The cytoprotective properties of the trace element selenium, its nanoparticles, and selenium nanocomplexes with active compounds are shown using a number of models. To date, some molecular mechanisms of the protective effect of spherical selenium nanoparticles under the action of ischemia/reoxygenation on brain cells have been studied. Among other things, the dependence of the effectiveness of the neuroprotective properties of nanoselenium on its diameter, pathways, and efficiency of penetration into astrocytes was established.

As a continuation of our previous work, in this paper, we examine in greater detail the genome organization and some protein properties of the members of a potential group named Reclovirids and belonging to -related viruses. It can be proposed that the single-component Reclovirid genomes encode previously undiscovered transport genes. Indeed, analysis of the coding potential of these novel viral genomes reveals one or more cistrons ranging in size from 40 to 80 to about 600 codons, located in the 3'-terminal region of the genomic RNA, encoding proteins with predicted hydrophobic segments that are structurally diverse among Reclovirids and have no analogues in other plant RNA viruses.

The long-term evolution experiment (PaLTEE) is the only running filamentous fungus study, which is still going on. The aim of our work is to trace the evolutionary dynamics of the accumulation of mutations in the genomes of eight haploid populations of The results of the genome-wide analysis of all of the lineages, performed 8 years after the start of the PaLTEE, are presented. Data analysis detected 312 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and 39 short insertion-deletion mutations (indels) in total.

We develop the theory for the Stark fluorescence (SF) of molecular aggregates by taking into account the mixing of the excited states [including the states with charge-transfer (CT) characters]. We use the sum-over-state approach and modified rotating wave approximation to describe interactions of the static and optical fields with the permanent and transition dipoles of the excited states. The SF spectral profiles are calculated using the standard and modified Redfield theories for the emission lineshapes.

In this study, the effects of cationic antiseptics such as chlorhexidine, picloxidine, miramistin, and octenidine at concentrations up to 150 µM on fluorescence spectra and its lifetimes, as well as on light-induced electron transfer in protein-pigment complexes of photosystem I (PSI) isolated from cyanobacterium Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 have been studied. In doing so, octenidine turned out to be the most "effective" in terms of its influence on the spectral and functional characteristics of PSI complexes.

Disruption of endometrial regeneration, fibrosis formation, and intrauterine adhesions underlie the development of "thin" endometrium and/or Asherman's syndrome (AS) and are a common cause of infertility and a high risk for adverse obstetric outcomes. The methods used (surgical adhesiolysis, anti-adhesive agents, and hormonal therapy) do not allow restoration of the regenerative properties of the endometrium. The experience gained today with cell therapy using multipotent mesenchymal stromal cells (MMSCs) proves their high regenerative and proliferative properties in tissue damage.

Excitation dynamics in photosynthetic light-harvesting complex B850: exact solution Redfield and Förster limits.

We model the excitation dynamics in bacterial B850 antenna using the standard Redfield, modified Redfield, and Förster approaches and comparing them with the exact solution obtained with hierarchical equation of motion (HEOM). We have found that the modified Redfield is capable of reproducing the dynamics associated with downhill relaxation from higher exciton levels, but fails to explain the migration of quasi-equilibrated excitation over the B850 ring (and its spectral signatures like transient anisotropy decay). Neglecting the population-to-coherence transfers leads to a quick decoherence between the exciton states resulting in unrealistically fast delocalization looking like instantaneous transfer around the ring.

Mitochondrial dysfunction in the ischemic brain is one of the hallmarks of stroke. Dietary interventions such as the ketogenic diet and hydroxycitric acid supplementation (a caloric restriction mimetic) may potentially protect neurons from mitochondrial damage induced by focal stroke in mice. We showed that in control mice, the ketogenic diet and the hydroxycitric acid did not impact significantly on the mtDNA integrity and expression of genes involved in the maintenance of mitochondrial quality control in the brain, liver, and kidney.

In order to obtain antimicrobial compounds with improved properties, new conjugates comprising two different biologically active agents within a single chimeric molecule based on chloramphenicol (CHL) and a hydrophobic cation were synthesized and studied. Chloramphenicol amine (CAM), derived from the ribosome-targeting antibiotic CHL, and the plant isoquinoline alkaloid berberine (BER) are connected by alkyl linkers of different lengths in structures of these conjugates. Using competition binding, double reporter system, and toeprinting assays, we showed that synthesized CAM-Cn-BER compounds bound to the bacterial ribosome and inhibited protein synthesis like the parent CHL.
