Historical studies performed nearly a century ago using mouse skin models identified two key steps in cancer evolution: initiation, a likely mutational event, and promotion, driven by inflammation and cell proliferation. Initiation was proposed to be permanent, with promotion as the critical rate-limiting step for cancer development. Here, we carried out whole genome sequencing to demonstrate that initiated cells with thousands of mutagen-induced mutations can persist for long periods and are not removed by cell competition or by immune intervention, thus mimicking the persistence of cells with cancer driver mutations in normal human tissues.

Improving the fast-charging capability of NbWO-based Li-ion batteries.

The discovery of Nb-W-O materials years ago marks the milestone of charging a lithium-ion battery in minutes. Nevertheless, for many applications, charging lithium-ion battery within one minute is urgently demanded, the bottleneck of which largely lies in the lack of fundamental understanding of Li storage mechanisms in these materials. Herein, by visualizing Li intercalated into representative NbWO, we find that the fast-charging nature of such material originates from an interesting rate-dependent lattice relaxation process associated with the Jahn-Teller effect.

Rationale: With the development of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technology, most of the research tends to find that there is a significant positive correlation between white matter hyperintensities (WMHs) and cognitive dysfunction in cerebral small vessel vascular disease. In this paper, we report 2 cases of cerebral small vessel disease with significant differences in cognitive function and analyze them by multidimensional assessment using imaging technology so as to provide a methodological reference for identifying and diagnosing the causes of differences in cognitive function in cerebral small vessel disease patients.

Patient Concerns: Patient 1 was a 64-year-old middle-aged man who presented 10 years ago with slow reaction time, memory loss, and loss of self-care ability, and MRI suggested multiple ischemic infarct foci with cerebral white matter changes.

Since its inception over three decades ago, phytomining has finally reached the stage of commercial-scale implementation, at least for nickel. Much potential remains to be realised for other elements, notably cobalt, selenium, and thallium, but this requires scientific impetus leveraging recent advances in insights garnered from molecular mechanisms of hyperaccumulation, domestication and agronomic development. These advances will also enable us to (genetically) improve hyperaccumulators for use in phytomining by targeted breeding, as well as synthetic biology approaches.
