Treatment of large-size bone defects is difficult, and acquiring autografts may be challenging due to limited availability. A synthetic patient-specific bone substitute can be developed by using 3D printing technologies in such cases. In the present study, we have developed photocurable composite resins with poly(trimethylene carbonate) (PTMC) containing a high percentage of biodegradable bioactive strontium-substituted nanohydroxyapatite (SrHA, size 30-70 nm).

This study examined whether intraindividual variability in response latencies is also detectable in more realistic open-ended virtual contexts where the participants can freely interact with the surroundings when performing instructed everyday tasks from memory.
Method: Three ex-Gaussian parameters, μ, σ, and τ, were derived from response latencies in 2 tasks obtained from 2 datasets comprising 9- to 13-year-old children (72 with ADHD and 71 typically developing controls).

Background And Objective: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) plays a critical role in prostate cancer diagnosis, but is limited by variability in interpretation and diagnostic accuracy. This systematic review evaluates the current state of deep learning (DL) models in enhancing the automatic detection, localization, and characterization of clinically significant prostate cancer (csPCa) on MRI.
Methods: A systematic search was conducted across Medline/PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and ScienceDirect for studies published between January 2020 and September 2023.

We report a study of a cavity optomechanical system driven by narrowband electromagnetic fields, which are applied either in the form of uncorrelated noise, or as a more structured spectrum. The bandwidth of the driving spectra is smaller than the mechanical resonant frequency, and thus we can describe the resulting physics using concepts familiar from regular cavity optomechanics in the resolved-sideband limit. With a blue-detuned noise driving, the noise-induced interaction leads to anti-damping of the mechanical oscillator, and a self-oscillation threshold at an average noise power that is comparable to that of a coherent driving tone.

Background: Working memory (WM) deficits are among the most prominent cognitive impairments in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). While functional connectivity is a prevailing approach in brain imaging of ADHD, alterations in WM-related functional brain networks and their malleability by cognitive training are not well known. We examined whole-brain functional connectivity differences between adults with and without ADHD during n-back WM tasks and rest at pretest, as well as the effects of WM training on functional and structural brain connectivity in the ADHD group.

Neuronal oscillations are ubiquitous in brain activity at all scales and their synchronization dynamics are essential for information processing in neuronal systems. The underlying synaptic mechanisms, while mainly based on GABA- and glutamatergic neurotransmission, are influenced by neuromodulatory systems that have highly variable densities of neurotransmitter receptors and transporters across the cortical mantle. How they constrain the network structures of interacting oscillations has remained a central unaddressed question.

Epidemics, apart from affecting the health of populations, can have large impacts on their social and economic behavior and subsequently feed back to and influence the spreading of the disease. This calls for systematic investigation which factors affect significantly and either beneficially or adversely the disease spreading and regional socio-economics. Based on our recently developed hybrid agent-based socio-economy and epidemic spreading model we perform extensive exploration of its six-dimensional parameter space of the socio-economic part of the model, namely, the attitudes towards the spread of the pandemic, health and the economic situation for both, the population and government agents who impose regulations.

The study of ideological asymmetries in empathy has consistently yielded inconclusive findings. Yet, until recently these inconsistencies relied exclusively on self-reports, which are known to be prone to biases and inaccuracies when evaluating empathy levels. Very recently, we reported ideological asymmetries in cognitive-affective empathy while relying on neuroimaging for the first time to address this question.

Magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) is a tunable material with remarkably flat energy bands near the Fermi level, leading to fascinating transport properties and correlated states at low temperatures. However, grown pristine samples of this material tend to break up into landscapes of twist-angle domains, strongly influencing the physical properties of each individual sample. This poses a significant problem to the interpretation and comparison between measurements obtained from different samples.

Despite the growing interest in the nonhuman animal emotionality, we currently know little about the human brain processing of nonconspecific emotional expressions. Here, we characterized the millisecond-scale temporal dynamics of human brain responses to conspecific human and nonconspecific canine emotional facial expressions. Our results revealed generally similar cortical responses to human and dog facial expressions in the occipital cortex during the first 500 ms, temporal cortex at 100-500 ms and parietal cortex at 150-350 ms from the stimulus onset.

Background: Catheter ablation is a well-established treatment to prevent atrial fibrillation (AF) and atrial flutter (AFL) recurrences and to relieve symptoms, whereas pacemaker implantation and atrioventricular node (AVN) ablation is used for rate control when medical therapy fails.
Aims: We investigated temporal trends and patient characteristics in catheter ablation procedures for AF, AFL and AVN in Finland between 2012-2018.
Methods: Finnish AntiCoagulation in Atrial Fibrillation (FinACAF) is a registry-based study including all patients with AF or AFL in Finland between 2012-2018.

Recombinantly produced collagens present a sustainable, ethical, and safe substitute for collagens derived from natural sources. However, controlling the folding of the recombinant collagens, crucial for replicating the mechanical properties of natural materials, remains a formidable task. Collagen-like proteins from willow sawfly are relatively small and contain no hydroxyprolines, presenting an attractive alternative to the large and post-translationally modified mammalian collagens.
