How did coronavirus disease 2019 affect autonomic balance in young individuals? Analysis by heart rate variability.

Objective: The aim of this study was to demonstrate the effect of coronavirus disease 2019 on the cardiovascular autonomic system using heart rate variability in young individuals.

Methods: The study was designed retrospectively by scanning the 24-h Holter electrocardiography records of patients who applied to the Ankara Abdurrahman Yurtaslan Oncology Education and Research Hospital Cardiology outpatient clinic. The study group consisted of 492 patients under the age of 40 years, who did not have additional comorbidities or medication use and had prolonged symptoms after coronavirus disease 2019 during the pandemic.

Determination of the factors contributing to depression and anxiety in advanced stage lung cancer patients.

Background: The diagnosis of cancer and initiation of treatment disrupt physical, emotional, and socio-economical stability of the patients by reducing the quality of lives and ultimately leading to depression and anxiety. We aimed to observe the indicators for anxiety and depression among lung cancer (LC) patients by comparing with other cancer (OC) patients.

Methods: This study has been conducted between 2017 and 2019.

Tumor Volume Is a Better Prognostic Factor than Greatest Tumor Diameter in Operated Stage I-III Non-Small-Cell Lung Cancer.

Introduction: The aim of this study was to investigate the prognostic impact of tumor volume (TV, recorded from surgical specimens) on patients with stage I-III non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) after complete resection.

Materials And Methods: A total of 129 patients with stage I-III NSCLC diagnosed and underwent curative resection from 2007 to 2014 in our center were included in the study. Their clinico-pathological factors were retrospectively reviewed.

Clinical Profile and Outcomes of Primary Immunodeficiency and Malignancy in Childhood at a Tertiary Oncology Center in Developing Country.

Primary immune deficiencies are a group of heterogenous genetic disorders characterized by frequent infections, autoimmunity and malignancy. In this study, we aimed to evaluate clinical characteristics, outcomes of children with malignancy developed on background of primary immunodeficiency and compare survival rates of patients between malignant lymphoma with primary immunodeficiency and without immunodeficiency from tertiary oncology center in a developing country. A total 23 patients with primary immunodeficiency and malignancy were evaluated retrospectively.

Kindlin-3 and RASSF6 are probable biomarkers for predicting metastasis in cutaneous melanoma.

It is well known that metastasis is the most crucial factor in determining the fate of the patient. The prognosis of melanoma is very poor at the stage of metastasis. Recently, several genes and proteins, including kindlin3, dioxin receptor (AhR), RASSF6, and claudin-11, which were shown as possible prognostic biomarkers for human tumours, were described.

Combination of Venetoclax and hypomethylating agents in relapsed/refractory acute myeloid leukemia: A case series from a single center.

Purpose: Venetoclax (VEN) is an oral selective inhibitor of antiapoptotic protein B-cell leukemia/lymphoma-2 (BCL-2).

Methods: We report 7 relapsed/refractory (R/R) acute myeloid leukemia (AML) patients treated with venetoclax and hypomethylating agents (HMA).

Results: More than half of the patients could go on with venetoclax for only a few months.

Rectocoele and faecal incontinence coexist in most patients. We determined an excellent one-year outcome of simultaneous repair of the former and correction of the latter can be achieved.

Serum magnesium concentration may predict no-reflow phenomenon in primary angioplasty for ST-elevation myocardial infarction.

No-reflow phenomenon is a serious complication of percutaneous coronary intervention. Magnesium may play a role in pathogenesis of no-reflow phenomenon since it interacts with processes like platelet inhibition and endothelial-dependent vasodilatation. Relationship of serum magnesium concentration at admission and angiographic no-reflow phenomenon in ST elevation myocardial infarction patients undergoing primary percutaneous coronary intervention is investigated in the present study.

Evaluation of left and right ventricular functions with three-dimensional speckle tracking in patients with mitral stenosis.

Background: The function of both ventricles has been suggested to be affected in patients with mitral stenosis. In this study, it was aimed to investigate deformation properties of right (RV) and left ventricle (LV) in rheumatic mitral stenosis (MS) patients with three-dimensional speckle tracking echocardiography (3D-STE).

Methods: A total of 60 patients were included in the study (20 patients with mild MS diagnosis, 20 patients with moderate MS diagnosis, and 20 healthy volunteers).

Ameliorating Effects of β-Glucan on Epigastric Artery Island Flap Ischemia-Reperfusion Injury.

Background: Ischemia-reperfusion injury has been one of the culprits of tissue injury and flap loss after island flap transpositions. Thus, significant research has been undertaken to study how to prevent or decrease the spread of ischemia-reperfusion injury. Preventive effects of β-glucan on ischemia-reperfusion injury in the kidney, lung, and small intestine have previously been reported.

Tyrosine kinase inhibitors in the treatment of metastatic renal cell cancer patients with early cytokine intolerance: TURCOS, a Turkish national, prospective observational study.

Objective: Cytokines have been the mainstay of treatment in metastatic renal cell cancer (mRCC) for decades before the introduction of tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs), which dramatically changed the therapeutic landscape in these patients. This observational study was designed to evaluate use of TKIs in the treatment of cytokine-intolerant mRCC patients.

Methods: A total of 151 cytokine-intolerant mRCC patients who were treated with TKIs (sunitinib, pazopanib and sorafenib) were enrolled in this prospective, non-interventional, multi-center observational study at 16 oncology centers across Turkey.

Are there EWSR1 rearranged cutaneous hidradenomas and mucoepidermoid carcinomas of salivary glands? A FISH study and review of the literature.

