Aim: Intramedullary nailing (IMN) is widely accepted as the treatment of choice for tibial fractures, and a suprapatellar method has been described to prevent common problems associated with the typical infrapatellar IMN technique, such as anterior knee pain. However, in the suprapatellar technique, injury to intra-articular structures is a concern. The aim of this study was to compare the clinical and radiological results of suprapatellar and infrapatellar IMN in terms of union, complications, and function.

Background: There are many electrocardiographic (ECG) changes in non-ST segment elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI). However, the diagnostic power is limited in determining the severity of coronary artery disease (CAD) and clinical outcomes.

Objective: This study investigated the role of a risk-based ECG score in predicting the severity of CAD and clinical outcomes in NSTEMI patients.

Isolated proximal and distal interphalangeal joint (DIPJ) dislocations are widely seen as a result of sporting injuries and major trauma. The combination of dorsal dislocation of the DIPJ in the same finger concomitant to traumatic dorsal dislocation of the proximal interphalangeal joint (PIPJ) is a rarely seen injury. The case is, here, presented of a 65-year-old female patient with proximal and DIPJ dislocation of the right-hand ring finger accompanied by volar and dorsal plate injuries in the proximal and distal joints.

The aim of this study was to examine the Intermountain Risk Score (IMRS) for short- and long-term mortality in ST elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) patients and compare it with the well-known risk scores, such as the Thrombolysis in Myocardial Infarction (TIMI) and the Global Registry of Acute Coronary Events (GRACE). In this retrospective and cross-sectional study, 1057 consecutive patients with STEMI were evaluated. The end-points of the study were short- and long-term mortality.

Use of the derived isohemagglutinin parameter to predict patients with COVID-19 in need of an intensive care unit.

Cent Eur J Immunol

March 2022

Department of Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology, Sancaktepe Training and Research Hospital, University of Health Sciences, Istanbul, Turkey.

Predicting which patients will need the intensive care unit (ICU) due to severe COVID-19 is critical in terms of disease treatment. In this study, the use of the derived isohemagglutinin (dIH) parameter calculated from isohemagglutinin (IH) values and neutrophil to lymphocyte ratios for prediction of clinical care (CLC), ICU admission and mortality status was investigated for the morbidity and mortality of COVID-19. The data of approximately 21,500 patients admitted to the hospital with the suspicion of COVID-19 were scanned retrospectively.

Background: In this study, we evaluated 3-month clinical outcomes of kidney transplant recipients (KTR) recovering from COVID-19 and compared them with a control group.

Method: The primary endpoint was death in the third month. Secondary endpoints were ongoing respiratory symptoms, need for home oxygen therapy, rehospitalization for any reason, lower respiratory tract infection, urinary tract infection, biopsy-proven acute rejection, venous/arterial thromboembolic event, cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection/disease and BK viruria/viremia at 3 months.

Background: There are various distal locking options for the repair of tibia distal diametaphyseal fractures with intramedullary nails. There is no consensus about the superiority of any of these distal locking options. In our study, comparing nails with distal bolt locking screw (DSBLS) and conventional nails; we aimed to compare the clinical and radiological results of intramedullary nail models in fixing tibial distal diametaphyseal fractures.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aims to assess how hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) affects the retina and choroid in healthy eyes, measuring central macular thickness and other retinal features.
  • Thirty-five participants, aged 22 to 59, underwent HBOT and had their macular thickness measured before and after the first and twentieth sessions, showing a significant decrease in central macular thickness after treatment.
  • While HBOT resulted in significant thinning of the macula, other retinal measurements showed no notable differences, suggesting HBOT might complement existing treatments for macular edema without adversely affecting other retinal structures.

Purpose In this study, it was aimed to determine the quality and accuracy of the videos on YouTube about lateral epicondylitis. Methods The first 100 videos were included in the study by typing the keyword "lateral epicondylitis" in the YouTube search tab without using any filters. The video power index (VPI) was used to evaluate the popularity of the videos, and the global quality score (GQS), Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), and DISCERN scoring systems were used to evaluate the quality.

The development of methaemoglobinaemia due to prilocaine, which is used for local anaesthesia, is a rare, life-threatening, but well-known side effect. The development of this side-effect in a pregnant patient with chronic kidney disease can lead to foetal distress. The case presented here is of a 21-year old pregnant female with chronic kidney disease who required haemodialysis in the 22nd week of pregnancy due to the progression to end-stage kidney disease.

Introduction: Pregnancy is a process that can cause several physiologic changes to the cardiovascular system such as ventricular hypertrophy and dilation of cardiac chambers. Although there are studies about pregnancy-related changes in echocardiographic examination; there is no data about the long-term effects of parity on these alterations. Therefore, we evaluated the long-term effect of pregnancy on right ventricular (RV) dilation and RV hypertrophy and their relation to the parity number.
