Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are one of the most prescribed drugs to treat pain or fever. However, oral administration of NSAIDs is frequently associated with adverse effects due to their inhibitory effect on the constitutively expressed cyclooxygenase enzyme 1 (COX-1) in, for instance, the gastrointestinal tract. The soil and indoor fungus Stachybotrys chartarum can induce respiratory disorders, collectively referred to as stachybotryotoxicosis, owing to its prolific production of diverse bioactive secondary metabolites (SMs) or mycotoxins. Although many of these toxins responsible for the harmful effects on animals and humans have been identified in the genus Stachybotrys, however a number of SMs remain elusive. Through in silico analyses, we have identified 37 polyketide synthase (PKS) genes, highlighting that the chemical profile potential of Stachybotrys is far from being fully explored.

Sugar alcohols fulfilling specific structural requirements are a substance class with great potential as organic phase change materials (PCMs). Within this work, we demonstrate the indium-mediated acyloxyallylation (IMA) as a useful strategy for the synthesis of higher-carbon sugar alcohols of the -family featuring all hydroxyl groups in a 1,3--relationship with three major synthetic achievements: first, the dihydroxylation of the IMA-derived allylic sugar derivates was systematically studied in terms of diastereoselectivity, revealing a high degree of substrate control toward -addition. Second, we demonstrated the use of a "double Mitsunobu" reaction, inverting the stereochemistry of terminal diols.
