Background: Within the realm of orthopedic literature, the determination of statistical significance for outcomes relies on probability analysis and the reporting of P-values. The aim of this study was to employ fragility analysis as a means of evaluating the resilience of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that assess meniscus surgeries. It was hypothesized that dichotomous outcomes would be statistically fragile and comparable to other orthopedic specialties.

Improving vascular access knowledge and assessment skill of hemodialysis staff.

J Osteopath Med

January 2025

Associate Professor, A.T. Still University, College of Graduate Health Studies, Kirksville, MO, USA.

Context: Vascular access malfunction and failure contribute to morbidity and hospitalization in hemodialysis populations. Although controversy still exists over the identification and appropriate management of access malfunction, recognition of sentinel signs during physical examination remains an efficient way to screen for access malfunction. Dialysis staff are on the front line of providing quality care to dialysis patients, often being the first ones who could detect early physical signs of access malfunction.

The velar chord and dynamic integration of the gular valve in crocodylians.

Anat Rec (Hoboken)

December 2024

Department of Anatomy, Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine, AT Still University, Kirksville, Missouri, USA.

Article Synopsis
  • Crocodylians have a specialized gular valve that forms a water-tight seal in their mouths, allowing them to dive while keeping their mouths open.
  • This study reveals that the gular valve consists of an integrated dorsal component (the dorsal gular fold) and a mobile ventral part (the tongue and hyolingual apparatus), connected by a newly identified structure called the velar chord.
  • The findings suggest that the tension in the velar chord changes the shape of the dorsal gular fold, affecting various behaviors like swallowing and vocalization beyond just diving.

J Clin Aesthet Dermatol

January 2024

Dr. Harrison is with Forefront Dermatology in Englewood, Colorado, and is a Diplomat Fellow of the SDPA; she was with the Doctor of Medical Science Program, AT Still University in Mesa, Arizona at the time of writing.

Article Synopsis
  • The objective of the study is to assess how dermoscopy affects the accuracy, specificity, and sensitivity of skin cancer detection by dermatology clinicians, while also identifying the best training methods for these clinicians.
  • A systematic search was conducted in several databases, such as PubMed and CINAHL, focusing on publications from 2017 to 2023, ultimately yielding 28 peer-reviewed articles from various countries.
  • The review found that dermoscopy significantly enhances skin cancer diagnosis accuracy but revealed inconsistencies in training methods across different educational systems for dermatologists around the world.

Auditory discrimination in aging bilinguals vs. monolinguals with and without hearing loss.

Front Aging

January 2024

Department of Communication Disorders, Doctor of Audiology Program, California State University-Los Angeles, Los Angeles, CA, United States.

Demands for effective assessments of speech perception specific to the aging brain are increasing, as the impacts of hearing loss on an individual's functional health, socialization, and cognition have become more widely recognized. Understanding the mechanisms behind the optimal function of the aging brain in relation to speech and language is challenging, especially in the bilingual population where the language learning and language interference processes could be mistaken for perceptual difficulty. Age-related presbycusis is unavoidable, and the contributions of this sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) process on impaired speech recognition are not completely understood.

While the acute phase of the COVID-19 pandemic has largely come to pass, the chronic physiologic effects of the coronavirus continue to unfold. Specifically, the number of COVID-19-associated vasculitis cases has steadily increased since the onset of the pandemic. Data have shown that vasculitis may develop less than two weeks after COVID-19 or during a later onset of the disease.

Implicit Association Test Alone Is Not Sufficient to Increase Underrepresented Minority Representation in Physician Assistant Programs.

J Physician Assist Educ

December 2023

Darin Ryujin, MS, MPAS, is an associate professor, Associate Chair for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, Division of Physician Assistant Studies, Department of Family and Preventive Medicine, University of Utah, Salt Lake City, Utah.

Purpose: Physician assistant (PA) program matriculants are consistently less diverse than the US population. This study evaluates whether administration of an Implicit Association Test (IAT) to PA program admission committees is associated with changes in the likelihood of (1) receiving an admission interview, (2) receiving an offer of admission, and (3) matriculation of individuals underrepresented in medicine (URiM).

Methods: Admission committees from 4 PA programs participated in an IAT before the 2019/2020 admissions cycle.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to assess the statistical fragility of research on distal fibular fractures by using the fragility index (FI) and fragility quotient (FQ).
  • Researchers searched through clinical trials from 2000 to 2022 and analyzed 23 relevant studies, focusing on significant and non-significant outcomes to calculate FI and FQ values.
  • Findings suggest that the reliability of randomized controlled trials in this area may be overstated, as relying solely on p-values can be misleading; the study advocates for better reporting standards to enhance clinical interpretation of results.

Introduction: Temporary policy changes during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic facilitated rapid expansion of medication for opioid use disorder via telemedicine (tele-MOUD). Evidence for tele-MOUD best practices and its impact on treatment engagement and retention remains limited. This quality improvement initiative compared tele-MOUD implementation among Pennsylvania medication for opioid use disorder (MOUD) programs, evaluated sociodemographic characteristics of patients using tele-MOUD, and described trends in tele-MOUD use and patient engagement and retention.

Aim: The clinical report describes how chairside intraoral scanning can be performed while a rubber dam is in place prior to fabrication of a computer-assisted design and computer-assisted manufacture (CAD/CAM) ceramic restoration.

Background: Recently, combining a chairside CAD/CAM system with rubber dam isolation in place could be used in order to both speed up the restorative process and avoid any contamination to abutment surface, which are the positive effects to patients and clinicians. Unfortunately, manufacturers do not provide guidance on how to make use of chairside CAD/CAM restorations while rubber dam isolation is in place.
