those of reproductive age, and a study examined potential links between hormone levels and the risk of developing papillary thyroid cancer during pregnancy.
  • The research involved 605 women diagnosed with papillary thyroid cancer and 1,185 matched controls, analyzing various thyroid and hormone markers from early-pregnancy blood samples.
  • Findings revealed that higher levels of thyroid peroxidase (TPO-Ab) and thyroglobulin antibodies (Tg-Ab) significantly correlated with increased odds of papillary thyroid cancer, while no significant links were found with other hormone levels, suggesting that thyroid autoimmunity in early pregnancy may elevate cancer risk.

To investigate whether the youth with prenatal substance exposure (PSE) (aged 15-24 years,  = 615) had been in hospital care more often due to injuries and poisoning in comparison with unexposed matched controls ( = 1787). Data from medical records (exposure) and national health and social welfare registers (outcome and confounders) were combined and youths were monitored from birth until either outpatient or inpatient hospital care for injury or poisoning, death or the end of the study period (December 2016). Cox regression models were used in the analyses accounting for associated child and maternal risk factors.

Objective: Mobile health (mHealth) services suffer from high attrition rates yet represent a viable strategy for adults to improve their health. There is a need to develop evidence-based mHealth services and to constantly evaluate their feasibility. This study explored the acceptability, usability, engagement and optimisation of a co-developed mHealth service, aiming to promote healthy lifestyle behaviours.

Aims/hypothesis: Children and adults born preterm have an increased risk of type 1 diabetes. However, there is limited information on risk patterns across the full range of gestational ages, especially after extremely preterm birth (23-27 weeks of gestation). We investigated the risk of type 1 diabetes in childhood and young adulthood across the full range of length of gestation at birth.

Sarcoidosis in first- and second-generation immigrants: a cohort study of all adults 18 years of age and older in Sweden.

Int Health

January 2025

Center for Primary Health Care Research, Department of Clinical Sciences, Malmö 205 02, Lund University, Malmö, Sweden.

Background: There is a lack of studies on sarcoidosis among immigrants, which is of interest as there may be genetic and environmental characteristics affecting immigrants from certain countries. We aimed to study hazard ratios (HRs) of sarcoidosis in first- and second-generation immigrants, comparing them with native Swedes in the total adult Swedish population.

Methods: We conducted a nationwide study of individuals ≥18 y of age.

Previous studies report an association between maternal diabetes mellitus (MDM) and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), often overlooking unmeasured confounders such as shared genetics and environmental factors. We therefore conducted a multinational cohort study with linked mother-child pairs data in Hong Kong, New Zealand, Taiwan, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden to evaluate associations between different MDM (any MDM, gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and pregestational diabetes mellitus (PGDM)) and ADHD using Cox proportional hazards regression. We included over 3.

Background: Older adults with home care (HC) often have complex disease patterns and use healthcare extensively. Increased understanding is necessary to tailor their care. To our knowledge, this is the first study to describe patterns of morbidity and hospitalizations among community-dwelling older HC recipients nationwide and in subgroups defined by age, sex, and amount of HC, and to compare patterns to community-dwelling older adults without HC.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines the use of intravenous thrombolysis (IVT) and endovascular thrombectomy for treating ischemic strokes in pregnant women, highlighting a lack of previous research in this area.
  • Data was collected from national registers in Finland over nearly three decades, comparing the outcomes of 12 IVT-treated maternal stroke patients to a control group of young females with non-pregnancy-related strokes.
  • Results indicate that while IVT-treated patients showed significant neurological improvement, their overall functional outcomes were less favorable compared to controls, suggesting that maternal strokes should not be dismissed from potential recanalization therapies.

Objectives: Lichen sclerosus (LS) is an inflammatory skin disease probably arising from an interplay of genetics, local irritation, and autoimmune processes. We identified potential risk factors for the disease using data from nationwide Finnish registries.

Methods: We identified all women diagnosed with LS within specialized health care during 1998-2016 (n = 10,692) and selected 3 age-matched population control women for each case.

Background: The short- and long-term consequences of restricted fetal growth cause considerable concern, and how prenatal exposure to different antiseizure medications (ASMs) affects fetal growth remains uncertain.

Methods: This was a population-based cohort study of liveborn singleton children born in Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden from 1996 to 2017. Prenatal exposure was defined as maternal filling of prescriptions for ASM during pregnancy registered in national prescription registries and primary outcomes were adjusted odds ratios (aORs) of microcephaly or being born small for gestational age.

The total burden of infections after transplantation has not been compared in detail between recipients of simultaneous pancreas-kidney transplantation (SPK) and kidney transplantation alone (KTA). We compared infection-related hospitalizations and bacteremias after transplantation during 1- and 5-year follow-up among 162 patients undergoing SPK. The control group consisted of 153 type 1 diabetics undergoing KTA with the inclusion criteria of donor and recipient age < 60, and BMI < 30.
