Prcis: In 801 participants, corneal hysteresis (CH) was positively associated with female gender and central corneal thickness, and negatively with age and axial length. Diabetes showed no significant association with CH in the adjusted models.
Purpose: To provide values of corneal hysteresis (CH) in an elderly, healthy Greek population and to investigate its association with demographic, ocular, and systemic factors.

Aims: Outcome in pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is determined by right ventricular (RV) function adaptation to increased afterload. Echocardiography is easily available to assist bedside evaluation of the RV. However, no agreement exists about the feasibility and most relevant measurements.

Diuretic drugs act on electrolyte transporters in the kidney to induce diuresis and are often used in chronic kidney disease (CKD), given that nephron loss creates a deficit in the ability to excrete dietary sodium, which promotes an increase in plasma volume. This rise in plasma volume is exacerbated by CKD-induced systemic and intra-renal activation of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone-system, which further limits urinary sodium excretion. In the absence of a compensatory decrease in systemic vascular resistance, increases in plasma volume induced by sodium retention can manifest as a rise in systemic arterial blood pressure.

Thalassemia is an inherited hematological disorder characterized by a decrease in the synthesis of or absence of one or more globin chains. Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is a major cause of acute viral hepatitis, constituting a major global health burden and emerging as a critical public health concern. HEV infection is mainly transmitted via the fecal-oral route; however, parenteral transmission through blood components has been reported in both developing and developed countries.

Objective: To perform a systematic review and meta-analysis to investigate the efficacy of ultrasonography in the diagnosis of pelvic vein insufficiency (PVI).
Results: Seven studies comprised of 802 patients were included. Of these studies, 5 utilised transvaginal ultrasound (TVU), 1 utilised transabdominal ultrasound (TAU) and 1 utilised both ultrasounds as diagnostic tool .

Unlabelled: Critical states present scale-free dynamics, optimizing neuronal complexity and serving as a potential biomarker in cognitively impaired patients. We explored electroencephalogram (EEG) criticality in amnesic Mild Cognitive Impairment patients with clinical improvement in working memory, verbal memory, verbal fluency and overall executive functions after the completion of a 6-month prospective memory training. We compared "before" and "after" stationary resting-state EEG records of right-handed MCI patients (n = 17; 11 females), using the method of critical fluctuations and Haar wavelet analysis.

Imperceptible noisy galvanic vestibular stimulation (nGVS) improves standing balance due to the presence of stochastic resonance (SR). There is, however, a lack of consensus regarding the optimal levels and type of noise used to elicit SR like dynamics. We aimed to confirm the presence of SR behavior in the vestibular system of young healthy adults by examining postural responses to increasing amplitudes of white and pink noise stimulation scaled to individual cutaneous perceptual threshold.

The AGBL5 gene encodes for the Cytoplasmic Carboxypeptidase 5 (CCP5), an α-tubulin deglutamylase that cleaves the γ-carboxyl-linked branching point of glutamylated tubulin. To date, pathogenic variants in AGBL5 have been associated only with isolated retinitis pigmentosa (RP). Hearing loss has not been reported in AGBL5-caused retinal disease.

Periodontitis is a chronic, multifactorial inflammatory condition linked to dysbiotic plaque biofilms and characterized by the gradual destruction of the structures supporting the teeth owing to compromised immune system function. Hemorrhagic stroke, which primarily occurs within the brain tissue or in the subarachnoid space as a blood leak of ruptured vessels, is a sudden neurological impairment caused by vascular damage in the central nervous system, resulting in focal neurological deficits. Chronic periodontitis (CP) and hemorrhagic stroke may share common pathogenic features involving inflammation and immune system activation, prompting researchers to investigate their potential connection.

Randomized clinical trials (RCTs) are pivotal in medical research, offering critical evidence on the efficacy and safety of treatments. This paper explores the distinct purposes and designs of superiority, non-inferiority, equivalence, and pragmatic trials, each addressing unique research questions. Superiority trials aim to demonstrate a new treatment's effectiveness over existing standards, while non-inferiority and equivalence trials focus on ensuring new treatments are not significantly worse or are similar to existing ones, respectively.

BackgroundLate HIV diagnosis (CD4+ T-cell count < 350 cells/μL, or with an AIDS-defining event) remains a persistent challenge in Greece, indicating potential missed opportunities (MOs) for earlier testing.AimTo determine the frequency of HIV indicator conditions (ICs) preceding diagnosis and to quantify MOs for earlier testing at a nationwide level in Greece.MethodsThis multicentre retrospective study analysed data on 823 antiretroviral therapy-naive adults (≥ 18 years) diagnosed with HIV during 2019-21.

: The purpose of this study is to determine the magnitude of change that is clinically meaningful in the EORTC QLQ-C30 and EORTC QLQ-HN35 instruments in head and neck cancer patients. : Two hundred and twenty-two patients completed the EORTC QLQ-C30 and EORTC QLQ-HN35 at baseline and follow-up one to two months later. Minimal clinically important differences (MCIDs) were calculated through anchor- and distribution-based methods for improvement and deterioration.

Delivering valvular intervention for all eligible patients with valvular heart disease (VHD) in a timely manner remains a challenge. Therefore, a high number of patients with heart failure (HF) and VHD receive pharmacotherapy while awaiting intervention or as destination therapy if they are deemed inoperable. The sodium-glucose co-transporter-2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) are recommended with a class I indication for patients with chronic HF throughout the spectrum of left ventricular ejection fraction.

Introduction: Tolosa-Hunt syndrome (THS) is a disorder related to inflammation of cavernous sinus and superior orbital fissure that usually presents with ophthalmoplegia and oculomotor nerve palsies. The etiology of the syndrome is unknown and the diagnosis is set by exclusion of other clinical conditions that manifest in a similar way. Intracranial aneurysms, such as intracavernous ones, should be included in the differential diagnosis as they can compress cranial nerves leading to similar clinical presentation.

Detailed characterization of B cells in dialysis patients who are candidates for kidney transplant is still lacking, with little information on how dialysis duration and modality impact B cell subsets. Cluster analysis of flow cytometry determined the frequencies and absolute numbers of B-cell subsets and divided the cohort of 78 candidates into two distinct clusters, one with shorter and one with longer dialysis duration. The immune profiles of the clusters differed depending on whether frequencies or absolute counts were considered.

Background: Increased time from symptom onset to puncture (TSOP) and time from puncture to reperfusion (TPTR) are associated with worse outcome in ischemic stroke patients treated with endovascular therapy (EVT) in the early time window (<6 h). However, these associations are less described in the late window (>6 h), where patients may benefit from EVT because of a more favorable imaging profile (late window paradox). We sought to compare the effect of these timeframes between these two periods on efficacy and safety outcomes.

Methotrexate (MTX) is an anti-folate chemotherapeutic agent that is considered to be a gold standard in Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) therapy. Nevertheless, toxicities induced mainly due to high doses of MTX are still a challenge for clinical practice. MTX pharmacogenetics implicate various genes as predictors of MTX toxicity, especially those that participate in MTX intake like ().
