Background: Incidence of sexual violence among recently arrived asylum-seeking women in France (INCIDAVI) is a French study which found a past year incidence of 26 % for postarrival sexual violence (SV) among asylum-seeking women (ASW). It reported that fewer than 1 out of 10 victims consulted a healthcare professional when SV occurred. These findings raise the question of how ASW who have been victims of SV get involved in care.

The rapid proliferation of the halophilic pathogen Vibrio parahaemolyticus poses a severe health hazard to halobios and significantly impedes intensive mariculture. This study aimed to evaluate the potential application of gliding arc discharge plasma (GADP) to control the infection of Vibrio parahaemolyticus in mariculture. This study investigated the inactivation ability of GADP against Vibrio parahaemolyticus in artificial seawater (ASW), changes in the water quality of GADP-treated ASW, and possible inactivation mechanisms of GADP against Vibrio parahaemolyticus in ASW.

Chemical processes taking place on ice-grain mantles are pivotal to the complex chemistry of interstellar environments. In this study, we conducted a comprehensive analysis of the catalytic effects of an amorphous solid water (ASW) surface on the reaction between ammonia (NH) and formaldehyde (HCO) to form aminomethanol (NHCHOH) using density functional theory. We identified potential catalytic sites based on the binding energy distribution of NH and HCO reactants, on a set-of-clusters surface model composed of 22 water molecules and found a total of 14 reaction paths.

Wound healing is facilitated by biomaterials-based grafts and substantially impacted by orchestrated inflammatory responses that are essential to the normal repair process. Tropoelastin (TE) based materials are known to shorten the period for wound repair but the mechanism of anti-inflammatory performance is not known. To explore this, we compared the performance of the gold standard Integra Dermal Regeneration Template (Integra), polyglycerol sebacate (PGS), and TE blended with PGS, in a murine full-thickness cutaneous wound healing study.

The soil bacterium DP1B was isolated from a marine sediment collected off the coast of Randayan Island, Kalimantan Barat, Indonesia and identified based on 16S rDNA as Nocardiopsis alba. The bacterium was cultivated in seven different media (A1, ISP1, ISP2, ISP4, PDB, PC-1, and SCB) with three different solvents [distilled water, 5 % NaCl solution, artificial seawater (ASW)] combinations, shaken at 200 rpm, 30 °C, for 7 days. The culture broths were extracted with ethyl acetate and each extract was tested for its antimicrobial activity and brine shrimp lethality, and the chemical diversity was assessed using thin-layer chromatography (TLC), gas chromatography (GC), and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry/mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS).

In recent history, the world has witnessed a trend towards liberalization of abortion laws driven by an increasing understanding of the negative personal and public health consequences of criminalizing abortion. By contrast, several countries have recently implemented restrictive reproductive laws, joining the 112 countries where access to abortion care is banned completely or with narrow exceptions. On June 24, 2022, the US Supreme Court ruling in Dobbs v Jackson Women's Health Organization overturned its landmark decisions in Roe v Wade that established abortion until the point of viability of the fetus as a constitutional right.

We use an ultra-high vacuum cryogenic atomic force microscope to investigate the surface morphology of amorphous solid water (ASW) prepared by oblique deposition of water vapor onto Si(111)7 × 7 substrates at temperatures of 15 and 100 K. Height-height correlation function analysis of topographic images suggests that ASW at 15 K has a columnar structure and that the typical diameter of the column is 5-10 nm. At 100 K, the typical diameter is 10-30 nm, although columnar features are less prominent.

Gram-negative bacteria (GNB) are a major cause of neonatal sepsis in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Although the World Health Organization (WHO) reports that over 80% of these sepsis deaths could be prevented through improved treatment, the efficacy of the currently recommended first- and second-line treatment regimens for this condition is increasingly affected by high rates of drug resistance. Here we assess three well known antibiotics, fosfomycin, flomoxef and amikacin, in combination as potential antibiotic treatment regimens by investigating the drug resistance and genetic profiles of commonly isolated GNB causing neonatal sepsis in LMICs.

Fishery utilization of idle saline-alkaline water resources offers various benefits including reducing surrounding soil salinity, improving the ecological environment, increasing arable land area, and providing economic advantages to the fishery industry. However, for decades, the characteristics and regulatory mechanisms of microbial communities that affect fishery utilization have not been clear, which restricts their application. In this study, high-throughput 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing was employed to analyze the bacterial community in these water resources.

The relationship between the mechanical forces associated with bowel movement and colonic mucosal physiology is understudied. This is partly due to the limited availability of physiologically relevant fecal models that can exert these mechanical stimuli in in vitro colon models in a simple-to-implement manner. In this report, we created a mucus-coated fecal surrogate that was magnetically propelled to produce a controllable sweeping mechanical stimulation on primary intestinal epithelial cell monolayers.

Introduction: While the United States has high quality data on firearm-related deaths, less information is available on those who arrive at trauma centers alive, especially those discharged from the emergency department. This study sought to describe characteristics of patients arriving to trauma centers alive following a firearm injury, postulating that significant differences in firearm injury intent might provide insights into injury prevention strategies.
Methods: This was a multicenter prospective cohort study of patients treated for firearm-related injuries at 128 US trauma centers from March 2021 to February 2022.

Water vitrifies if cooled at rates above 3 × 10 K/s. In contrast, when the resulting amorphous ice is flash heated, crystallization occurs even at a more than 10 times higher heating rate, as we have recently shown. This may present an issue for microsecond time-resolved cryo-electron microscopy experiments, in which vitreous ice samples are briefly melted with a laser pulse because transient crystallization could potentially alter the dynamics of the embedded proteins.
