The measurement of Calcitonin (Ctn) in fine-needle aspiration (FNA) washout fluids (FNA-Ctn) has demonstrated excellent sensitivity, significantly higher than FNA cytology, in detecting medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC). However, the absence of a fixed cutoff value for FNA-Ctn poses a limitation. This study aimed to investigate whether the sensitivity of FNA-Ctn in detecting MTC varies with different cutoffs reported in the literature.

Purpose: Thyroid nodules diagnosed by fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) as TIR3A or Class III subgroup "other types of atypia" (indeterminate thyroid nodules - ITNs), are the only ones without a unique clinical action indicated for management. This leads to multiple FNAC repetitions (FNAC-reps) and lifelong follow-up, with huge consumption of time and resources. The aims of the study were to inquire the usefulness of repeating FNAC in ITNs and perform an evaluation of a long-term follow-up of a large cohort of ITNs.

This review examines the increasing use of artificial intelligence (AI) in rheumatology, focusing on its potential impact in key areas. AI, including machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL), is revolutionizing diagnosis, treatment personalization, and prognosis prediction in rheumatologic diseases. Specifically, AI models based on convolutional neural networks (CNNs) demonstrate significant efficacy in analyzing medical images for disease classification and severity assessment.

Current concepts in orthognathic surgery focus on not just rectifying dentoskeletal irregularities but also improving facial aesthetic and function. In this respect, nasal reshaping holds extraordinary significance in determining surgery effectiveness and patient satisfaction. Facial preoperative evaluations emphasize the paramount functional and aesthetic impacts of caudal septum in tip reshaping.

Thyroid nodules (TNs) are a common entity, with the majority being benign. Therefore, employing an accurate rule-out strategy in clinical practice is essential. In the thyroid field, the current era is significantly marked by the worldwide diffusion of ultrasound (US)-based malignancy risk stratification systems of TN, usually reported as Thyroid Imaging Reporting And Data System (TIRADS).

Purpose: Abnormal liver blood tests (ALBTs), neutropenia (NEU) and thymic hyperplasia (TH) are new features of Graves' disease (GD). Our objectives were: (a) to calculate the accuracy of TH in discriminating between Graves' and non-Graves' thyrotoxicosis, compared to ALBTs, NEU and Graves' orbitopathy (GO); (b) to explore the outcome of GD-associated TH and non-GD-associated TH.
Methods: We prospectively analyzed consecutive adult patients with newly diagnosed thyrotoxicosis from January 2018 to June 2023.

The incidence of papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) is increasing and PTC ≤ 10 mm (PTMC) accounts for most new diagnoses. PTMCs are not always low risk, as detection of lymph nodes metastasis (LNM) may occur. The purpose of the study was to analyze the clinical pattern, frequency, and independent risk factors of patients with PTMC and LNM.

Purpose: Our purposes were: 1) to estimate the prediction performance (PP) of cytology in identifying papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) subtypes; 2) to explore how the PTC subtypes distribute among the American College of Radiology (ACR) Thyroid Imaging Reporting and Data System (TI-RADS) categories.
Methods: Nodules were included if both the histology with the PTC subtype report and the cytology report with the possible PTC subtype were available. The PP was calculated by making the proportion of True positives/False positives+false negatives.

In this review, we have summarized the existing knowledge of ulcerative colitis (UC) markers based on current literature, specifically, the roles of potential new biomarkers, such as circulating, fecal, genetic, and epigenetic alterations, in UC onset, disease activity, and in therapy response. UC is a complex multifactorial inflammatory disease. There are many invasive and non-invasive diagnostic methods in UC, including several laboratory markers which are employed in diagnosis and disease assessment; however, colonoscopy remains the most widely used method.

Aims: To evaluate cognitive function in subjects with type 2 diabetes (T2D) treated with glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonist (GLP-1RA) plus metformin or metformin alone and its association with endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs).
Methods: Adults with T2D treated with GLP-1RA plus metformin (GLP-1RA + MET) or MET alone for at least 12 months were included. Montreal Cognitive Assessment test (MoCA), Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA) and disability tests were administered.

Bilateral sagittal split osteotomy for orthognathic surgery is the most used technique for mandible advancement or setback and has been well documented and modified over the years since Trauner and Obwegeser described it. The improvement brought by each technique allowed the surgeons to perform safer osteotomies, shorten the operative time, and increased the flexibility of the programmed mandibular movements. The authors present a modification of the bilateral sagittal osteotomy technique with the aim of making the technique easier to perform and more comfortable for the surgeon for the purpose of positioning the osteosynthesis plates and screws.

Hereditary cancer syndromes predispose to several types of cancer due to inherited pathogenic variants in susceptibility genes. We describe the case of a 57-year-old woman, diagnosed with breast cancer, and her family. The proband belongs to a family with a suspected tumor syndrome, due to other cancer cases in her family from the paternal and maternal sides.

This study investigates longitudinal changes in health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in early-onset multiple sclerosis (MS) patients and explores the impact of disease activity (relapses) on such changes. People with MS (PwMS) onset between 12 and 25 years of age were followed longitudinally. At baseline and at year 4, patients were asked to fill the Paediatric Quality of life inventory (PedsQL).

Epidemiological evidence shows that diabetic patients have an increased cancer risk and a higher mortality rate. Glucose could play a central role in metabolism and growth of many tumor types, and this possible mechanism is supported by the high rate of glucose demand and uptake in cancer. Thus, growing evidence suggests that hyperglycemia contributes to cancer progression but also to its onset.

Epigenetic-sensitive mechanisms, mainly DNA methylation, mirror the relationship between environmental and genetic risk factors able to affect the sensitiveness to development of obesity and its comorbidities. Bariatric and metabolic surgery may reduce obesity-related cardiovascular risk through tissue-specific DNA methylation changes. Among the most robust results, differential promoter methylation of ACACA, CETP, CTGF, S100A8, and S100A9 genes correlated significantly with the levels of mRNA before and after gastric bypass surgery (RYGB) in obese women.
