Background The advantage of pronator quadratus (PQ) repair following internal fixation via the volar approach in distal radius fracture (DRF) surgery remains unconfirmed in the literature. The aim of this study was to compare grip strength, patient-reported outcomes, and functional results between patients with an intact PQ and those with a ruptured PQ before undergoing surgery with a volar locking plate for dorsally displaced unstable extra-articular DRFs. Methods A total of 120 patients aged 55 years and older were included in a randomized controlled trial comparing a volar locking plate with a dorsal nail plate.

Glucose measurement plays a central role in the diagnosis of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). Because of earlier reports of overestimation of glucose in the widely used tubes containing granulated glycolysis inhibitor, the study assessed the performance of fast-clotting serum tubes as an alternative sample for the measurement of glucose. Glucose concentration in fast-clotting serum was compared to lithium-heparin plasma placed in an ice-water slurry after sample collection and glucose stability at room-temperature was studied.

Article Synopsis
  • - The GODIF trial investigates whether using furosemide to remove excess fluid in ICU patients improves outcomes compared to a placebo, as fluid overload is linked to higher mortality in these patients.
  • - Involving 1000 stable adult ICU patients, the trial employs a randomized, blinded, and pragmatic design to measure the primary outcome of days alive and out of the hospital within 90 days after treatment.
  • - The statistical analysis plan includes rigorous methods for comparing treatment groups and considers various prognostic variables to enhance the reliability of the findings regarding furosemide's effectiveness.

Background: Paediatric pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is characterized by increased pulmonary vascular resistance resulting in increased pulmonary artery (PA) and right ventricular pressure (RV). This is associated with disturbed flow dynamics in the PA and RV that are not well characterized. We aimed to compare flow dynamics in children with PAH compared with healthy controls using blood speckle tracking echocardiography.

Objectives: Faecal immunochemical tests (FIT) for the detection of haemoglobin are widely used in the diagnostic pathway of colorectal cancer (CRC) in patients presenting with lower abdominal symptoms. Several quantitative immunochemical tests are available, however only a few tests are available on high throughput automated analyzers. Here we report the analytical and clinical evaluation of the Sentinel-FOB Gold assay on the Roche Cobas 8000 automated system.

Unlabelled: The use of low-profile dorsal and volar locking plates for distal radial fracture surgery has improved results and lowered the complication rate compared with older plate designs. The purpose of the present randomized controlled trial was to compare patient-reported outcomes as well as radiographic and functional results between patients who underwent stabilization with a volar locking plate or a dorsal locking nail-plate for the treatment of dorsally displaced unstable extra-articular distal radial fractures.

Methods: One hundred and twenty patients ≥55 years of age were randomized to surgery with either a volar locking plate or a dorsal locking nail-plate and were assessed at 2 weeks, 6 weeks, 3 months, 6 months, and 1 year.

Aim: Thrombosis of bridging veins has been suggested to be a marker of bridging vein rupture, and thus AHT, in infants with subdural haematoma.

Methods: This is a non-systematic review based on Pubmed search, secondary reference tracking and authors' own article collections.

Results: Radiological studies asserting that imaging signs of cortical vein thrombosis were indicative of traumatic bridging vein rupture were unreliable as they lacked pathological verification of either thrombosis or rupture, and paid little regard to medical conditions other than trauma.

Background And Purpose: Sedentary behaviour is a risk factor for vascular disease and stroke patients are more sedentary than their age-matched peers. The association with glucose levels, as a potential mediator, is unclear, and we have investigated the association between long-bout sedentary behaviour and long-term glucose levels in stroke survivors.

Methods: This study uses data from the Norwegian Cognitive Impairment After Stroke study, a multicentre cohort study.

Aim: Benign external hydrocephalus (BEH), hygroma and chronic subdural haematoma are extra-axial fluid collections in infants. MRI studies have shown that almost half of all new-borns have perinatal subdural blood, generally referred to as subdural haematoma (SDH) or perinatal SDH. Epidemiologically there are striking similarities between chronic SDH and BEH in infants.

Purpose: This novel arthroscopic subscapular sling procedure stabilizes the shoulder using a semitendinosus graft to create a sling around the subscapular tendon, which provides both static and dynamic stability. The aim of the study was to evaluate the biomechanical stability of the subscapular sling procedure in human cadaveric shoulders. The hypothesis was that the sling offers an equal stabilizing effect and range of motion compared to an arthroscopic Bankart repair.

Women diagnosed with breast cancer are offered treatment and therapy based on tumor characteristics, including tumor diameter. There is scarce knowledge whether tumor diameter is accurately reported, or whether it is unconsciously rounded to the nearest half-centimeter (terminal digit preference). This study aimed to assess the precision (number of digits) of breast cancer tumor diameters and whether they are affected by terminal digit preference.

Introduction: Benign external hydrocephalus (BEH) is characterized by too rapidly increasing head circumference in infants, combined with typical neuroimaging findings. Psychomotor developmental delay is typically seen during the first few years of life; after that, the children's development assumedly normalizes. However, little is known about the long-term effects of BEH.

Background and aims In functional chest pain (FCP) of presumed esophageal origin central nervous system hyperexcitability is generally believed to play an important role in pain pathogenesis. However, this theory has recently been challenged. Using magnetic resonance diffusion tensor imaging, the aim was to characterize any microstructural reorganization of the pain neuromatrix in FCP patients.
