We report the immunologic and virologic response of iron deficiency anemia in two cases of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected individuals. The findings of this report suggest that caution be exercised in prescribing iron supplements to HIV-infected patients. The treatment of iron deficiency anemia should be combined with antiretroviral agents in people living with HIV/AIDS to avoid adverse immunologic and virologic consequences.

Today, providers caring for children who have perinatally acquired HIV disease treat them differently than they did less than a decade ago. As our knowledge of HIV and its treatment have grown, so have we and so have our children. We are seeing the first wave of adolescents with perinatally acquired HIV disease.

Objectives: To review the prevalence and etiology of pain in persons with human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS), and issues and considerations for pain management in this patient population.
Data Sources: Research studies, review articles, and books related to pain in persons with HIV/AIDS.
Conclusions: Pain is a common problem for individuals with HIV/AIDS that is often poorly managed and net well documented.
