EVALUATION OF IMPACT OF OPHTHALMOLOGY ROTATION ON FAMILY MEDICINE PRACTICE IN NORTHERN NIGERIA: A MULTICENTER STUDY.

Introduction: Globally, 36 million people are blind and 217 million people have moderate or severe distance vision impairment. Eighty-nine percent of vision-impaired people live in low and middle-income countries. To prevent progression to blindness, there is a need for early diagnosis and referral for treatment.

PREDICTORS OF OVERWEIGHT AND OBESITY AMONG ADOLESCENTS ATTENDING SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN BAUCHI METROPOLIS, NORTHEAST NIGERIA.

Introduction: Overweight and obesity are important risk factors for cardiovascular disease. The prevalence of both has continued to rise not only among adults but also among adolescents at an alarming rate worldwide. Adolescent overweight and obesity are becoming challenging, yet under-recognised problems in many developing countries like Nigeria.

ASSESSMENT OF THE EFFECT FAMILY FUNCTIONING ON NUTRITIONAL STATUS OF UNDER-FIVE CHILDREN IN A TEACHING HOSPITAL IN BAUCHI NORTH-EAST NIGERIA.

Introduction: Malnutrition is a major public health problem in developing countries including Nigeria. Assessment of the nutritional status of children and the effect of family functioning on it will improve understanding of the magnitude of the problem and aid planning of appropriate interventions that will improve child health and development.

Objective: The goal of this study is to assess the effect of family functioning on the nutritional status of under-five children attending ATBUTH, Bauchi.

KNOWLEDGE ON THE USE OF BIOSIMILARS IN HAEMATOLOGICAL MALIGNANCIES AMONGST HEALTHCARE WORKERS AT A TERTIARY HOSPITAL IN NORTHEAST NIGERIA.

Introduction: Haematological malignancies like other cancers are on the rise. With the improved understanding of the biology of cancers, various biological molecules (biologics and biosimilars) are being discovered and used as supportive and/or specific treatment options. These novel treatments have revolutionized the care of cancer patients and significantly improved survival.

CORRELATION BETWEEN SERUM ALBUMIN LEVEL AND PACKED CELL VOLUME IN NEWLY DIAGNOSED PATIENTS WITH PULMONARY TUBERCULOSIS IN A TERTIARY HOSPITAL IN BAUCHI, NORTH-EASTERN, NIGERIA.

Introduction: Though some studies showed biochemical and haematologic derangements in patients with pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB), but information with regards to the correlation between serum albumin and packed cell volume (PCV) is scarce. The aim of this study was to determine the correlation between serum albumin level and PCV in newly diagnosed patients with PTB at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH), Bauchi, Northeastern Nigeria.

Methodology: This was a cross-sectional study of consecutive newly diagnosed patients with PTB who were Sputum smear-positive as determined by Gene Expert/Rif MTB machine and HIV-negative by 'Determine' test, that were recruited from the medical outpatient department (MOPD) and directly observed treatment short course (DOTS) clinic of ATBUTH, Bauchi.

RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SICKLE CELL NEPHROPATHY AND SOME BIOCHEMICAL MARKERS OF HAEMOLYSIS AMONGST PATIENTS WITH SICKLE CELL ANAEMIA IN KANO, NORTHWESTERN NIGERIA.

Introduction: Advancements in the care of patients with sickle cell anaemia have led to significant improvement in survival with many patients reaching adulthood. As they age, long-term complications of the disease manifest in them, notable amongst which is nephropathy which is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in them. There is limited information about sickle cell nephropathy and some biochemical markers of haemolysis that can detect it early in our setting.

AWARENESS AND PRACTICES TOWARDS PREVENTION OF MOTHER-TO-CHILD TRANSMISSION OF HIV AMONG MARRIED MEN ATTENDING THE ANTIRETROVIRAL CLINIC IN AMINU KANO TEACHING HOSPITAL, KANO, NIGERIA.

Background: The prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) of HIV programme was introduced as a comprehensive package of interventions with the aim of reducing mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) of HIV. The programme offers an opportunity to capture pregnant women and their partners in order to prevent the transmission of HIV to the baby. This study is aimed at assessing the awareness and practices of married HIV-positive male partners towards PMTCT.

SEVEN-YEAR REVIEW OF PAEDIATRIC AND ADOLESCENTS HIV CARE SERVICES AT ABUBAKAR TAFAWA BALEWA UNIVERSITY TEACHING HOSPITAL BAUCHI, NIGERIA.

Introduction: Although the global morbidity and mortality rates associated with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) are decreasing, this improvement is slow in Sub-Saharan Africa. The treatment of HIV in children and adolescents is associated with high failure and mortality. The objectives of this study are to describe HIV treatment regimens and case fatality rates for paediatric and adolescent patients.

Dalbergiella welwitschia (Baker) Baker f. alkaloid-rich extracts attenuate liver damage in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats.

This experiment was conducted to evaluate the Dalbergiella welwitschia alkaloid-rich extracts on liver damage in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. Hence, to induce diabetes, 45 mg/kg body weight of streptozotocin was intraperitoneally injected into the Wistar rats. Subsequently, 5 % (w/v) of glucose water was given to the induced animals for 24 h.

Antibiotic resistance and the COVID-19 pandemic: A dual crisis with complex challenges in LMICs.

Background And Aims: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR), a global health crisis of mounting urgency, has been further complicated by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The intricate relationship between these two phenomena is especially pronounced in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) due to the distinct obstacles encountered by their healthcare systems and policy structures. This study aims to explore the complex challenges arising from the coexistence of these two crises in LMICs and proffer specific recommendations for holistic management.

