Patients suffering from acute myeloid leukemia (AML) carry a high risk of serious bleeding complications due to severe thrombocytopenia for long periods of time during treatment. Prior to prophylactic platelet transfusion becoming the standard of care, intracranial bleeding was a major contributor to death in AML patients. However, despite prophylactic platelet transfusions, up to 79% of patients with AML experience clinically significant bleeding during treatment.

Recombinant human parathyroid hormone (1-84), rhPTH(1-84), is an approved adjunctive treatment to oral calcium and active vitamin D for adult patients with hypoparathyroidism; however, there is limited information on the effect of twice daily (BID) dosing of rhPTH(1-84). This was a phase I, open-label, randomized, crossover, multicenter study conducted in adult patients with chronic hypoparathyroidism. The primary objective was to assess the pharmacokinetic profile and pharmacodynamic effects of 1 day of treatment with rhPTH(1-84) administered subcutaneously at 25 μg BID, 50 μg BID, and 100 μg once daily (QD) with or without supplemental oral calcium.

Background: Smoking cessation treatment is an important prognostic factor for survival after a cancer diagnosis, especially for tobacco-related cancers. After being diagnosed with lung cancer, approximately 50% of patients continue smoking or frequently relapse after a quit attempt. Given the importance of smoking cessation treatment for cancer survivors, the objective was to compare the effectiveness of a 6-week intensive smoking cessation intervention, the Gold Standard Program (GSP), among cancer survivors compared with smokers without cancer.

Background The ketone body 3-hydroxybutyrate (3-OHB) increases cardiac output (CO) in patients with heart failure through unknown mechanisms. 3-OHB activates the hydroxycarboxylic acid receptor 2 (HCA), which increases prostaglandins and suppresses circulating free fatty acids. We investigated whether the cardiovascular effects of 3-OHB involved HCA activation and if the potent HCA-stimulator niacin may increase CO.

When screening for α-thalassemia in children, adult cut-offs for mean corpuscular volume (MCV) and mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH) are generally applied to guide genetic evaluation. However, the normal ranges for MCV and MCH are lower in children than in adults, so we hypothesized that using age-matched cut-offs could lead to a more rational diagnostic strategy. The aim of this study was to evaluate if age-matched cut-offs could be applied advantageously.
