Background: There is no significant evidence verifying the efficacy of liberal versus conservative oxygen therapy on hemodynamics in patients with sepsis. We investigated how liberal and conservative oxygen therapy influenced stroke volume, cardiac output, and vasopressor needs in patients with sepsis undergoing mechanical ventilation.

Methods: This randomized clinical trial included 106 patients with an admission diagnosis of infection, a Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) score of two points or higher and required invasive mechanical ventilation for at least 72 h.

Antibody-mediated immunity is crucial in the vertebrate immune system. Nanobodies, also known as VHH or single-domain antibodies (sdAbs), are emerging as promising alternatives to full-length antibodies due to their compact size, precise target selectivity, and stability. However, the limited availability of nanobodies (Nbs) for numerous antigens (Ags) presents a significant obstacle to their widespread application.

New Directions in Coronary Revascularization for Refractory Angina: Gene Therapy and the Lizard Heart.

Semin Thorac Cardiovasc Surg

December 2024

Department of Surgery, Division of Cardiac Surgery, The Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio. Electronic address:

Refractory angina is a debilitating disease with limited therapeutic options that is primarily caused by microvascular dysfunction and desertification. Towards addressing this unmet need, microvascular revascularization therapy has progressively evolved from the lizard heart inspired transmyocardial revascularization to precisely inducing vascular endothelial growth factor with gene therapy. Gene therapy with adenoviral vehicles or naked modified ribonucleic acid is safe and shows early signs of clinical promise but has not yet been proven effective due to gaps in optimization.

Purpose: To assess whether corneal nerve analysis can identify and differentiate patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) from those with epilepsy.

Methods: Participants with MS (n = 83), participants with epilepsy (n = 50), and healthy controls (HCs) (n = 20) underwent corneal confocal microscopy (CCM) and quantification of automated corneal nerve fiber length (ACNFL), automated corneal nerve fractal dimension (ACNFrD), and ACNFrD/ACNFL ratio of the subbasal nerve plexus.

Results: ACNFL (MS: P < 0.

Article Synopsis
  • This study focuses on creating a new nanocomposite (GO-PAA-Cu-LP) for medical uses through a multi-step synthesis involving graphene oxide and polyacrylic acid.
  • The research includes a variety of characterization techniques to analyze the nanocomposite, demonstrating that it retains about 73% of its reactivity even after 9 weeks of storage at low temperatures.
  • The findings show that the modified GO-PAA-Cu-LP has enhanced selectivity against cancer cells, promoting apoptosis and cell cycle arrest compared to standard composites and lactoperoxidase alone.

Article Synopsis
  • The World Health Assembly set six global nutrition targets (GNTs) in 2012 to improve maternal and child health, but there has been no comprehensive report detailing progress from 2012 to 2021.
  • A study evaluated the prevalence and impact of these nutrition targets across 204 countries using data from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2021 and projected future trends up to 2050.
  • By 2021, only a few countries met some GNTs; most showed increased child overweight and notable decreases in female anaemia, highlighting a connection between societal development status and nutritional challenges.

As obligate intracellular parasites, viruses depend on host proteins and pathways for their multiplication. Among these host factors, specific nuclear proteins are involved in the life cycle of some cytoplasmic replicating RNA viruses, although their role in the viral cycle remains largely unknown. The polerovirus turnip yellows virus (TuYV) encodes a major coat protein (CP) and a 74 kDa protein known as the readthrough (RT) protein.

Primary intraosseous vascular malformation (VMPI, #606893) is an ultra-rare disorder caused by biallelic pathogenic variants in ELMO2. To date, only six families with pathogenic ELMO2 variants causing a VMPI phenotype have been described. VMPI is characterized by vascular malformations that compress the facial bones, often leading to life-threatening complications, such as massive bleeding and intracranial herniation.
