Chromium [Cr(VI)]-induced soil pollution is a serious environmental threat. Bioremediation utilizes specific microbes capable of transforming Cr(VI) into the less toxic Cr(III), however, microbial efficacy can be inhibited by elevated pollutant concentrations and competition from indigenous microbial communities. The study investigates the composition and properties of unpopped and expanded popcorn, analyzing monosaccharides, protein, amylose, polyphenols, physical traits, crystallinity, and in vitro digestion. Unpopped grains had high glucose content (mainly from starch), which decreased by 20 % in expanded popcorn, especially in black and red A samples. Expanded grains showed higher protein levels (up to 15 %), particularly in red B and yellow samples.

Breeding animals to produce more robust and disease-resistant pig populations becomes a complementary strategy to the more conventional methods of biosecurity and vaccination. The objective of this study was to explore the ability of a panel of genetic markers and immunity parameters to predict the survival rates during a natural PRRSV outbreak. Despite the existence of a genetic component for resilience, breeding for improved resilience has been limited by the absence of a consensus on its definition and quantifying method. In this work, we provide a review of (i) the definition of resilience and related concepts such as robustness, resistance, and tolerance; (ii) possible quantifying methods for resilience; (iii) its genetic background; and (iv) insights about its improvement through selective breeding.

The photoperiod insensitive allele of Photoperiod-H1 (ppd-H1) increases spike fertility in barley, both indirectly by lengthening flowering time and directly when flowering time is accelerated under extra-long photoperiods. To determine if the effect of PPD-H1 on spike fertility is related to the initiation or the mortality of spikelets/florets, we performed detailed analysis of the dynamics of floret development along the barley spikes. Four near-isogenic lines (NILs) combining ppd-H1 and Ppd-H1 alleles with two PHYTOCHROME C (PhyC-l and PhyC-e) backgrounds were compared under 12- and 24-hour photoperiods.

Spent coffee grounds (SCG), a byproduct rich in polyphenols, can form part of enteric CH4 mitigation strategies while promoting the circular economy. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of 3 levels of SCG inclusion in the concentrate on enteric CH4 production, feed intake, apparent digestibility, ruminal fermentation pattern, microbial protein supply, and gene expression of immune and antioxidant markers in peripheral blood of dry dairy ewes. In a replicated 4 × 4 Latin square design, 8 nonproductive Latxa ewes were assigned to a concentrate that differed in the level of SCG: Control (0 g/kg DM), SCG100 (100 g/kg DM), SCG150 (150 g/kg DM) and SCG200 (200 g/kg DM).

Acute phase protein (APP) response to vaccine challenges is an attractive alternative to natural infection for identifying pigs with increased disease resilience and monitoring the productive performance. Currently, the methods used for APP quantification are diverse and often based on techniques that use antibodies that are not necessarily pig specific. Background: A 4-year experiment evaluated the effects of different integrated weed management (IWM) programs on the evolution of a Echinochloa crus-galli population resistant to acetolactate synthase (ALS) inhibitors in a maize cropping system. The programs included the continued use of ALS inhibitors, mixing them with alternative herbicides, or without ALS-inhibitors, in all cases under maize monocrop or a biennial crop rotation.
Results: IWM programs that relied solely on non-ALS-inhibitors usually achieved high control levels across years (> 90%).

The current work aimed to identify genomic regions and candidate genes associated with resilience in pigs. In previous work, we proposed the body weight deviation from the expected growth curve (ΔBW) and the increase of the positive acute-phase protein haptoglobin (ΔHP) after a vaccine challenge as resilience indicators which may be improved through selective breeding in pigs. Individuals with steady growth rate and minor activation of haptoglobin (high ΔBW and low ΔHP values) were considered resilient.