Burden, socio-demographic and other risk factors associated with haemodialysis in North-west Nigeria: A retrospective multicentre analysis.

Background: Kidney diseases requiring haemodialysis are becoming an emerging public health problem. This study aimed to determine the burden, socio-demographic and other risk factors associated with haemodialysis in Northwest Nigeria.

Methodology: The study was a retrospective multicentre review of secondary data from the dialysis centres of public hospitals in northwestern Nigeria.

Assessment of hypertension service availability in some primary health centres in Nigeria: a mixed-methods study.

Objective: Strengthening primary health centre (PHC) systems is a potentially effective strategy to reduce the burden of non-communicable diseases in Nigeria, a low/middle-income country with limited resources. The aim of this study was to assess hypertension service availability in some PHCs in Nigeria and seek recommendations that could facilitate improved services from PHC workers.

Design: Explanatory sequential mixed-methods study.

Reduction Mammoplasty for Macromastia: Our Experience Using the Inferior Pedicle with Inverted-T Skin Resection.

Introduction: Macromastia is a major reason why women seek for breast reduction especially when there are symptoms. Breast reduction is an uncommon procedure in our environment and this is a report of our experience with inferior pedicle with an inverted-T skin resection.

Materials And Methods: This is a report of breast reductions using the inferior pedicle with an inverted-T skin resection approach that were carried out between 2004 and 2022.

Biochar-based geopolymer nanocomposite for COD and phenol removal from agro-industrial biorefinery wastewater: Kinetic modelling, microbial community, and optimization by response surface methodology.

Agro-industrial biorefinery effluent (AIBW) is considered a highly polluting source responsible for environmental contamination. It contains high loads of chemical oxygen demand (COD), and phenol, with several other organic and inorganic constituents. Thus, an economic treatment approach is required for the sustainable discharge of the effluent.

Glaucoma Treatment Patterns in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Prcis: Physicians were most likely to recommend primary medical therapy upon diagnosis of glaucoma. Laser therapy was underutilized where they were available. Physicians were more likely to recommend surgery in severe glaucoma, laser therapy in mild glaucoma, while recommendation of medical therapy did not depend on glaucoma severity.

Correlation between Red Cell Distribution Width and Glycaemic Control among Adults with Type II Diabetes Mellitus at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, North-Western Nigeria.

Background: Red Blood Cell Distribution Width (RDW) measures the degree of variation in red blood cell size and it is a good predictor of complications in many conditions such as diabetes mellitus (DM). This study aimed to determine the relationship between RDW and glycaemic control in patients with type II DM.

Materials And Methods: It was a cross-sectional comparative study where patients with type II DM and apparently healthy non-DM volunteers were recruited.

Burnout: A predictor of oral health impact profile among Nigerian early career doctors.

There have been reported association of oral health disorders with burnout, stress, and mental health. Arguably, with these reported associations, and the current prevalence of burnout amongst Nigerian doctors, exploring the role of burnout on oral health amongst Nigerian doctors is timely. This study aims to determine the relationship between burnout and oral health-related quality of life amongst Early Career Doctors (ECDs) in Nigeria, while also identifying the role other possible predictors plays in this relationship.

Triple-Band Reconfigurable Monopole Antenna for Long-Range IoT Applications.

In this study, a novel reconfigurable triple-band monopole antenna for LoRa IoT applications is fabricated on an FR-4 substrate. The proposed antenna is designed to function at three distinct LoRa frequency bands: 433 MHz, 868 MHz, and 915 MHz covering the LoRa bands in Europe, America, and Asia. The antenna is reconfigurable by using a PIN diode switching mechanism, which allows for the selection of the desired operating frequency band based on the state of the diodes.

Monolateral external fixation versus internal fixation of Gustilo IIIB open tibial fractures: a multicenter comparative study.

Purpose: Gustilo IIIB open tibial fractures are associated with significant risks of complications particularly nonunion and fracture-related infections (FRI) due to the severity of the injuries. The commonly adopted viewpoint is that a Gustilo IIIB open tibial fracture is a relative contraindication for internal fixation. However, this study aims to assess the veracity of this viewpoint.

A review of research trends on the usage of photocatalysis for wastewater treatment: bibliometric analysis.

Unlabelled: Photocatalysis is seen as a viable alternative to treating water pollution, due to its flexibility, low cost, and ability to use visible light which is a plentiful and free energy source. Hence, determining the topics of interest and widening collaboration networks will go a long way in improving research in this field. In this study, we aimed to analyze the global research trends on the usage of photocatalysis for wastewater treatment using bibliometric analysis, centered on the outputs of publications, co-authorships, countries of affiliation, and author's keyword co-occurrences.

Risk Factors and Pattern of Lower Limb Deep Venous Thrombosis in Gombe, North-Eastern Nigeria.

Background: Deep venous thrombosis (DVT) is one of most common causes of morbidity and mortality among hospitalized patients. Many risk factors ranging from inherited to acquired are associated with increased risk of DVT.

Endoscopic Septoplasty: A Retrospective Analysis of Indications and Outcome.

Background: Endoscopic septoplasty is a minimally invasive surgical procedure for the correction of nasal septal deformity. Globally, nasal septal surgeries are rarely performed, and in our country these procedures are even more scarcely undertaken, partly due to dearth of facilities and to some extent, the expertise of embarking on this specialised surgical procedure. Therefore, we aimed to document the indications and the outcome of endoscopic septoplasty in our environment.
