The claustrum complex is viewed as fundamental for higher-order cognition; however, the circuit organization and function of its neuroanatomical subregions are not well understood. We demonstrated that some of the key roles of the CLA complex can be attributed to the connectivity and function of a small group of neurons in its ventral subregion, the endopiriform (EN). We identified a subpopulation of EN neurons by their projection to the ventral CA1 (EN.

Background: Immune checkpoint inhibitors have revolutionized cancer therapy, but many patients fail to respond or develop resistance, often due to reduced T cell activity. Costimulation via 4-1BB has emerged as a promising approach to enhance the effector function of antigen-primed T cells. Bispecific T cell-engaging (TCE) antibodies are an effective way to provide tumor-specific T cell receptor-mediated signaling to tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes.

NORDIC denoising on VASO data.

Front Neurosci

Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (FMRI) Core, NIH, National Institute of Mental Health, Bethesda, MD, United States.

The use of submillimeter resolution functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is increasing in popularity due to the prospect of studying human brain activation non-invasively at the scale of cortical layers and columns. This method, known as laminar fMRI, is inherently signal-to-noise ratio (SNR)-limited, especially at lower field strengths, with the dominant noise source being of thermal origin. Furthermore, laminar fMRI is challenged with signal displacements due to draining vein effects in conventional gradient-echo blood oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) imaging contrasts.

Center for Ear-EEG, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Aarhus University, Aarhus, Denmark.

The recent progress in auditory attention decoding (AAD) methods is based on algorithms that find a relation between the audio envelope and the neurophysiological response. The most popular approach is based on the reconstruction of the audio envelope from electroencephalogram (EEG) signals. These methods are primarily based on the exogenous response driven by the physical characteristics of the stimuli.

Vitamin D deficiency during pregnancy is associated with an increased risk of health issues in the offspring. Accordingly, recent Endocrine Society guidelines strongly support supplementation in pregnancy, also underlining that without consensus on optimal maternal vitamin D levels, routine screening is currently irrelevant. Knowledge of organ-specific effects of vitamin D and its association with maternal vitamin D status may aid to optimize vitamin D supplementation.

Department of Psychology, Education and Child Studies, Erasmus University Rotterdam, Rotterdam, the Netherlands.

Science is crucial for evidence-based decision-making. Public trust in scientists can help decision makers act on the basis of the best available evidence, especially during crises. However, in recent years the epistemic authority of science has been challenged, causing concerns about low public trust in scientists.

Science is integral to society because it can inform individual, government, corporate, and civil society decision-making on issues such as public health, new technologies or climate change. Yet, public distrust and populist sentiment challenge the relationship between science and society. To help researchers analyse the science-society nexus across different geographical and cultural contexts, we undertook a cross-sectional population survey resulting in a dataset of 71,922 participants in 68 countries.

This review explores the intricate connections between Drosophila models and the human blood-brain barrier (BBB) with nanoparticle-based approaches for neurological treatment. Drosophila serves as a powerful model organism due to its evolutionary conservation of key biological processes, particularly in the context of the BBB, which is formed by glial cells that share structural and functional similarities with mammalian endothelial cells. Recent advancements in nanoparticle technology have highlighted their potential for effective drug delivery across the BBB, utilizing mechanisms such as passive diffusion, receptor-mediated transcytosis, and carrier-mediated transport.

The presence of circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) in patients with colorectal adenomas remains uncertain. Studies using tumor-agnostic approaches report ctDNA in 10-15% of patients, though with uncertainty as to whether the signal originates from the adenoma. To obtain an accurate estimate of the proportion of patients with ctDNA, a sensitive tumor-informed strategy is preferred, as it ensures the detected signal originates from the adenoma.

Health care transition is a process by which children with chronic medical conditions gradually and purposefully move from pediatric to adult-centered health care systems. While transition guidelines have been published by multiple national and international organizations, transition processes have not been optimized for many populations, including youth with Turner syndrome (TS). Numerous barriers exist, at both the system and individual/family level.

Do goats recognise humans cross-modally?

PeerJ

January 2025

Department of Infectious Diseases and Public Health, Jockey Club College of Veterinary Medicine and Life Sciences, City University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong, Hong Kong SAR, China.

Recognition plays a key role in the social lives of gregarious species, enabling animals to distinguish among social partners and tailor their behaviour accordingly. As domesticated animals regularly interact with humans, as well as members of their own species, we might expect mechanisms used to discriminate between conspecifics to also apply to humans. Given that goats can combine visual and vocal cues to recognise one another, we investigated whether this cross-modal recognition extends to discriminating among familiar humans.

Large-scale screening identifies enzyme combinations that remove grown oral biofilm.

Biofilm

December 2024

Interdisciplinary Nanoscience Center (iNANO), Faculty of Natural Sciences, Aarhus University, Gustav Wieds Vej 14, 8000, Aarhus C, Denmark.

Bacteria in the oral cavity are responsible for the development of dental diseases such as caries and periodontitis, but it is becoming increasingly clear that the oral microbiome also benefits human health. Many oral care products on the market are antimicrobial, killing a large part of the oral microbiome but without removing the disease-causing biofilm. Instead, non-biocidal matrix-degrading enzymes may be used to selectively remove biofilm without harming the overall microbiome.
