Unequal smiles: consequences of untreated dental caries in citizens living in vulnerable circumstances in the Netherlands: an exploratory pilot study.

The often poor oral health status of socioeconomically vulnerable adults is widely recognised. Nevertheless, research on it is scarce. To address this gap, this exploratory pilot study aimed to report on the prevalence of untreated caries and its clinical odontogenic consequences, as well as the associated Oral Health Related Quality of Life (OHRQoL) in a marginalised adult Dutch population.

Improved ground truth annotation by multimodal image registration from 3D ultrasound to histopathology for resected tongue carcinoma.

Objectives: This study's objectives are (1) to investigate the registration accuracy from intraoperative ultrasound (US) to histopathological images, (2) to assess the agreement and correlation between measurements in registered 3D US and histopathology, and (3) to train a nnUNet model for automatic segmentation of 3D US volumes of resected tongue specimens.

Methods: Ten 3D US volumes were acquired, including the corresponding digitalized histopathological images (n = 29). Based on corresponding landmarks, the registrations between 3D US and histopathology images were calculated and evaluated using the target registration error (TRE).

Relationship between sleep bruxism and obstructive sleep apnoea: A population-based survey.

Objective: Sleep bruxism (SB) and obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) seem to be mutually associated. This study investigates the relationship between current SB and OSA-related symptoms and the difference in OSA-related symptoms between groups based on a history of SB.

Methods: An online survey was drafted to report the presence of SB and OSA in sample of 243 individuals (M = 129;F = 114;mean(SD)age = 42.

Purpose: Intra-operative assessment of resection margins during oncological surgery is a field that needs improvement. Ultrasound (US) shows the potential to fulfill this need, but this imaging technique is highly operator-dependent. A 3D US image of the whole specimen may remedy the operator dependence.

Background: Reconstruction of the auricle is challenging to surgeons as a result of its complex anatomy. Defects including the conchal bowl and the external auditory canal (EAC) do not accept imperfection as functional consequences may add to aesthetic ones. Local flaps that are relying mainly on posteriorly based auricle flaps do not represent ideal solutions.

Triclabendazole Induces Pyroptosis by Activating Caspase-3 to Cleave GSDME in Breast Cancer Cells.

Pyroptosis is a form of programmed cell death, in which gasdermin E (GSDME) plays an important role in cancer cells, which can be induced by activated caspase-3 on apoptotic stimulation. Triclabendazole is a new type of imidazole in fluke resistance and has been approved by the FDA for the treatment of fascioliasis and its functions partially acting through apoptosis-related mechanisms. However, it remains unclear whether triclabendazole has obvious anti-cancer effects on breast cancer cells.

Oral function and its association with nutrition and quality of life in nursing home residents with and without dementia: A cross-sectional study.

Background: Oral health problems increase with age, and are common in nursing home residents, especially in those with dementia. These problems can lead to tooth loss, diminished oral function and malnutrition.

Objectives: To compare oral function, nutritional status and quality of life (QoL) between residents with and without dementia, and to examine associations between these variables.

Vitamin D in the development and progression of alzheimer's disease: implications for clinical management.

Introduction: Although the pathophysiological bases of Alzheimer's disease (AD) remain incompletely understood and disease-modifying therapies are not available, intervention on modifiable risk factors is warranted. Research on nutrition and dietary components is challenging and controversies still persist about the role of micro- and macronutrients and health outcomes in dementia. Importantly, results of preclinical investigations have shown that vitamin D triggers different neural pathways that may be protective against these neurodegenerative mechanisms, including the deposition of amyloid plaques, inflammatory processes, neurofibrillary degeneration, glutamatergic excitotoxicity, excessive intraneuronal calcium influx, and oxidative stress, although its relationship with AD still needs to be fully understood.

Aim: This study explores the association between Coronary Artery Calcium (CAC) scores and dental pathology such as missing teeth, the (peri-apical) health status and restoration grade of the teeth, and the grade of alveolar bone loss seen on a dental panoramic radiograph (Orthopantomograph-OPG).

Materials And Methods: In this retrospective cross-sectional study, data was collected from three hospitals spread in the Netherlands. Patients were included when a CAC score and an OPG were available, both recorded within a maximum period of 365 days from 2009-2017.

The relationship between epigenetics and microbiota in neuropsychiatric diseases.

Microbiota might be considered as a pool for environmental epigenetic factors. Evidence is accumulating that environmental exposures - including microbes, diet, drugs - play a role in the pathogenesis of many neuropsychiatric disorders. Underlying mechanisms are complex, involving the sensitive interplay of genetics with epigenetics, neuroinflammation and the innate immune system.

Anti-amyloid-β protein agents for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease: an update on emerging drugs.

Introduction: Currently available Alzheimer's disease (AD) therapeutics are only symptomatic, targeting cholinergic and glutamatergic neurotransmissions. Several putative disease-modifying drugs in late-stage clinical development target amyloid-β (Aβ) peptide and tau protein, the principal neurophatological hallmarks of the disease.
