Efficient and timely testing has taken center stage in the management, control, and monitoring of the current COVID-19 pandemic. Simple, rapid, cost-effective diagnostics are needed that can complement current polymerase chain reaction-based methods and lateral flow immunoassays. Here, we report the development of an electrochemical sensing platform based on single-walled carbon nanotube screen-printed electrodes (SWCNT-SPEs) functionalized with a redox-tagged DNA aptamer that specifically binds to the receptor binding domain of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein S1 subunit.

The swelling and collapsing of thermo-responsive poly(-isopropylacrylamide)-based polymer (pNIPAAm) networks are investigated in order to reveal the dependency on their kinetics and maximum possible actuation speed. The pNIPAAm-based network was attached as thin hydrogel film to lithographically prepared gold nanoparticle arrays to exploit their localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) for rapid local heating. The same substrate also served for LSPR-based monitoring of the reversible collapsing and swelling of the pNIPAAm network through its pronounced refractive index changes.

For the identification of antigenic protein biomarkers for rheumatoid arthritis (RA), we conducted IgG profiling on high density protein microarrays. Plasma IgG of 96 human samples (healthy controls, osteoarthritis, seropositive and seronegative RA, = 24 each) and time-series plasma of a pristane-induced arthritis (PIA) rat model ( = 24 total) were probed on AIT's 16k protein microarray. Biochars from wood chips (WC) and corn cobs (CC) were prepared by slow pyrolysis and used for sorption separation of erythrosine B (EB) and thioflavin T (TT) in batch experiments. Biochar-based adsorbents were extensively characterized using FTIR, XRD, SEM-EDX, and XPS techniques. The kinetics studies revealed that adsorption on external surfaces was the rate-limiting step for the removal of TT on both WC and CC biochar, while intraparticle diffusion was the rate-limiting step for the adsorption of EB.

Objective: To evaluate the diagnostic performance of artificial intelligence (AI)-based algorithms for identifying the presence of interictal epileptiform discharges (IEDs) in routine (20-min) electroencephalography (EEG) recordings.

Methods: We evaluated two approaches: a fully automated one and a hybrid approach, where three human raters applied an operational IED definition to assess the automated detections grouped into clusters by the algorithms. A novel multivariable system, combining a transistor with fiber optic-based surface plasmon resonance spectroscopy with the gate electrode simultaneously acting as the fiber optic sensor surface, is reported. The dual-mode sensor allows for discrimination of mass and charge contributions for binding assays on the same sensor surface. The modes of interactions between plants and plant-associated microbiota are manifold, and secondary metabolites often play a central role in plant-microbe interactions. Abiotic and biotic (including both plant pathogens and endophytes) stress can affect the composition and concentration of secondary plant metabolites, and thus have an influence on chemical compounds that make up for the taste and aroma of fruit. Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in spring 2020, the concept of test, trace, and isolate (TTI) was used as a non-pharmaceutical intervention against further spreading of the disease. Single-mode organic solid-state lasers with direct emission into an optical waveguide are attractive candidates for cost-efficient coherent light sources employed in photonic lab-on-a-chip biosensors. Here, we present a combination of a dye-doped organic solid-state distributed feedback laser with a highly sensitive optical waveguide Mach-Zehnder interferometer on a silicon nitride photonic platform. This organic-hybrid laser allows for optical pumping with a laser diode in an alignment tolerant manner, which facilitates applications in point-of-care diagnostics.
