Background-aim: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a major cause of chronic liver disease worldwide. The aims of this study were to assess Neutrophil-Lymphocyte Ratio (NLR) and C-reactive protein (CRP), and their association with liver histology in patients with non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), chronic hepatitis B (HBV), and hepatitis C (HCV).

Material-methods: We studied 38 consecutive patients with biopsy-proven NASH, 19 patients with HCV, 45 patients with HBV, and 35 healthy controls who were similar for age and gender.

Background: We aimed to evaluate the hepatic immunoreactivity of angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) in non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) patients, elucidate its association with the clinicopathological characteristics and also determine its role in fibrosis progression.

Methods: The consecutive biopsy proven NASH patients were subdivided into two groups according to their fibrosis score. Fibrotic stages<3 in mild fibrosis group and fibrotic stages ≥ 3 in advanced fibrosis depending on the presence of bridging fibrosis.

Background And Aim: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is a common cause of chronic liver disease, including non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). Our aim was to investigate whether serum toll-like receptors 2 and 4 (TLR2 and TLR4) levels are correlated with NASH and able to predict liver fibrosis, as well as to compare these markers with other non-invasive fibrosis scores (aspartate aminotransferase [AST] to alanine aminotransferase ratio, AST to platelet ratio index, fibrosis index, fibrosis 4, and fibrosis cirrhosis index).

Methods: Serum samples were obtained from consecutive biopsy proven NASH patients and healthy controls.

Graft-versus-host disease, iron overload, and infections are the major causes of liver dysfunction in allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (AHSCT) recipients. We investigated the relationship between serum iron parameters and the levels of transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β), fibroblast growth factor (FGF), endothelin-1 (ET-1), and nitric oxide (NO) as predictors of chronic liver injury in 54 AHSCT recipients who survived at least a year after transplantation. Serum samples from patients were obtained for the evaluation of ET-1, TGF-β, FGF, NO, and nontransferrin bound iron at the first year follow-up visit using commercially available ELISA kits.

Background: Hepatic damage due to chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) genotype 1b infection varies widely.

Objectives: We aimed to investigate whether estrogen receptor alpha (ERα) plays a role in liver fibrosis in patients infected with HCV genotype 1b.

Patients And Methods: All the consecutive patients who received the same standard treatment protocol for HCV genotype 1b were subdivided into two subgroups according to their fibrosis scores as fibrotic stages < 2 in mild fibrosis group and fibrotic stages ≥ 2 in advanced fibrosis group, depending on the presence of septal fibrosis.

Muscle side effects have not been frequently assessed in childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) patients. Our objective was to determine the early and late muscle side effects during childhood ALL treatment. To this end, we examined the early muscle side effects in 15 newly diagnosed "therapy patients" (group I), and the late side effects in 18 ALL survivors "off therapy patients" (group II).

Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have mapped risk alleles for at least 10 distinct cancers to a small region of 63 000 bp on chromosome 5p15.33. This region harbors the TERT and CLPTM1L genes; the former encodes the catalytic subunit of telomerase reverse transcriptase and the latter may play a role in apoptosis.

Background: The overall prognosis for cancers of unknown primary (CUP) is poor, median overall survival (OS) being 6-12 months. We evaluated our multicentric retrospective experience for CUP administered docetaxel and cisplatin combination therapy.

Materials And Methods: A total of 29 patients that were pathologically confirmed subtypes of CUP were included in the study.

The aim of this retrospective, multicenter study was to evaluate clinicopathological characteristics, prognostic factors and treatment outcomes of teenage and adult patients with high-grade osteosarcoma. A total of 240 osteosarcoma patients who were diagnosed and treated from March 1995 to September 2011 were analyzed. Median age was 20 years (range 13-74 years), and 153 patients (63.

We present two patients with acute myeloblastic leukemia (FAB AML-M7 and AML-M2) complicated by hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) and relevant literature review. To our knowledge, our first case is the first and youngest patient having AML-M7 associated with HLH reported in the literature. Our cases and cases in the literature highlight the high mortality rate of leukemia associated with HLH and the need for further investigation for the most appropriate therapy.

Introduction: Uterine sarcomas are a group of heterogenous and rare malignancies of the female genital tract and there is a lack of consensus on prognostic factors and optimal treatment.

Objective And Methodology: To perform a retrospective evaluation of clinicopathological characteristics, prognostic factors and treatment outcomes of 93 patients with uterine sarcomas who were diagnosed and treated at 4 different centers from November 2000 to October 2010.

Results: Of the 93 patients, 58.

Herein we present a neutropenic 16-year-old female with acute myeloblastic leukemia that developed recurrentgeneralized seizures while receiving antimicrobial therapy (including oseltamivir) due to pneumonia, bacteremiaof Klebsiella pneumoniae, and H1N1 infection. The patient's seizures were controlled using assisted ventilation.Electroencephalography showed that the patient had encephalopathy.

A 5(3/12)-year-old boy with Philadelphia chromosome (+) pre-B acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) without extramedullary involvement did not achieve remission after induction therapy. His family stopped therapy, but he was readmitted eight months later due to pyoderma, pneumonia and active leukemia with leukocytosis. During cytoreductive and antibiotic therapy, he developed progressive abdominal distension, pain, globe vesicale, tachypnea, and respiratory alkalosis.

Aim: To assess sample volume (by its length and diameter) and sample quality (judging by its integrity) in CT-guided vertebral biopsy due to lesion location and needle trajectory method as individual study variables each.

Material And Methods: Of 48 patients, 25 were men and 23 were women; ranging from 33 to 85 years of age, with a median age of 65.5 years.

Aim: To evaluate the efficacy of single-session percutaneous sclerotherapy with needle aspiration or catheter drainage, under ultrasound (US) or computed tomography (CT) guidance, based on cyst size and depth in 22 symptomatic simple renal cysts.

Methods: Sclerotherapy with 95% alcohol for 20 min was performed in 22 symptomatic simple renal cysts in 15 patients. The method (aspiration or drainage) was chosen according to cyst size and depth: catheter drainage was done for larger (>6 cm) and shallow (<7.
