The aims of this study were to investigate the relationship between self-reported preventive and curative orientations of general dental practitioners (GDPs) and the oral healthcare services (OHS) they provided to patients under 18-years-old. And in addition, to determine which patient, GDP, and dental practice characteristics predicted the provision of preventive and curative care. GDPs in the Netherlands using dental software program Exquise (>2,000) were invited to participate in this study voluntarily.

Exploring the Role of Practice Managers in Dutch Oral Healthcare Practices.

Int Dent J

February 2025

Department of Oral Public Health (OPH), Academic Centre for Dentistry Amsterdam (ACTA), University of Amsterdam and Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, Amsterdam, The Netherlands; KNMT, Royal Dutch Dental Association, Utrecht, The Netherlands.

Introduction And Aims: The practice manager (PM) is a familiar position in Dutch oral healthcare. However, little is known about in which type of practice they work and what their responsibilities are. The aims of this study were to analyse the characteristics of oral healthcare practices that employ a PM and practices that do not, to determine responsibility for tasks described in the PM function description, and to assess to what extent the role of a PM varies between those with an oral healthcare and another background, and across practices with different characteristics.

Osteogenic differentiation of periodontal ligament fibroblasts inhibits osteoclast formation.

Eur J Cell Biol

September 2024

Department of Periodontology, Academic Centre for Dentistry Amsterdam (ACTA), University of Amsterdam and Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Electronic address:

One of the deficits of knowledge on bone remodelling, is to what extent cells that are driven towards osteogenic differentiation can contribute to osteoclast formation. The periodontal ligament fibroblast (PdLFs) is an ideal model to study this, since they play a role in osteogenesis, and can also orchestrate osteoclastogenesis.when co-cultured with a source of osteoclast-precursor such as peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs).

A growing body of research suggested that there was a link between poor periodontal health and systemic diseases, particularly with the early development of cognitive disorders, dementia, and depression. This is especially true in cases of changes in diet, malnutrition, loss of muscular endurance, and abnormal systemic inflammatory response. Our study aimed to determine the extent of these associations to better target the multi-level healthy aging challenge investigating the impact of periodontal disease on cognitive disorders (cognitive impairment and cognitive decline), dementia, and depression.

Background: Mucositis is a common and highly impactful side effect of conventional and emerging cancer therapy and thus the subject of intense investigation. Although common practice, mucositis assessment is heterogeneously adopted and poorly guided, impacting evidence synthesis and translation. The Multinational Association of Supportive Care in Cancer (MASCC) Mucositis Study Group (MSG) therefore aimed to establish expert recommendations for how existing mucositis assessment tools should be used, in clinical care and trials contexts, to improve the consistency of mucositis assessment.

To evaluate the effect of acidic challenge on erosion depth and topographic characteristics of different materials used as occlusal sealants. Two hundred specimens of five sealant materials (Fuji IX, Ketac Molar, Fuji II, Equia and Clinpro) and forty bovine teeth enamel samples (control) were prepared and exposed to acidic challenge. The specimens were immersed in four different solutions (orange juice, coke drink, citric acid or distilled water) under mildly shaken conditions for 3 days.

Introduction: Although the maxillary nerve block (MNB) provides adequate pain relief in cleft palate surgery, it is not routinely used globally, and reported techniques are heterogeneous. This study aims to describe relevant anatomy and to present the preferred technique of MNB administration based on the current literature and the expert opinion of the authors.

Method And Materials: First, a survey was sent to 432 registrants of the International Cleft Palate Master Course Amsterdam 2023.

Objective: To investigate if there are dose-response relationships between self-reported waking-state oral behaviours, including awake bruxism, and three indicators of psychological distress (depression, anxiety, stress).

Methods: The study sample consisted of 1,886 patients with function-dependent TMD pain. Relationships between six non-functional and six functional waking-state oral behaviours, scored on a 5-point ordinal scale, and the psychological factors were investigated using ordinal logistic regression.

Impressive advances have been made to replicate human physiology over the last few years due to the growth of the organ-on-chip (OoC) field in both industrial and academic settings. OoCs are a type of microphysiological system (MPS) that imitates functional and dynamic aspects of native human organ biology on a microfluidic device. Organoids and organotypic models, ranging in their complexity from simple single-cell to complex multi-cell type constructs, are being incorporated into OoC microfluidic devices to better mimic human physiology.

Background: The survival of ART restorations can be influenced by the choice of the restorative material. The aim of this randomized non-inferiority controlled trial was to compare the 2-year survival rate and cost analysis of two encapsulated glass ionomer cements (GIC) as occlusoproximal restorative materials in primary molars.

Methods: Children from public schools in Tietê (Brazil), aged 4-8 years with occlusoproximal dentine carious lesions in primary molars were selected and randomly assigned to receive either Equia Forte (EF) or Riva Self Cure (RSC) as restorative materials.

Despite the availability of various treatment approaches for patients with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), some patients do not respond to these therapies, and novel treatment approaches are needed. This study investigated the efficacy of mifepristone, a glucocorticoid receptor antagonist, in treatment-resistant PTSD patients. Three patients with PTSD who were resistant to standard psychological and pharmacological treatments were prescribed mifepristone (600-1,200 mg/day) for 1 week.

  • The study investigates how the ferrule effect and different types of dental posts affect stress distribution in three styles of maxillary central incisors: Fat, Medium, and Slim.
  • Nine models were created to simulate each tooth type with different post materials (metallic and fiber) and ferrule heights (none, 1 mm, and 2 mm).
  • Results showed that Slim incisors had the highest stress levels, especially when using metallic posts, highlighting the need for tailored dental treatments based on individual tooth morphology.

Article Synopsis
  • Recent efforts to find effective Alzheimer's Disease (AD) treatments targeting amyloid-β (Aβ), tau protein, and neuroinflammation have largely failed, particularly with anti-Aβ monoclonal antibodies like solanezumab.
  • The text reviews the failures of solanezumab in clinical trials, including its pharmacokinetics and impacts on cognitive functions, highlighting disappointing outcomes like accelerated cognitive decline.
  • The failure of solanezumab raises critical questions about the Aβ cascade hypothesis of AD, suggesting that targeting Aβ alone may not be sufficient for treatment.
