Department of Medicine, Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes Center, Escola Paulista de Medicina, Universidade Federal de São Paulo, São Paulo, SP, Caixa Postal 20266 CEP 04022-001, Brazil.

Aims: This study aimed to investigate whether the response to adding metformin to insulin in young adults with type 1 diabetes (T1D) differs according to weight phenotype and insulin sensitivity index.

Methods: A prospective pilot study was conducted over 26 weeks in which insulin plus metformin (2 g/day) was administered to 35 individuals, ranging from normal weight (NW) to overweight (OW) to obese (OB) T1D individuals, to correlate insulin sensitivity indices and other clinical variables.

Results: At the end of the follow-up period, all groups showed an increase in the eGDR (NW: 7.

In this technical report study, we describe technique for performing the osteotomy and screw passage in minimally invasive fourth-generation hallux valgus surgery with transverse and akin extra-articular metaphyseal osteotomy (META) using a 3D-printed patient-specific surgical instrumentation guide. In an effort to minimize the learning curve and address the variability associated with technical corrections and screw placement, we have initiated the creation of personalized patient-specific instrumentation guides using 3D printing. Our hypothesis is that this approach will enhance safety, precision, decrease surgical time, and reduce exposure to radiation.

Article Synopsis
  • The review analyzed the effectiveness and safety of fezolinetant in treating moderate-to-severe vasomotor symptoms (VMS) in postmenopausal women, using data from several major medical databases.
  • Five randomized controlled trials involving 3,302 patients showed that fezolinetant significantly reduced the frequency and severity of VMS, as well as improved quality of life and sleep for participants compared to a placebo.
  • No significant differences in adverse events were found between the fezolinetant and placebo groups, indicating that it is a safe treatment option for managing menopause-related symptoms.

Background: Glycaemic control of Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (T1DM) remains a challenge due to hypoglycaemic episodes and the burden of insulin self-management. Advancements have been made with the development of automated insulin delivery (AID) devices, yet, previous reviews have only assessed the use of AID over days or weeks, and potential benefits with longer time of AID use in this population remain unclear.

Methods:  We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials comparing AID (hybrid and fully closed-loop systems) to usual care (sensor augmented pumps, multiple daily insulin injections, continuous glucose monitoring and predictive low-glucose suspend) for adults and children with T1DM with a minimum duration of 3 months.

Background/aim: This study aimed to evaluate the toxicities and response rate of a modified TPF (docetaxel, cisplatin, and 5-fluorouracil) protocol in patients with locally advanced head and neck cancer (ECOG performance status ≤1).

Patients And Methods: Induction treatment consisted of cisplatin 25 mg/m/day as a 90 min infusion for three consecutive days, leucovorin 20 mg/m/day as a bolus for four consecutive days, 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) 370 mg/m/day as a bolus for four consecutive days, and paclitaxel 60 mg/m as a 1-h infusion on Days 1, 8, and 15, repeated every 3-4 weeks (twelve cycles to 6 patients).

Results: The main toxicities were grade 1 neuropathy, mucositis, and fatigue.

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of oral ultra-low-dose continuous combination of 17β-estradiol (17β-E2) and norethisterone acetate (NETA) in postmenopausal Brazilian women.

Methods: Postmenopausal women (age 45-60 years) with amenorrhea >12 months and intact uterus, with moderate to severe vasomotor symptoms, were included. The vasomotor symptoms and endometrial bleeding were evaluated by a daily diary for 24 weeks, and the women were assessed at baseline and endpoint.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to assess risk factors influencing outcomes after treatment for aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH) in patients aged 18 and older.
  • - Findings revealed that female gender, aneurysm location, and atherosclerotic plaque affected outcomes in the surgical treatment group, while age was the main factor for those treated endovascularly.
  • - The results indicated that patients with atherosclerotic plaques and multiple aneurysms had poorer outcomes in surgery, while older age correlated with worse outcomes in endovascular treatment.

Introduction: Lithotripsy during retrograde intrarenal surgery (RIRS) can be achieved either by fragmentation and extraction or dusting with spontaneous passage. We aimed to perform a systematic review on the safety and stone-free rate after RIRS by comparing the techniques of dusting vs fragmentation/extraction.

Material And Methods: This review was performed according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses statement.

Article Synopsis
  • Fungal infections can be classified into primary and secondary types, with primary cutaneous cryptococcosis being limited to the skin without affecting the rest of the body.
  • This type of infection is commonly seen in patients with weakened immune systems, while it's rare in those who are immunocompetent.
  • A case study describes an immunocompetent patient who developed ulcerative lesions on the arm after skin injury, identified as caused by serotype B fungi, which healed completely after 5 months of fluconazole treatment.

University of São Paulo, Medical School, Clinics Hospital, São Paulo, SP, Brazil; University of São Paulo, Medical School, Laboratory of Pathology of Infectious Diseases, São Paulo, SP, Brazil. Electronic address:

Tuberculosis verrucosa cutis is a rare medical condition that is caused by the inoculation of Mycobacterium tuberculosis into the skin of a previously sensitized individual. This clinical form of tuberculosis corresponds to 1-2% of all cases of tuberculosis and due to the paucibacillary characteristic of the lesions, patients can be misdiagnosed, accounting for the chronification of the skin infection. Herein, we report the case of a 26-year-old male farmer, presenting plaques with verrucosa and hyperkeratosis features in the left thigh and buttocks during 15 years.
