Article Synopsis
  • This study focuses on 17α Hydroxylase/17,20 Lyase Deficiency (17OHD), a rare form of adrenal hyperplasia, highlighting its clinical features such as delayed puberty and hypertension commonly diagnosed in late adolescence.
  • Researchers analyzed data from 97 cases across the country, revealing that hypertension was present in 65% and hypokalemia in 34% of patients, with a significant number requiring antihypertensive treatment.
  • The findings suggest that early diagnosis can be guided by hypertension and hypokalemia, while the final heights of patients generally fall within normal ranges, though the connection between genetic mutations and clinical outcomes remains unclear.

Freezing of Gait (FOG) is a noticeable symptom of Parkinson's disease, like being stuck in place and increasing the risk of falls. The wearable multi-channel sensor system is an efficient method to predict and monitor the FOG, thus warning the wearer to avoid falls and improving the quality of life. However, the existing approaches for the prediction of FOG mainly focus on a single sensor system and cannot handle the interference between multi-channel wearable sensors.

Lead (Pb) is a hazardous metal that poses a significant threat to both the environment and human health. The presence of Pb in food products such as honey can pose a significant risk to human health and is therefore important to detect and monitor. In this study, we propose a voltammetric detection method using molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) electrodes to detect Pb (II) ions in honey.

  • This study aimed to compare childhood-onset schizophrenia (COS) and early-onset schizophrenia (EOS) in terms of clinical characteristics, treatment approaches, and factors influencing prognosis.
  • It involved analyzing data from 31 COS and 66 EOS patients, assessing their symptoms and treatment effectiveness using established scales during both acute and stable phases.
  • Significant differences were found in treatment outcomes and symptom severity between the two groups, with COS patients showing higher comorbidities and requiring more complex treatments, highlighting the need for early diagnosis and specific predictors for better management of schizophrenia.

Background: This study investigates the gap in understanding the dynamics of recurring disease activity (RDA) in RRMS patients after fingolimod (FGL) treatment discontinuation. The aim is to investigate RDA in RRMS patients after stopping FGL, aiming to improve management and comprehension of disease progression post-treatment.

Methods: In this multicenter, retrospective study, data from 172 of 944 RRMS patients aged 18-55, across nine centers in Turkey, who discontinued FGL treatment, were analyzed.

Cytokine expression profiles in children and adolescents with tic disorders.

Sci Rep

July 2024

Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences, Molecular Biology, Genetics and Bioengineering Program, Sabanci University, 34956, Tuzla, Istanbul, Turkey.

The etiology of tic disorders (TDs) is not precisely known, although several lines of evidence suggest involvement of the immune system in pathogenesis. Here, we aimed to determine the expression levels of pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokines in children with TD and compare them with those of healthy controls. Furthermore, we also evaluated their association with clinical variables in the TD group.

Microsc Res Tech

November 2024

Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Faculty of Engineering and Architecture, Kastamonu University, Kastamonu, Turkey.

This study examined the influence of growth temperature and dopant concentration on the properties of Gd- and Ni-doped zinc oxide nanorods (ZnO NRs). ZnO seed layers were deposited on glass substrates using a sol-gel and dip-coating approach. Gd- and Ni-doped ZnO NRs were hydrothermally grown on the seed layers at different temperatures such as 75, 90, and 105°C for a constant growth time of 5 h.

Spatio-temporal characterisation and compensation method based on CNN and LSTM for residential travel data.

PeerJ Comput Sci

May 2024

Faculty of Engineering, Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Bolu Abant Izzet Baysal University, Bolu, Turkey.

Currently, most traffic simulations require residents' travel plans as input data; however, in real scenarios, it is difficult to obtain real residents' travel behavior data for various reasons, such as a large amount of data and the protection of residents' privacy. This study proposes a method combining a convolutional neural network (CNN) and a long short-term memory network (LSTM) for analyzing and compensating spatiotemporal features in residents' travel data. By exploiting the spatial feature extraction capability of CNNs and the advantages of LSTMs in processing time-series data, the aim is to achieve a traffic simulation close to a real scenario using limited data by modeling travel time and space.
