Article Synopsis
  • Fabry disease (FD) is an X-linked disorder caused by a deficiency in the enzyme alpha-galactosidase, leading to accumulation of certain lipids in cells, and the impact of rare genetic variants in patients with milder symptoms needs further examination.
  • A 37-year-old female patient exhibited persistent proteinuria after her first pregnancy, with kidney biopsy findings consistent with Fabry disease, including characteristic inclusions in podocytes and an angiokeratoma, although she showed normal alpha-galactosidase enzyme activity.
  • The patient was found to have a rare GLA gene variant, c.610 T > C, and after treatment with an ACE inhibitor, her proteinuria decreased, showing stable renal

Parosteal osteosarcoma associated with a low-grade component mimicking well-differentiated liposarcoma: a case report.

Skeletal Radiol

January 2021

Department of Pathology, Hôpital Cochin, Assistance Publique-Hôpitaux de Paris, AP-HP.Centre - Université de Paris, 27 rue du Faubourg-Saint-Jacques, 75694, Paris Cedex 14, France.

Parosteal osteosarcomas and well-differentiated liposarcomas are both well-differentiated locally aggressive tumors. They both have simple karyotypes with amplification of the 12q13-15 regions including MDM2 and CDK4 genes. In this report, we describe the case of a parosteal osteosarcoma intertwined with a low-grade component similar to a well-differentiated liposarcoma.

Laboratory reporting on the clinical spectrum of CFTR p.Arg117His: Still room for improvement.

J Cyst Fibros

Biomedical Quality Assurance Research Unit, Department of Public Health and Primary Care, University of Leuven, Leuven, Belgium; Department of Medical Diagnostics, University Hospitals Leuven, Leuven, Belgium. Electronic address:

Background: The clinical spectrum associated with cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) variant p.Arg117His is highly variable, ranging from full-blown cystic fibrosis (CF) in a small number of cases to CFTR-related disorders (CFTR-RDs) or no symptoms at all. Therefore, taking into account phenotype variability is essential for interpretation.

Aging Cartilage in Wild-Type Mice: An Observational Study.

Cartilage

December 2021

INSERM UMRS 1124, Toxicité Environnementale, Cibles Thérapeutiques, Signalisation Cellulaire et Biomarqueurs (T3S), Campus Saint-Germain-des-Prés, Paris, France.

Objective: To describe the spontaneous evolution of age-related changes affecting knee joint articular cartilage, walking speed and a serum biomarker of cartilage remodeling in C57BL/6-JRj wild-type male mice.

Design: Histological changes were assessed by the Osteoarthritis Research Society International (OARSI) score (0=normal, 6=vertical clefts/erosion to the calcified cartilage extending >75% of the articular surface) in newborn, 1-week- and 1-, 3-, 6-, 9- and 12-month-old C57BL/6-JRj wild-type male mice, walking speed by the Locotronic system, and serum C-terminal telopeptide of type II collagen (CTX-II) content by ELISA in 1-, 3-, 6-, and 9-month-old C57BL/6-JRj wild-type male mice.

Results: Mean (SD) OARSI score significantly increased from 0.

Children with Down syndrome (DS) suffer from recurrent respiratory infections, which represent the leading cause of mortality during childhood. This susceptibility to infections is usually considered multifactorial and related to both impaired immune function and non-immunological factors. Infections are also one of the top causes of death in DS at adulthood.

Article Synopsis
  • The study compared the performance of QMAC-dRAST V2.0 rapid antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) with the standard disk diffusion method using 100 positive blood culture samples from Gram-negative bacteria.
  • QMAC-dRAST showed a 92.9% agreement with the disk diffusion results but had discrepancies that included 10 very major errors and 40 major errors.
  • Additionally, repeat tests demonstrated that the initial results with QMAC-dRAST were confirmed only 36% of the time, whereas disk diffusion confirmed results 92% of the time, indicating lower reliability in QMAC-dRAST's repeatability.

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is the most frequent genetic disorder in the Caucasian population benefiting from systematic newborn screening tests. It is also the most frequent indication of prenatal and preimplantation genetic diagnosis for a single gene disorder. During the past thirty years, thanks in part to the evolution of diagnostic techniques, our knowledge on CFTR genetics and pathophysiological mechanisms involved in CF have significantly improved.

Depression, antidepressants and low hemoglobin level in the Paris Prospective Study III: A cross-sectional analysis.

Prev Med

June 2020

Université de Paris, Paris Descartes Faculty of Medicine, Paris, France; Inserm, UMR-S970, Paris Cardiovascular Research Center, Team 4 Integrative Epidemiology of Cardiovascular disease, Paris, France.

Article Synopsis
  • Anemia is linked to both depression and antidepressant use, but the impact of antidepressants on hemoglobin levels is not well understood.
  • A study involving 8,640 participants aged 50-75 in Paris found that both depression and antidepressant intake were independently associated with lower hemoglobin levels.
  • Specifically, the use of SSRIs and SNRIs was also connected to decreased hemoglobin levels, suggesting caution in prescribing these medications to depressed patients who may be at risk for anemia.

Severe Infection in Anti-Glomerular Basement Membrane Disease: A Retrospective Multicenter French Study.

J Clin Med

March 2020

Department of Nephrology, Dialysis, and Transplantation, University of Picardie Jules Verne, Amiens University Hospital, F-80054 Amiens, France.

In patients presenting with anti-glomerular basement membrane (GBM) disease with advanced isolated kidney involvement, the benefit of intensive therapy remains controversial due to adverse events, particularly infection. We aim to describe the burden of severe infections (SI) (requiring hospitalization or intravenous antibiotics) and identify predictive factors of SI in a large cohort of patients with anti-GBM disease. Among the 201 patients (median [IQR] age, 53 [30-71] years) included, 74 had pulmonary involvement and 127 isolated glomerulonephritis.

Impact of Supraphysiological Estradiol Serum Levels on Birth Weight in Singletons Born After Fresh Embryo Transfer.

Département de Gynécologie Obsétrique II et Médecine de la Reproduction, Université de Paris, Faculté de Médecine, AP-HP-Centre Université de Paris, Hôpital Cochin, 123 boulevard de Port-Royal, 75014, Paris, France.

In assisted reproductive technology, high estradiol (E2) levels at trigger may increase the risk of low birth weight (LBW). Our objective was to investigate the impact of supra-physiological E2 levels at trigger, on the rate of LBW in singleton pregnancies following fresh embryo transfers (ET), in a center that typically employs the 'freeze-all' strategy in case of high E2 levels, to prevent ovarian hyper stimulation syndrome risk. A cohort study was conducted in a university hospital between November 2012 and January 2017.

Introduction: Botulism is a rare syndrome resulting from the action of a neurotoxin produced by Clostridium botulinum, that it is potentially life threatening if diagnosis is delayed.

Case Report: We report a 26-year-old woman who presented an acute onset of bilateral cranial neuropathies associated with an anticholinergic syndrome in the absence fever leading to consider and confirm the diagnosis of botulism. At the end of follow-up, 7 weeks later, the outcome was favorable with an almost complete neurologic recovery.
