Purpose: The primary objective was to identify the predictors of in-hospital mortality after pelvic ring injuries. Secondary objectives were to analyze the differences between adults and children and to analyze the causes and timing of death.

Methods: A retrospective cohort study from the pelvic registry of Assiut University Trauma Unit (AUTU), a level 1 trauma centre in Upper Egypt, was carried out.

Purpose: Reconstruction of orbital wall fractures is demanding and has improved dramatically with the implementation of new technologies. True-to-original accuracy of reconstruction has been deemed essential for good clinical outcome, and reasons for unfavorable clinical outcome have been researched extensively. However, no detailed analysis on the influence of plate position and surface contour on clinical outcome has yet been published.

Study Design: Systematic literature review with meta-analysis.

Objective: Thoracolumbar (TL) fractures can be treated conservatively or surgically. Especially, the treatment strategy for incomplete and complete TL burst fractures (A3 and A4, AOSpine classification) in neurologically intact patients remains controversial.

Introduction: Treatment of fractures in the elderly population is a clinical challenge due partly to the presence of comorbidities. In a Geriatric Fracture Centre (GFC), patients are co-managed by a geriatrician in an attempt to improve clinical outcomes and reduce morbidity and mortality. Until now the beneficial effect of orthogeriatric co-management has not been definitively proven.

Unlabelled: Treatment with a variable angle locking plate can, in theory, maintain near anatomic reduction of intra-articular distal radius fractures, but it is unknown to what extent reduction is maintained as measured by computed tomography. We assessed changes in radiographic fracture position 1 year post-operatively. We included 73 patients of whom 66 patients (90%) had radiographs available for review at 1 year post-operatively.

Purpose: Risk factors for leukemia and lymphomas in adults are largely unknown. This study was aimed at evaluating the association between lifestyle factors and the risk of hematological malignancies in an adult population.

Methods: Data were drawn from a population-based case-control study carried out in Italy and included 294 cases (199 lymphoid and 95 myeloid) and 279 controls.

Purpose: To assess the risk for technical complications in patients undergoing removal of locking compression plates (LCP) with head locking screws.

Methods: A total of 205 patients who were scheduled for implant removal surgery after a healed fracture of the femur, tibia, humerus, distal radius, or clavicle in nine Austrian clinics were prospectively included in the study, all of whom had previously undergone fracture fixation by plates, with titanium implants used in 98 % of the patients. Intraoperative technical complications and the methods used to solve them were documented by the surgeon.

The availability of quality research on orthopaedic implants is important for orthopaedic clinical practice, though in many cases such research is deficient in the literature. Randomized trials are dwarfed in number by observational studies which, though also valuable, do not provide the same validity of evidence. This is partly due to the unique challenges faced by orthopaedic clinicians when attempting to conduct randomized trials in areas such as randomization, blinding, and follow-up.

A trend toward international multicenter clinical trials in the medical device industry is helping to increase recruitment figures and to improve the generalizability of results, among other factors. However, working globally creates its own unique set of problems, which are rarely discussed in the literature. This article considers these issues from multicenter, multicultural, and multilingual perspectives.

Viscosupplementation for knee osteoarthritis: current evidence and recommendations.

J Long Term Eff Med Implants

April 2014

Division of Orthopaedic Surgery, McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common joint disorder worldwide and is a leading cause of pain and disability. Appropriate management of younger patients with milder disease remains a challenging area of intense research. Viscosupplementation attempts to restore the biomechanical and biochemical functions of normal synovial fluid hyaluronic acid.

There are five major steps that one must navigate successfully to take a study idea and turn it into a publication that may have an impact on clinical practice. These steps include developing the study question(s), developing the study plan, implementing the study plan, reporting the results and submitting the manuscript(s) for publication. This review takes each of these steps and expands on its important components.