MAML2 rearrangements have been previously described for hidradenomas and muco-epidermoid carcinomas (MEC). However, one report showed EWSR1 rearrangement in both tumours. In this study, EWSR1 and MAML2 translocation were investigated in hidradenomas and MECs.

Stereotactic body radiotherapy in patients with early-stage non-small cell lung cancer: Does beam-on time matter?

Purpose: Stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) is an effective treatment option for patients with early-stage non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). In this study, we evaluated the treatment results using two different SBRT techniques and the effect of beam-on time (BOT) on treatment outcomes.

Methods: Between July 2007 and January 2018, 142 patients underwent SBRT for primary NSCLC.

Analysis of pre-chemotherapy WBC, PLT, monocyte, hemoglobin, and MPV levels in acute myeloid leukemia patients with WT1, FLT3, or NPM gene mutations.

Effects of mutations on AML (acute myeloid leukemia) patients have been an area of clinical interest. The aim of this study was to analyze pre-chemotherapy WBC (white blood cell), platelet, monocyte, hemoglobin, and mean platelet volume (MPV) levels in acute myeloid leukemia patients with Wilms tumor 1 (WT1), FMS-like tyrosine kinase 3 (FLT3), or nucleophosmin (NPM) gene mutations, attempting to detect and compare possible differences in these values.The study included 71 patients with acute myeloid leukemia known to have WT1, FLT3, or NPM gene mutations.

Value of CHA2DS2-VASc Score for Prediction and Ruling Out of Acute Stent Thrombosis After Primary Percutaneous Coronary Intervention.

Acute stent thrombosis is an important complication of stent implantation. The CHA2DS2-VASc (congestive heart failure, hypertension, age ≥75 years, diabetes mellitus, previous stroke, vascular disease, age between 65 and 74 years, female gender) score incorporates important cardiovascular (CV) risk factors and predicts prognosis in various CV conditions. We evaluated the value of the CHA2DS2-VASc score in predicting acute stent thrombosis (ie, thrombosis during 24 hours after stent placement) in patients undergoing primary percutaneous intervention for ST-segment elevated myocardial infarction.

Evaluation of neutropenia-related outcomes in Hodgkin's lymphoma patients with moderate or severe neutropenia who received ABVD chemotherapy without using granulocyte-colony stimulating factor.

Objective: To evaluate the possible neutropenia-related effects of administering adriamycin [doxorubicin], bleomycin, vinblastin, dacarbazine (ABVD) chemotherapy in Hodgkin's lymphoma patients with moderate or severe neutropenia without granulocyte-colony stimulating factor supplementation.

Methods: This study evaluated neutropenia-related outcomes and the need for granulocyte-colony stimulating factor use during the periods between chemotherapy rounds. Forty-three rounds of ABVD chemotherapy were evaluated in the study.

Patients with COPD who underwent pulmonary rehabilitation in Turkey: prevalence, distribution, and mortality.

Background: Pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) is an effective, evidenced-based treatment. Despite its proven effect, it is still underused. The aim of this study was to present the number of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) who underwent PR, general mortality percentages, the rate of patients prescribed PR by pulmonologists, and the distribution of institutions where PR was performed between 2008 and 2016 in Turkey.

Fetal Cell Microchimerism; Normal and Immunocompromised Gestations in Mice.

To compare fetal cell microchimerism in normal and immunocompromised gestations. The study consists of two groups of mature female mice. In the control group and the immunocompromised study group, 5 mg of saline and cyclosporine were injected intraperitoneally, respectively.

Pralatrexate induced durable response in a relapsed/refractory peripheral T-cell lymphoma patient with a history of autologous stem cell transplantation: Case report of a patient followed-up over 3 years under pralatrexate treatment.

Rationale: Relapsed or refractory peripheral T-cell lymphomas are aggressive diseases. Pralatrexate is an antimetabolite. Hereby, we are reporting a pralatrexate induced durable response in a relapsed/refractory peripheral T-Cell lymphoma patient with a history of autologous stem cell transplantation.

Complementary and integrative health methods used for the treatment of oral mucositis in children with cancer in Turkey.

Purpose: We aimed to determine the complementary and integrative health (CIH) methods used by parents to treat oral mucositis in their children who have cancer.

Design And Methods: In this multicenter, cross-sectional study, data for the study were collected via the demographic form and CIH form for oral mucositis. The data collection tools were filled out by the researchers during the face-to-face interviews.

Test-1 analyzer and conventional Westergren method for erythrocyte sedimentation rate: A comparative study between two laboratories.

Background: Measurement of the length of sedimentation reaction in blood (LSRB), also called erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), is a widely used hematology test. This study intends to compare ESR levels measured by Test-1 method and International Council for Standardization in Hematology's (ICSH) reference method, and analyzes the effect of hematocrit (Hct) on ESR results.

Material And Methods: A total of 755 patients from 2 hospitals were included in the study, and samples with EDTA were studied by Test-1 method for ESR measurement and total blood count, whereas citrated samples were studied with reference Westergren method.

Two Different Cell Populations Is an Important Clue for Diagnosis of Primary Cutaneous Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma: Immunohistochemical Study.

Primary cutaneous adenoid cystic carcinoma (PCACC) is a very rare malignancy. The differential diagnosis of PCACCs in pathology practice can be difficult and a group of primary and metastatic lesions, including adenoid basal cell carcinoma of the skin, should be considered in the differential diagnosis. Besides histomorphological clues, immunohistochemistry studies are very helpful in the differential diagnosis of PCACC.
