CAD/CAM-manufactured implants are increasingly becoming the standard in current therapy. The question of whether the manufacturing-related rougher surface of selective laser fusion plates compared to milled, smoother reconstruction plates leads to increased postoperative complications such as infections, plate exposure, and fistulas has not yet been determined. A retrospective analysis of 98 patients who underwent surgical treatment with either a selective laser fusion plate or a milled reconstruction plate at our hospital was performed.

Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) has been an integral part of the maxillofacial patient population for some time. The therapeutic concept ranges from conservative approaches over less extended decortications to major jaw resections, which can result in a considerable loss of quality of life. Based on three case reports, this paper presents the long-term history of patients with MRONJ of the mandible, whose disease ultimately resulted in partial or total mandibular resection and subsequent multisegmental reconstruction using a microvascular anastomosed bone flap.

Background: We report the world's first developer-independent experience with robot-assisted laser Le Fort I osteotomy (LLFO) and drill-hole marking in orthognathic surgery. To overcome the geometric limitations of conventional rotating and piezosurgical instruments for performing osteotomies, we used the stand-alone robot-assisted laser system developed by Advanced Osteotomy Tools. The aim here was to evaluate the precision of this novel procedure in comparison to the standard procedure used in our clinic using a computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) cutting guide and patient-specific implant.

The association between uterine smooth muscle fibroids and systemic arterial hypertension is poorly understood. Therefore, we explored possible concomitant myocyte pathology of systemic resistance-sized arterioles (200 to 400 μm), isolated from omental samples donated by 19 women (mean age 42 y; SE 1) undergoing fibroid surgery. Vessels of 17 women (8 hypertensives) were available for transmission electron microscopy.

Mineralocorticoid-receptor (MR) dysfunction as expressed by low systolic blood pressure and a high salivary aldosterone/cortisol ratio predicts less favorable antidepressant treatment outcome. Inhibition of peripheral 11-beta-hydroxysteroid-dehydrogenase type 2 (11betaHSD2) reverses these markers. We therefore tested the hypothesis that the 11betaHSD2 inhibitor glycyrrhizin affects treatment outcome via this mechanism.

Introduction: The development of a clinical guideline is a challenging process. National and international organizations have established a variety of approaches, grading systems, evaluation scales, and voting modes; however, a practical description which illustrates all steps from starting the initiative to publication and dissemination of the guideline is usually not provided. We describe a structured guideline procedure that can be adjusted to the requirements of other multinational guidelines.

Objectives: Interpersonal dysfunction is a central feature of borderline personality disorder (BPD), and the neuropeptide oxytocin (OT) has been shown to impact patients' behaviour in numerous ways. Nonverbal signals such as the coordination of body movement (nonverbal synchrony) are associated with the success of interpersonal exchanges and could thus be influenced by features of BPD and by the administration of OT.
Design: We explored the effect of intranasal OT (inOT) on nonverbal synchrony in sixteen patients with BPD and fifteen healthy controls (CTL) randomly assigned to two double-blind clinical interviews under inOT and placebo (PL).

This report presents the rationale and design of a multi-center clinical trial that examines the efficacy and safety of antipsychotic combination treatment in acutely ill schizophrenia patients compared to antipsychotic monotherapy. Antipsychotic combination treatment is common in clinical practice worldwide, despite clinical guidelines generally not recommending such practice due to lacking evidence for its efficacy and safety. Olanzapine has a related chemical structure and comparable receptor-binding profile as clozapine, which demonstrated superior efficacy in combination studies, but has a more unfavorable side-effect profile compared to olanzapine.
