Background: Meropenem-vaborbactam (MEM-VAB) is a novel carbapenem-beta-lactamase-inhibitor combination that demonstrates activity against carbapenem-resistant (CR) Gram-negative bacteria, and more specifically KPC-producers, since vaborbactam is an effective inhibitor of KPC enzymes in vitro. This study aimed to describe the initial uses and efficacy of MEM-VAB for compassionate treatment during the first 21 months following its early access in France.
Method: A national multicenter retrospective study was conducted, including all patients who received at least one dose of MEM-VAB between 20 July 2020, and 5 April 2022.

Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD; formerly known as NAFLD) is a common liver disease worldwide and carries the risk of progressing to severe liver conditions, such as fibrosis and liver cancer. In the context of MASLD, evaluating fat accumulation in the liver and the subsequent production of oxidative stress is essential to understand the disease propagation. However, clinical studies using human patients to investigate the fat accumulation and the onset of oxidative stress in MASLD face ethical and technical challenges, highlighting the importance of alternative methods.

Dysregulation of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone-system (RAAS) in sepsis is a complex and early phenomenon with a likely significant contribution to organ failure and patient outcomes. A better understanding of the pathophysiology and intricacies of the RAAS in septic shock has led to the use of exogenous angiotensin II as a new therapeutic agent. In this review, we report a multinational and multi-disciplinary expert panel discussion on the role and implications of RAAS modulation in sepsis and the use of exogenous angiotensin II.

Background: Patients with metastatic hepatoblastoma are treated with severely toxic first-line chemotherapies in combination with surgery. Yet, inadequate response of lung metastases to neo-adjuvant chemotherapy still compromises patient outcomes making new treatment strategies, tailored to more efficient lung clearance, mandatory.
Methods: We harnessed a comprehensive patient-derived xenograft platform and a variety of in vitro and in vivo assays to establish the preclinical and biological rationale for a new drug for patients with metastatic hepatoblastoma.

Background: Temporary fetoscopic endoluminal tracheal occlusion (FETO) promotes lung growth and increases survival in selected fetuses with congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH). FETO is performed percutaneously by inserting into the trachea a balloon designed for vascular occlusion. However, reports on the potential postnatal side-effects of the balloon are scarce.

Importance: Surfactant administration may be needed in late preterm through full-term neonates, but the pathophysiology of their respiratory failure can be different from that of early preterm neonates. The lung ultrasonography score (LUS) is accurate to guide surfactant replacement in early preterm neonates, but to our knowledge, it has not yet been studied in the late preterm through full-term neonatal population.
Objective: To assess whether LUS is equally accurate to predict surfactant need in late preterm through full-term neonates as in early preterm neonates.

Objectives: In this study, we aimed to assess the efficacy of different ways of administration and types of beta-lactams for hospitalized community-acquired pneumonia (CAP).
Methods: In this post-hoc analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCT) on patients hospitalized for CAP (pneumonia short treatment trial) comparing 3-day vs. 8-day durations of beta-lactams, which concluded to non-inferiority, we included patients who received either amoxicillin-clavulanate (AMC) or third-generation cephalosporin (3GC) regimens, and exclusively either intravenous or oral treatment for the first 3 days (followed by either 5 days of oral placebo or AMC according to randomization).

Background: While social disparities in depression are well-documented, the symptom experience across social positions remains less studied.
Aims: This study examines the connections between depressive symptoms and self-recognizing a depressive episode, on the one hand, and clinical diagnosis, on the other hand, by three social position indicators.
Methods: We analyzed baseline data from a population-based cohort of adults living in France, grouping participants by three indicators: education, financial difficulties, and occupation, and stratifying by sex.

Background: The experience of depressive manifestations and the presentation of symptoms in clinical settings may differ in men and women. Despite the extensive literature, it remains unclear how depressive manifestations interact at symptom levels in men and women. First, we aimed to describe and compare depressive networks by sex.

Background: The clinical course and outcome of COVID-19 vary widely, from asymptomatic and mild to critical. Elderly patients and patients with comorbidities are at increased risk of respiratory failure and oxygen requirements. Due to the massive surge, the pandemic has created challenges for overwhelmed hospitals.

Background: As the variable clinical outcome of patients with hepatoblastoma (HB) cannot be explained by genetics alone, the identification of drugs with the potential to effectively reverse epigenetic alterations is a promising approach to overcome poor therapy response. The gene ubiquitin like with PHD and ring finger domains 1 (UHRF1) represents an encouraging epigenetic target due to its regulatory function in both DNA methylation and histone modifications and its clinical relevance in HB.
Methods: Patient-derived xenograft in vitro and in vivo models were used to study drug response.

Importance: Sepsis is a leading cause of death among children worldwide. Current pediatric-specific criteria for sepsis were published in 2005 based on expert opinion. In 2016, the Third International Consensus Definitions for Sepsis and Septic Shock (Sepsis-3) defined sepsis as life-threatening organ dysfunction caused by a dysregulated host response to infection, but it excluded children.

Design: Shortly after publication of the most recent Surviving Sepsis Campaign Guidelines, the Surviving Sepsis Research Committee, a multiprofessional group of 16 international experts representing the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine and the Society of Critical Care Medicine, convened virtually and iteratively developed the article and recommendations, which represents an update from the 2018 Surviving Sepsis Campaign Research Priorities.
Methods: Each task force member submitted five research questions on any sepsis-related subject.

Introduction: Statins could reduce the synthesis of steroid hormones, thereby could cause adrenal insufficiency. We investigated this risk in a large nationwide database.
Methods: We conducted a nested case-control study using a cohort of individuals affiliated to the French health insurance system in 2010, ≥18y and without adrenal insufficiency history.

Objectives: In this era of bacterial resistance, avoiding inappropriate use of antibiotic treatments is of major importance. Respiratory tract infections are frequent among older patients, and differentiating viral from bacterial infections is a challenge. The aim of our study was to evaluate the impact of recently available respiratory PCR testing on antimicrobial prescription in geriatric acute care.

Background: During cardiac surgery, maintaining a mean arterial pressure (MAP) within the range of cerebral autoregulation (CA) may prevent postoperative morbidity. The lower limit of cerebral autoregulation (LLA) can be determined using the mean velocity index (Mx). The standard Mx is averaged over a ten second period ( ) while using a two second averaging period ( ) is faster and may record more rapid variations in LLA.

Background: This study aimed to compare the short- and long-term outcomes of robotic (RRC-IA) versus laparoscopic (LRC-IA) right colectomy with intracorporeal anastomosis using a propensity score matching (PSM) analysis based on a large European multicentric cohort of patients with nonmetastatic right colon cancer.
Methods: Elective curative-intent RRC-IA and LRC-IA performed between 2014 and 2020 were selected from the MERCY Study Group database. The two PSM-groups were compared for operative and postoperative outcomes, and survival rates.
