Most material removal in modern manufacturing is currently performed using tools with indexable inserts. Additive manufacturing allows for the creation of new, experimental insert shapes and, more importantly, internal structures, such as channels for coolant. This study deals with developing a process for efficiently manufacturing WC-Co specimens with internal coolant channels with a focus on obtaining a suitable microstructure and surface finish, especially inside the channels.

A key aspect for the further development of matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization (MALDI)-mass spectrometry (MS) is a better understanding of the working principles of MALDI matrices. To address this issue, a chemical compound library of 59 structurally related cinnamic acid derivatives was synthesized. Potential MALDI matrices were evaluated with sulfatides, a class of anionic lipids which are abundant in complex brain lipid mixtures.

A printed fringe pattern is imaged by a CCD camera, whereas a phase object is placed in the ray path for imaging. The ray deflections distort the image of the pattern and are measured by evaluation of the image with the Fourier transform method.

A videokeratoscope based on the imaging of a gridlike pattern is introduced. Unlike conventional videokeratoscopes that rely on Placido disks, the new measurement principle allows an exact reconstruction of the surface and the display of fine details. The experimental instrument was tested on precision glass spheres; the maximum error of the height data was less than 3 microm.

Methods: The spherical aberration of the lenses served as a scale for comparison. Measurements have been taken with a specially designed light section method.
