Background: Consolidative thoracic radiotherapy (TRT) has been commonly used in the management of extensive-stage small cell lung cancer (ES-SCLC). Nevertheless, phase III trials exploring first-line chemoimmunotherapy have excluded this treatment approach. However, there is a strong biological rationale to support the use of radiotherapy (RT) as a boost to sustain anti-tumor immune responses.

Introduction: Despite several therapeutic efforts, lung cancer remains a highly lethal disease. Novel therapeutic approaches encompass immune-checkpoint inhibitors, targeted therapeutics and antibody-drug conjugates, with different results. Several studies have been aimed at identifying biomarkers able to predict benefit from these therapies and create a prediction model of response, despite this there is a lack of information to help clinicians in the choice of therapy for lung cancer patients with advanced disease.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates the mechanisms behind slow-fast atrioventricular nodal re-entrant tachycardia (AVNRT) and seeks to map electrical activity in the right atrium and Koch's Triangle during this condition and in normal sinus rhythm.
  • - Using advanced mapping techniques and specialized catheters, 45 patients with typical AVNRT were examined, revealing significant differences in AV node potential duration and amplitude between sinus rhythm and tachycardia phases.
  • - The findings demonstrate that ultrahigh-density mapping effectively captures electrical activity throughout the entire tachycardia cycle, which may enhance clinical strategies for treating certain arrhythmias.

Background: In the field of minimally invasive surgery (MIS) for the treatment of hallux valgus (HV), different techniques have begun to emerge in the literature concerning the distal osteotomy of the first metatarsal bone, the synthesis or not of the metatarsal head, the possible association with lateral soft tissues release (LSTR) and osteotomy of the base of the first phalanx.

Aim: To evaluate the role of LSTR on percutaneous HV correction, evaluating functional and radiographical results.

Methods: From January 2012 to May 2016 a total of 396 patients with mild to moderate symptomatic HV treated with the MIS technique were included in this retrospective study.

  • The 2021 EAN/PNS guidelines provide detailed clinical criteria to diagnose various variants of chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy (CIDP), despite the lack of research on their treatment impact.
  • In a study involving 369 patients from the Italian CIDP database, 66% were diagnosed with different CIDP variants using these new criteria, revealing a distribution of typical and atypical forms.
  • The findings indicate that patients with multifocal, distal, and sensory CIDP often experience milder symptoms and may respond differently to steroid treatments compared to those with other variants, underscoring the need for specific guidelines in managing CIDP.

The choice of the mechanical/biological heart valve prosthesis is a topic currently debated in the light of the transcatheter prosthetic models and the results obtained/expected with the new biological valve models. Consequently, it seems that increasingly younger patients would be indicated for an implantation of a biological prosthesis. This is also in order to improve the quality of life of patients who want to avoid oral anticoagulant therapy.
