Background: BMI variability has been associated with increased cardiovascular disease risk in individuals with type 2 diabetes, however comparison between clinical studies and real-world observational evidence has been lacking. Furthermore, it is not known whether BMI variability has an effect independent of HbA1c variability.
Methods: We investigated the association between BMI variability and 3P-MACE risk in the Harmony Outcomes trial (n = 9198), and further analysed placebo arms of REWIND (n = 4440) and EMPA-REG OUTCOME (n = 2333) trials, followed by real-world data from the Tayside Bioresource (n = 6980) using Cox regression modelling.

Rodent pups use a variety of ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs) to facilitate maternal care. Importantly, infant USV repertoires are dependent on both the age and early life experiences of the pups. We have shown that an adverse rearing environment modeled with the maternal separation (MS) paradigm alters caregiving behavior but little is known about how pup USVs differentially elicit maternal attention.

Multiple host and microbial factors dictate whether Candida albicans can colonize the mammalian gastrointestinal tract. In this issue of Cell Host & Microbe, Savage et al. demonstrate that restoration of intestinal epithelial hypoxia is sufficient to restore Candida albicans colonization resistance, even when other Candida inhibitory effectors remain depleted.

The evolution of separate sexes from cosexuality requires at least two mutations: a feminizing allele to cause female development and a masculinizing allele to cause male development. Classically, the double mutant is assumed to be sterile, which leads to two-factor sex determination where male and female sex chromosomes differ at two loci. However, several species appear to have one-factor sex determination where sexual development depends on variation at a single locus.

We report the rare case of an obese woman with a 32-mm isolated innominate artery aneurysm. Due to the deep location of the aneurysm within the thoracic inlet, we selected a transmanubrial osteomuscular sparing approach to obtain a clear field of vision. During the aneurysmectomy and reconstruction with a Y-shaped graft, we performed a temporary bypass using a contralateral leg of the graft to the right common carotid artery.

A major impediment to the clinical translation of DNA tiling nanostructures is a technical bottleneck for the programmable assembly of DNA architectures with well-defined local geometry due to the inability to achieve both sufficient structural rigidity and a large framework. In this work, a Y-backbone was inserted into each face to construct a superlarge, sufficiently rigidified tetrahedral DNA nanostructure (called RDT) with extremely high efficiency. In RDT, the spatial size increased by 6.

Polydactyly is typically observed as isolated and sporadic occurrences, although familial cases do exist, albeit with lower frequency, manifesting in various inheritance patterns. In around 30% of polydactyly cases, there exists a familial history, suggesting the probable involvement of a single gene. Given its potential for hereditary transmission, thorough investigation of the patients' parents, first-degree relatives, grandparents, and even great-grandparents for similar disorders becomes imperative.

Background: Liver failure remains a critical clinical challenge with limited treatment options. Cross-circulation, the establishment of vascular connections between individuals, has historically been explored as a potential supportive therapy but with limited success. This study investigated the feasibility of combining cross-circulation with a rapidly deployable veno-venous bypass (VVB) graft for multi-organ support in a rat model of total hepatectomy, representing the most severe form of liver failure.

Background: Functional coronary angiography (FCA) for endotype characterisation (vasospastic angina [VSA], coronary microvascular disease [CMD], or mixed) is recommended among patients with angina with non-obstructive coronary arteries. Whilst clear diagnostic criteria for VSA and CMD exist, there is no standardised FCA protocol. Variations in testing protocol may limit the widespread uptake of testing, generalisability of results, and expansion of collaborative research.

Objectives: Xerostomia, a common complication of type 2 diabetes, leads to an increased risk of caries, dysphagia, and dysgeusia. Although anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) antibodies, such as ranibizumab (RBZ), have been used to treat diabetic retinopathy, their effects on the salivary glands are unknown. This study evaluated the effects of RBZ on salivary glands to reduce inflammation and restore salivary function in a mouse model of type 2 diabetes.

Systemic sclerosis (SSc) and cryopyrin-associated periodic syndrome (CAPS) are distinct clinical entities belonging to the autoimmune and autoinflammatory diseases, respectively. The coexistence of the two entities has rarely been reported and is poorly characterized. Here, we described a case of a 38-year-old Japanese woman diagnosed with anti-centromere antibody-positive SSc and CAPS carrying the pathogenic mutation in the NLRP3 gene, with a detailed autoantibody profile by a high-throughput comprehensive protein array covering approximately 90% of the human transcriptome.

Consumers often cite cognitive improvements as reasons for making dietary changes or using dietary supplements, a motivation that if leveraged could greatly enhance public health. However, rarely is it considered whether standardized cognitive tests that are used in nutrition research are aligned to outcomes of interest to the consumer. This knowledge gap presents a challenge to the scientific substantiation of nutrition-based cognitive health benefits.

The SLC35 (Solute Carrier 35) family members acting as nucleotide sugar transporters are typically localized in the endoplasmic reticulum or Golgi apparatus. It is, therefore, intriguing that some reports document the presence of orphan transporters SLC35F1 and SLC35F6 within the endosomal and lysosomal system. Here, we compared the subcellular distribution of these proteins and found that they are concentrated in separate compartments; i.

Studies in Western populations have shown that Black and Hispanic patients have an earlier age of Multiple Sclerosis (MS) onset and a more severe disease course characterised by faster disability accrual compared to Whites. It is yet unclear whether MS disease characteristics and clinical course differ amongst Asian racial groups. Singapore is uniquely poised to investigate this as its multi-racial population comprises three genetically diverse Asian racial groups-Chinese, Malay and South Asian.
